那些容易被误解的翻译
● bank holiday
● 银行节?NO!
● 是公共假期的意思。有一次我看电视剧,里面两位男士边走边谈,一位提到明天是 bank holiday,
中文字幕赫然出现“明天是银行节”。其实在英国,国定假日就叫 bank holiday,也许银行与英
国人关系太密切了,是生活中不可或缺的,所以国定假日银行不开门,就称之为 bank
holiday.
● bookmaker
● 造书的?NO!
● bookmaker 有图书编纂者的意思,但也有可能是指接受赌注的庄家。例句: When you register
with a bookmaker, you get your own account.当你在一个庄家登记的时候,你有自己的账户。
● coming of age
● 时代来临? NO!
● coming of age 有成年,成熟的意思。例句: And when you are coming of age, you begin to
need love.到了法定年龄,你开始恋爱。
● crow's feet
● 乌鸦脚? NO!
● crow 有两个意思:一是乌鸦,二是用于习惯用语,as the crow flies 表示成直线。
● crow's feet 是鱼尾纹,眼角皱纹。例句: Aging eyes bring more than crow's feet and wrinkles.
眼睛老化带来的不止是鱼尾纹和皱纹。

● drawing room
● 画室? NO!
● 是客厅。以前,在英国,每当宴会结束时,女士们便退席到一个屋里休息。男人们于是可以随便抽
雪茄,喝白兰地,彼此戏说几句,而不会得罪女士们。这里“退席”的英语说法就是 withdrawing
from the dining-room。人们因此把供休息用的那间房子叫做 withdrawing-room。
● 这个风俗习惯随着时间的推移,逐渐消失了。宴会时,男宾女客自始自终在一起,喝酒、开玩笑,
都不彼此回避。风俗被忘记了,休息室 withdrawing-room 中的英语单词 withdrawing 也被莫名
其妙地简化为 drawing,因而有了 drawing room。但它的意思没有改变,仍然表示“客厅;休息
室”,只不过使后来那些望文生义的人容易闹笑话而已。
● flat-footed
● 扁平足? NO!
● 有可能是手足无措。扁平足英文叫做 flatfoot。扁平足的人脚弓 instep arch 直接触地,不利于行,
因此 flat-footed 常用来指笨手笨脚,手足失措。如:A recent drought caught the government
flat-footed.
● fourth estate
● 第四笔地产? NO!
● 是指记者或新闻界。estate 有地产、遗产、地位的意思。欧洲传统上认为社会由贵族、教会、平民
三大阶层构成。大家是否还记得高中历史书上的法国大革命的图片。这些就是所谓的 estate of the
realm; 近代新闻记者自成一个势力,则是传统三大阶层以外的第四阶层,称为 fourth estate,有人
把它译为第四权。
● full of beans
● 到处都是豆子? NO!
● 是精力充沛。bean 通常指四季豆,大概是豆子营养丰富的原因,所以 full of beans 意为精力充沛。
不过在美国俚语中另有“错误连篇”的意思。

● gray matter
● 灰色的东西? NO!
● 是指大脑(灰质)。例句:They focused on the cerebral cortex, or gray matter, which
is responsible for higher thinking.他们把焦点放在负责高等思考的大脑皮层(灰质)。
● green bean
● 绿豆? NO!
● Green Bean 是 French bean 也 就是 我们 所 谓的 四季 豆 ,绿 豆是 Mung Bean 。 复 数 是
green beans。
● hard shoulder
● 硬肩膀? NO!
● 硬质路肩,沿机动车道铺设的路沿石,在爱尔兰地区通常把 hard shoulder 也理解成公共汽车站,
安全岛等。有时候连警察停车的地方也被叫做 hard shoulder。地区不同,解释也不尽相同,但翻
译成隔离墩路沿石都没有错。
● headhunt
● 猎取人头? NO!

● headhunt 确实有野蛮人猎取人头的出征的意思,但是现在大多是用来指“挖墙角”行为。例
句:He was headhunted by Barkers last October to build an advertising team.去
年 10 月他被巴克斯公司挖走了,负责组建一个广告团队。
● heavy duty
● 责任重大? NO!
● 是耐用的意思,也有重型,重载的意思。例句:I bought a pair of heavy duty shoes for climbing
mountains.我买了一双结实的登山鞋。

● hobby horse
● 爱马? NO!
● 是别人早就听腻、自己却乐此不彼的话题。hobby 一般译为嗜好,但其实跟中文的嗜
好有些不同。hobby 必须是正面的,花时闲去培养的休闲活动,看电视、逛街都不
算。骑马 horseback riding 可算是一种 hobby,但 hobby horse 与马无关,是别人
早就听腻了的,自己却乐此不彼、老爱谈起的话题。
● industrial action
● 工业行动? NO!
● 是罢工之类的手段。例句:There should be a seven-day cooling-off period
between a strike ballot and industrial action.在举行罢工投票表决和采取劳工行
动之间应当有 7 天的冷静期。
● labour of love
● 为情所困? NO!

