Personal Memoir

Hungry for Success: A Memoir of Nicole Ramsey

Knowing I only have one life to live drives me to meet all of my expectations of

life’s fascinating adventures. For as long as I can remember, I have always dreamed of

becoming a successful business woman. Starting with being an early achiever, I have

molded into an ambitious-minded young lady, and so far my future is looking bright. In

spite of having a father who is terminally ill, I continue to be positive. As I reminisce of

the victories and failures that have created me, Nicole Ramsey, I realize there is plenty

more to come.

As a young child, I started off being an early achiever, which shaped me into who

I have become today. Born in this world on September 18, 1992, the feisty yet loving

could not hold two babies at the same time: one in her arms and one in her belly.

Therefore, she encouraged my crawling, walking, and ultimately getting into everything

pregnant with my younger brother. My hardworking father and stay at home mother put

me at second in command at least while my father was at work. Basically, I learned my

place being my mother’s “right-hand man” and a big sister, which became of great value

years later. Childhood memories were typical: swimming in our backyard pool on

summer days, driving on annual family road trips, and eating my favorite Sunday night

dinners. An honor roll student, I always had a knack for schoolwork, which continues

today. At middle and high school level, I played softball helping lead my team to victory

at each game. Even during my adolescent days, I was destined to blossom.

My most valued hobby was doing hair, which inspired my “hustler” mentality.

Many people fail to realize that being able to do hair is not only a talent, but it is also an

art especially in the African American community. The creative styles of braiding,

despite the hardships in my life. My family learned a couple of years ago that my father

was aggressively cancerous and had risks of metastasizing to other parts of the brain. In

the past few years, my life has been pretty unpredictable. It went from my father losing

eighty pounds due to radiation therapy to him being sued for causing a six car accident

after realizing he was not quite ready to drive again. Life has been crazy for my family

lately especially for my mother, yet my “right-hand man” abilities have kicked in. Also,

the ups and downs have kept my head up looking to a favorable future.

Currently, at a youthful age of nineteen, I am attending Old Dominion University

full time earning a bachelor’s degree of science in Accounting. I hope to follow up with

an MBA and begin my dreams of opening my own business. . Beginning with college, I

will learn the ins and outs of the business world starting with one financial side,

accounting, which happens to be my major. One day I will open my own hair business

ambitiously. Even though I am currently going through the hardship of my father having

life takes on me towards a successful future.
