EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR UNEMPLOYED WORKERS

This letter applies if you plan to attend school or training.

Those receiving Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits may qualify for financial aid to pay for training or school. Some
claimants may be able to keep UI benefits while enrolled.

Federal Pell Grants are based on financial need and other factors. A Pell Grant awards up to $5,550 annually. They are
accepted at nearly all universities, community colleges, and trade and technical schools. If you do not qualify for a Pell
Grant, you may be eligible for other school assistance. Education may lead to a secure job and higher wages.

A Federal website http://federalstudentaid.ed.gov/opportunity can provide help.

Pell Grants are not awarded to those who hold a Bachelor’s degree.

If you are interested in school and training opportunities:

· Decide which school or training meets your needs. Visit your local university, community college or trade and
technical school. A Department of Workforce Services (DWS) Employment Center can also help. A list of DWS
Employment Centers can be found at: https://jobs.utah.gov/regions/ec.html
· Those interested in a Pell Grant must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), at
www.fafsa.ed.gov or by calling 1-800-433-3243. You will need to report last year’s income when applying. Your
school can adjust your eligibility to reflect your current circumstance. Colleges and DWS Employment Centers can
help you apply for Pell Grant scholarships and other federal financial aid.
· Take this letter when you apply. It is valid for 90 days. This letter confirms you are receiving UI benefits and a
dislocated worker. This letter does not guarantee a Pell Grant. Your school will use it to assess your eligibility. You
may provide other proof you are receiving UI, such as your Monetary Determination of Benefits. You can also use
http://jobs.utah.gov. Sign in to “my Unemployment” to access your UI letters.
· A school or training program may affect your eligibility to receive UI benefits. Employment Centers can help
determine if training is appropriate. Generally, DWS-approved programs allow you to remain eligible. Approved
training does not add to your benefits.
