CHE 511: ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND WATER CONDITIONING

TERM PAPER
A Case Study Presentation
Instructions:
You have been asked by the laboratory manager to develop a method for
analyzing a complex mixture of analytes. Based on the pollutant that was
assigned to you, prepare a 5 – 20 pages PowerPoint presentation Case
Study describing your analytical method.

Nature of the presentation will include:

A) An Introduction: Start by saying what your topic is. How the

pollutant arises and the problems it causes. This should include the
source, the problem, the structure, and the physical and chemical
properties.
This section can also include the different types of analysis that can be
used and why you have chosen the method you have chosen; acting as a
very brief introduction to the next section.
B)The Sampling: This should be about how you would select, extract,
isolate/concentrate the analyte, ready for the analysis; remember it must
flow and so your section must link to the next section and follow on from
the previous section.
Use pictures and schematics of sampling systems, extraction techniques,
clean up and concentration methods. Use flow diagrams to bring it all
together.

C) Analysis method: This should include a brief description of the

technique and how it works. It should include experimental parameters
e.g. conditions of analysis – e.g. wavelengths measured, description of
instrument, principles, description of measurement and an example of the
output.
Use pictures and schematics of the analytical method and operating
principle, conditions. Use flow diagrams to bring it all together.

How it works, theory of the method adopted and how it is performed.

D)The Quantification: This section should include how you would

calibrate the instrument and get a number out of how much of the
pollutant is present, keep it simple but include details of the calibration
methods, use of standards, try to link this to the sampling and analysis
stages so it all fits together. Use simple equations but don’t include pages
of mathematics.
Use pictures and schematics steps in quantification, calibration graphs,
simple formula and concepts..

E) Conclusion:
Pick out the most important take home message.

NB:
2
1.If there is more than one method that can be used then the options can
be mentioned briefly but then concentrate on the most appropriate
method that you decide, is the most suitable.

2. Remember you only have 14 days (on/before 2021/03/10) to submit;

time is of essence!

3. The presentations will be marked based on the following:

 Content

 Quality of Flow-diagrams, figures and tables

 Presentation style

 Timing: Earlier submissions (within 7 days ) will attract more

marks

4. In the PowerPoint Presentation:

 Preferably have someone proof read your slides

 Watch grammar, spelling and punctuation

 Keep it brief

 Use Bullets, not paragraphs

 Know your slides

 Take criticism well & make changes

 Use Power-point functions sensibly
