Families and COVID-19: Impacts of the Pandemic to the Families with
Working Family Members of Barangay Visayan Village, Tagum City

Background of the Study:

A typical Filipino Family is known for their close ties. Their relationship with each

other is so close that they almost do not want to be apart from each other. That is why it

is common to them having extended families. The lolo, lola and some titas and titos

stays with the family. They also love doing things together. They eat together, pray

together, etc. they also love celebrating especial occasions like birthdays, Christmas,

etc together. Every member of the family is helping for the good of their family. Usually,

the father provides income to the family while the mother stays at home to do the

chores and tend to the kids. And it is also the children's responsibility to help their

parents. The Filipino Education is of 4 levels. The elementary, which has 6 grades; the

junior high school, which has 4 years; the senior high school, which has 2 years, and

college level. The Filipino (1969, December 31)

Last 2019, broke the news of covid-19 in the world. Although the damage of the

spreading disease is not yet so great it is already a concern for health and society.

(Ioannidis, 2020) COVID-19 shows extremely strong risk stratification across age,

socioeconomic factors, clinical. (Scherb, 2020) A lot of business slowly earned low

income that caused unemployment. The extent to which lifestyle, nutrition, genetics, and

adverse social environment had changed quickly. (Brenner, 2020) The economic impact

of the COVID-19 pandemic threatens the health and well-being of families across the

nation and is particularly consequential for the nation’s 77 million children ages 18 and

under. Karpman, M., Gonzalez, D., & Kenney, G., (May, 2020) In a survey to the

Impacts Of Covid-19 On Job Loss they found out that 24 percent of respondents lost a

job or income due to COVID-19. Most of these job or income losses were due to being

furloughed or experiencing reduced work hours. Despard, M., Grinstein-Weiss, M.,

Chun, Y., & Stephen Roll, S., (July, 2020)

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced families to try to maintain work-family

balance with few supports. With schools and daycare facilities closed, parents are solely

responsible for childcare and perhaps even homeschooling. Yet, many parents are also

working their paid jobs from home, while others have heightened financial concerns due

to losing their job, and yet others involved in healthcare may be living away from their

families to reduce exposing them to the virus. Whatever the circumstance, work-family

balance has become increasingly challenging. (Ruppanner et al., 2020) The full

economic impact of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has yet to be understood – and is

possibly far ahead of us. Encompassing measures are undertaken to protect the

economy, including temporary layoffs, temporary halts in the collection of income taxes

and VAT, and government-guaranteed loans to entrepreneurs. (Dullien, 2013)

As the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on all individuals and their families

around the world. We want to know how this Covid-19 crisis impacted their family

needs. As we all know a job loss is one of the worst financial shocks most families will

face, making it extremely difficult to make ends meet and avoid devastating downstream

effects like foreclosures or evictions. Despard, M., Grinstein-Weiss, M., Chun, Y., &

Roll, S., (July, 2020) During the COVID-19 pandemic, unemployment reached historic

heights with more than 40 million unemployment benefit claims filed even exceeding the

unemployment levels during the Great Depression. Despard, M., Grinstein-Weiss, M.,

Chun, Y., & Roll, S., (July, 2020) As in one of the research parents reported coping with

the pandemic’s economic impacts by cutting back spending on food, reducing savings,

and going into debt. Karpman, M., Gonzalez, D., & Kenney, G., (May, 2020)

During this COVID-19 pandemic, are there changes happen or still the same to

the impact of quality time to parent-child interaction. As researchers have considered

parenting style – such as how warm, strict, or communicative a parent is – as an

important determinant of a child’s skills (Doepke & Zilibotti, 2019; Gershoff et al., 2012).

During a period when schools are closed, parents may have more opportunities to

spend time with children and this may produce more positive parent-child interactions.
(Pinderhughes et al., 2000; Straus & Stewart, 1999) However, the disruptions caused

by changes in routines and economic changes or the threat of illness may produce

more negative interactions. Harsh parenting – including shouting at young children may

exacerbate children’s behavioral and emotional problems (Pinderhughes et al., 2000;

Straus & Stewart, 1999). Even absent the pandemic, children in low income homes

experience harsh parenting more often than do children in higher-income homes (Ryan

et al., 2016).

As the Philippine rank 23rd as the highest Covid-19 cases reaching 191,871,446

cases as of Feb. 24, 2021. (covid19trackerph.com) In region cases, Davao Region rank

7th reaching 92,738 as of July 21, 2021. (doh.gov.ph) While in provinces, Davao del

Norte reaches 2,943 cases as of February 24, 2021 where the rank 1 city in the

province was Tagum City it reaches 1,014 cases as of Feb. 24, 2021 and the barangay

comprises it as the highest was barangay Visayan Village who, as of July 21, 2021 got

111 Covid-19 cases. (City Government of Tagum | Facebook) As the barangay of

Visayan Village rank 1 of the highest Covid-19 cases, a lot of worker who works in the

industries and businesses in barangay Visayan Village had really forced to stop from

working as the City Government of Tagum mandated temporary closures of its

establishments to control the rising of Covid-19 cases through disinfection and

decontamination. (Barangay Visayan Village | Facebook) To this situation in the

barangay, we will know how this impacted their families and students in this crisis.

As the barangay had to experience temporary closures of establishments to stop

the spread of virus all throughout the barangay. The City Government of Tagum rolled

out its food assistance distribution starting on July 20, 2021, to workers and business

owners who were affected by the temporary closure of some establishments as

stipulated under Executive Order 2021-039 that put Tagum City under the stricter

Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) status. (City Government of Tagum

| Facebook) With the current situation, it is of important concern to take a look at how

this COVID-19 crisis had impacted the barangay upon knowing their situation having the
highest Covid-19 cases recorded all throughout the city. More specifically, it is the

concern of this study to take a look at the families residing in the barangay whose

quality of living maybe affected in terms of economic status and quality family time in a

time of global health crisis.
