1 Give the comparison of steam power plant, hydro-electric power plant, diesel power plant 10
and nuclear power plant on the basis of operating cost, initial cost, efficiency, maintenance
cost and availability of source of power.
2 A generating station has a maximum demand of 30MW, a load factor of 65%, a 2+2+2
plant capacity factor of 55% and a plant use factor of 77%. Find
(i) the reserve capacity of the plant
(ii) the daily energy produced
(iii) Maximum energy that could be produced daily if the plant
while running as per schedule, were fully loaded.
3 At the end of a power distribution system, a certain feeder supplies three distribution 6
transformers, each one supplying a group of customers whose connected loads are as under:

Transformer
Diversity of
Load Demand factor
Transformer No. groups
12 kW 0·85
1 1·7
14 kW 0·8
Transformer No. 3·7
17 kW 0·9
2 1·7
Transformer No.
3
If the diversity factor among the transformers is 1·5, find the maximum load on the feeder.
4. What is the most economical value of power factor? How do we calculate it? 4+4
A factory has an average demand of 50 kW and an annual load factor of 0·5.
The power factor is 0·75 lagging. The tariff is Rs 100 per kVA of maximum demand per
annum plus 5 paise per kWh. If loss free capacitors costing Rs 600 per kVAR are to be
utilised, find the value of power factor at which maximum saving will result. The interest and
depreciation together amount to10%. Also determine the annual saving effected by
improving the p.f. to this value.