● 而是为了兴趣嗜好而无怨无悔做的事,义务劳动。例句:Writing this book has been a


great
pleasure, a true labour of love.写这本书是一大乐事,辛苦绝对是心甘情愿。
● milk run
● 牛奶用光了? NO!
● 是旅行搭的飞机或火车停很多站,非直达或者直飞。有别于直飞或直达,停靠好几站
载客的飞机或火车,就像 milkman 一天要跑好多地方一样,所以叫做 milk run。另
外,英国有所谓的 milk round。是指大公司每年到各大学征才的活动,大概就是招聘
会。
● moonshine
● 月光?不一定!
● 除了月光的意思,也指私酒,或馊主意,妄想。例句:As Morison remarks, the
story is pure moonshine.正如莫里森所说,这个故事纯属妄想。

● mug shot
● 被马克杯击中? NO!
● 而是拍照存档。mug 现在被译为马克杯。18 世纪初英国流行怪异面孔装饰造型的
马克杯,因此mug 遂有“面孔”的意思。歹徒被捕后到警察局 get a mug shot,
指拍照存档。
● on the couch
● 坐在沙发上?不一定!
● 可能是指看心理医师。couch 就 是 sofa,看心理医师的时候,病人躺下来谈话的长椅
也叫 couch, 所以 on the couch 也就有看心理医师的意思。
什么是俚语?

俚语是美国人生活里常用的语言,“非正式”语言。
俚语可以让说话变得更“生动”更“流利”。俚语比喻一般比较“夸张”,所以很适合
用来表达自己的心情和想法。就像中文里的“哇塞”、“不靠谱”等,这类的语言
都是学校里不会教的,因为他们不够正式。
Go bananas
这个俚语的意思是“发疯、疯狂”,相传这俚语是用来形容人们像是猴子看到香
蕉之后那样的疯狂。
e.g., I'll go bananas if I have to do the report again.
如果还要再做一次报告,我会疯掉的。

所谓的“眼睛糖果”就是指某人、某物十分赏心悦目,看了像是眼睛吃到糖果。
e.g., Look at the clerk over there!She's such an eye candy.
看看那个店员!看起来真是赏心悦目呀!

2.Apple of somebody's eye


这说法最早起于圣经,而莎士比亚也使用过这句,它的真正意思指的是“珍爱的
人”,记得 eye 后面不加 “s”哦~
e.g., I brought her up like the apple of my eye.
我视她为掌上明珠并将她抚养⻓大。

3.Bread and butter


面包奶油对⻄方人来说是每天都会接触到的⻝物,所以这个俚语指的就是“收入
来源、谋生之道”~
e.g., Selling flowers in the neighborhood is her bread and butter.
在小区里卖花是她的谋生之道。

4.Cool as a cucumber
这句俚语的意思是“保持镇定”,它的由来据说是取了 cool 其中“清凉”的含意,
而由于小⻩瓜摸起来本身比较清凉,前缀也同为 “c”, 才会用小⻩瓜做为比
喻。
e.g. Despite the accident, Calvin was as cool as a cucumber.
尽管发生了意外,Calvin 依旧保持着镇定。
5.Finger in every pie
意思可以是指他同时参与很多事情,或是爱插手、多管闲事~
e.g. If you need any information just ask Calvin. He has a finger
in every pie and always knows the answer.

呢。

6.Cut the mustard


Cut the mustard 的意思是“合乎标准”,而这俚语的由来众说纷纭, 比较常⻅
的是 cut the mustard 与军中用语 “pass the muster” 有关,它的意思是“通过
检验”。另外要注意,这个俚语比较常出现在否定句里~
e.g. The boss fired him because he couldn't cut the mustard.
因为表现不好,他被老板裁掉了。

7.Spill the beans


把豆子撒了出来?Spill the beans 的意思就是“泄漏秘密”。相传在古希腊有
许多神秘的团体集会,每当有新成员要加入时,大家总会用黑白豆子进行表
决,而有次装豆子的罐子被打翻了,最高机密也跟着泄漏啦。因此才有 “spill
the beans” 的说法,很有趣对吧: e.g., It's a surprise party!!You'd better not
