Course Description
The course is intended to provide students with an introduction of the national hero’s life by looking at his
works. It pursues the interest in understanding the hero’s nationalist thought by providing the students with
selected readings of historical and theoretical relevance.
Course Learning Outcomes
CLO1:Critically study the life and thought of Rizal in the context of nineteenth century
Philippines.
CLO2: Ascertain the role of Jose Rizal and his writings in the development of Filipino nationalist
thought through the examination of several scholarly papers on Rizal.
CLO3: Determine the relevance of Rizal’s thought vis a vis the evolution of Filipino nationalism as
represented by other thinkers like Apolinario Mabini, Emilio Jacinto, Andres Bonifacio, and
contemporary nationalists like Claro Mayo Recto, Jose W. Diokno, and Lorenzo Tañada.
CLO4:Gain inspiration and insight from the experience of Rizal as a son, student, patriot and
nationalist.
CLO5: Participate and serve the community to which one belong
CLO6: Imbibe the spirit of nationalism and patriotism.

Topic 1: Rizal Law (R.A. 1425)


ILO1: Explain the spirit of the Rizal Law.
ILO2: Discuss the struggle of the passage of Senate Bill 438.

Topic 2: Rizal’s life: An Overview


ILO1: Illustrate our hero’s family background and birth.
ILO2: Describe the life of our National Hero.

Topic 3: Philippines in Rizal’s Time and the development of Filipino nationalism


ILO1: Differentiate the Philippines today from past (Rizal’s time).
ILO2: Reflect the evil practices of the Spanish Colonial Government and the friars.
ILO3: Explain why Dr. Jose P. Rizal joined the masonry.
ILO4: Trace the origin and the development of Filipino nationalism and patriotism.

Topic 4: The making of a leader


ILO1: Trace the story of the making of Dr. Jose P. Rizal as the foremost Philippine National Hero.
ILO2: Discuss why the concept that pen is mightier than the sword.

Topic 5: Rizal’s Education and his Educational ideas


ILO1: Reflect the importance of the scholastic achievements of Dr. Jose P. Rizal.
ILO2: Interpret the educational philosophies and ideas of Rizal.

ILO2: Critique the philosophical and sociological interpretations of the Noli and Fili.

ILO2: Reflect the impact of Rizal’s death and implant in their minds the great cost of Rizal’s sacrifice
for the love of country.

Reminders o It is expected that students have the maturity and discipline to do self-
directed learning and that the Instructor facilitates the learning through
consultation and/or elaboration of topics.
o All learning activities will be uploaded in Moodle.
o Submission of output/s is every end of the week preferably Friday and
should be submitted through Moodle.
o The student must have MSTeams account for the conduct of video
conferencing and instant messaging.
o Written summative exams like for midterm and final shall be done online
through Moodle.
