METHOD FOR TESTING OF SURFACE PLATES

GRID METHOD

The method of testing large surface plates consists is dividing the entire area of
the surface plate into series of imaginary straight lines forming a grid and
determining the straightness of each of these lines. Distance between these lines is
normally taken as one length the width of surface plate. But it is not convention to
use a distance closer than 50 mm Extreme enter lines are

to 20 mm from outer edges.
In figure on previous page, lines contained within A,B,C,D represent

imaginary grid lines drawn on the table and along these lines, the straightness is

measured. The place way the arbitrarily chosen as captaining for instance, the

points A, B and C, so that the points a A, B and C are brought to Zero. Taking A B

as datum line, the errors at various points along A B are measured. Similarly AC

and BC are taken as datum lines along which the errors are measured.

The line joining A and O is produced to D. The error at O and D W.R.T.

datum surface are then determined. Taking D as a reference point, errors along BD

and CD are determined. This process is contained until all the points of intersection

of the grid lines are covered and a couture map of entire surface is obtained with

reference to ABC as the datum surface

METHOD OF TESTING STRAIGHTNESS OF EACH LINE

In this method a very accurate level is used. The level shall be suitably

mounted so as to rest on two legs with the pre-determined separation.

A carriage with two feet in placed at one end of the line and moved along the

time in steps making use of a straight edge, to guide the movement of the carriage.

The line joining A and B may be taken as the initial reference line and variations.

In the angel with reference to this line are would as the carriage is moved along the
straight line is steps. The errors in height (Rise or fall) of each point with reference to
the initial reference line are then calculated (One Second represents 0.5k per 1000 mm)
The datum is then transferred from the initial reference line to a line joining the two
extreme points

The light (Positive or negative) of the extreme point ‘L’ from the pint m on the initial
reference line xx ( in fig ∆.) below is then Proportionately added or subtracted from the
initial size or fall at each step, these bringing point L to Zero This process is repeated
with all other straight lines.

METHOD OF TESTING FLATNESS OF SURFACE PLATE

A precision level is mounted on a suitable bridge as shown is figure ‘A’ below.

The center point of the bearing areas at both the edge of bridge may be relieved is
necessary to provide for proper scatting.

The surface plate is approximately leveled by positing spent level in two mutually
perpendicular as shown is fig. B.

The surface plate is divided into small squares of 100 mm as shown in fig. c. The
bridge is used in such a way (Fig D) that when the leering areas of bridge scan centers of
areas A1 and A2. Than the reading indicates the difference is height between A1 to A2
similarly the level difference between A2 to A3 etc. are tabulated as in fig. E. When
readings of Row A are completed then the bridge is positioned on the centers of areas A1
to B1 and the reading is noted, it gives difference in light of A1 to B1 Now the readings of
row B are taken scanning centers of areas B1, B2 B3 and so on which gives the readings
of Row B are taken Scanning centers of areas B1, B2 B3 and so on which gives the
readings of Row B, Future readings are Completed for all the rows and the readings are
tabulated as shown in fig. E.

1. NAME OF INSTRUMENT/GAUGE : CI Surface Plate 1000 x 1000 mm.

Since A1 is the datum point, reading at A1 is taken as ‘O’ with the help of these

readings the cumulative values that is errors at various points are reduced with

reference to datum A1 by taking the algebraic sum of the individual differences as

indicated in fig F. This table gives the linear heights of the surface from a plane

passing through the first square ‘A’, whose value is zero. However if required,

readings may be taken in my other column such as middle or last column for cross

checking.

The error of flatness is defined as the minimum difference between

two parallel planes, one passing through topmost point of profile and other passing

through bottom most point of the profile. This is same as applicable for

straightness. The same principle is extended for flatness. From the actual readings

it is, therefore, necessary to visualize two parallel planes and reorient them is such

a way that the difference between max. and min. of the computed values gives the

min. distance between them. If necessary the plane of the working surface may be

inclined in a equivalent position and the difference computed.

Method for amputation is easily understood by specimen calculation obtained on

1000 x 630 mm. CI surface plate fig ‘G’ gives the actual readings while figure ‘H’

gives the cumulated as in fig ‘I’ and ‘J’ for directions DA and AB. From the finally

computed values, the difference is the max. and min. indicates the actual error of

flatness. The zero reference line in this example is chosen at Area A1. In such

areas the adding or the subtracting values start with say + 3 + 2 + 1 + 0 – 1 – 2.

This manipulation is carried out till we get the minimum difference between the

highest and lowest value.
