Thomas Frey is a man who can see into the future.

Here are some of his predictions for the

year 2030.
Water is going to become the most urgent global issue. Control over a water supply will be more
important in the future than control over an oil supply, as it is now. Countries might even go to war
over it. Because water will be such an important issue, scientists will invent new technologies which
will allow us to harvest water from the atmosphere. We will be able to change the moisture in the air
into water for drinking and growing crops.
Food will be completely different. It’s likely that most food will not be very natural. Instead of meat
and vegetables grown on a farm, food is likely to be made from some soya-based protein which
scientists can make in a lab. When people go out to eat in restaurants, 3D printers will be able to
print food from the soya protein so that it looks and tastes like real food. Most people probably won’t
be able to tell the difference.
Driverless cars will be the norm. Cars will be much more fuel efficient, probably using electricity
instead of some fossil fuel. Cars will be smaller and will not have driver controls. Computers in the
cars will control them, and drivers will be able to relax and enjoy the scenery or work in their cars.
We will probably build special roads for the driverless cars. Motoring will look completely different.
International travel might also be completely different. Jumbo jets and ocean liners will probably not
exist anymore. Instead, different places on the globe will be connected by a network of vacuum
tubes. We will be able to get inside the vacuum tube and get carried to the other side of the world at
a speed of 6,000 kilometres per hour. There won’t be any pollution, and people will be able to live in
London, and work in Sydney.
The biggest advance, however, is going to be in the field of medicine. Instead of visiting the doctor
or the hospital when you get sick, you will have a machine at home. The machine will tell you what’s
wrong with you when you’re not feeling well, and will be able to cure you instantly. Everyone will
have these machines, and doctors and hospitals will probably no longer exist.
