GENERAL INFORMATION
Scope
ICON System Identification. This document describes the integrated CM570 version of the ICON system, which
does not require the installation of a separate ICON ECM. The integrated ICON system differs from the 2-box after-
market ICON system, which is described in a separate document. The ICON system described in this document con-
sists of the ICON feature, on-engine hardware, and OEM-supplied components as follows. Refer to the Typical ICON
System Installation diagram above.
a. ICON Feature. The ICON feature is one of the optional electronic features available on the CM570 elec-
tronic subsystem The CM570 electronic subsystem provides full-authority fueling control for ISM, ISX, and
Signature engines.
b. ICON Engine. Base (non-ICON) ISM, ISX, and Signature engines must be specially modified to support
the ICON system. All engines must include a special shorting plug. Signature and ISX engines require mod-
ification of the Engine Compression Brake hardware and software. All modifications are already included on
an engine ordered with the ICON option.
c. OEM Components. The OEM must install at least the minimum required components onto the destination
vehicle, and has the option to install many additional components. The most popular components are listed
in the OEM-Supplied ICON Systems Components table that follows. The entire component list is in the
front of the OEM Components section.
* Warning: The 4009761 tilt switch contains mercury, a chemical known to some state and federal agencies to
cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. Do not dispose - Recycle in accordance with state regulations.
The OEM is responsible for labeling all mercury devices for the vehicle in a discernible loca-
tion.
ICON System Requirements. Following are the minimum requirements necessary to guaranty proper operation
of an ICON system.
ICON Warranty. Cummins is responsible for warranty only on ICON components provided by Cummins. Responsi-
bility for warranty of OEM installed components lies with the OEM. These would include:
- Neutral Switch
- Parking Brake Switch
- Hood Tilt Switch
- Starter Relay
- Ignition Bus Relay
- ICON Lamp
- OEM Harnessing
- Cab Thermostat
- Ambient Air Temperature Sensor
- Alarm

grammable features and parameters of ICON system software resident within the ECM of the CM570 elec-
tronic subsystem.
f. Cab Thermostat Programming. This section provides definitions and programming instructions for cus-
tomer-programmable features and parameters of ICON system software resident within the Cab Thermostat.
The Cab Thermostat’s programming menus are also described here.
g. OEM Components. This section describes every Cummins- and OEM-supplied component that is modified
or added to achieve the ICON system. Electrical specifications as well as example components are provided.
h. Pin Mapping. This section maps ICON system signals onto ECM and Cab Thermostat pinouts. Whenever a
pinout listed in this section is also listed in the base (non-ICON) OEM Interfaces book, the signals listed in
this section supersede the signals listed for the base pinout.
i. Signal Descriptions. This section provides definition of ICON system signals, and signals related to the
ICON system. Any signal that is listed in the Pin Mapping table, but is not described in this section, is
defined in the base OEM Interfaces book. OEM circuitry connected to Cab Thermostat pinouts must meet
hardware specifications listed here.
Note: This document does not duplicate hardware specifications in the base OEM Interfaces book. All OEM
circuits connected to an ECM pinout must meet hardware specification listed in the Pinout Specifications
section of the base OEM Interfaces book.
j. Wiring Diagram. This section provides point-to-point ICON system wiring, and any wiring options avail-
able only with ICON engines. Refer to the base (non-ICON) OEM Interfaces book for the remainder of
CM570 electronic subsystem wiring and options.

Definitions
Terms:
Conclude: Request for engine running has gone away and minimum run time has been exceeded,
Violation: One of the interlock switches (tilt, neutral or parking brake) has opened, an auto start error has occurred
(FC 359), an interlock switch error has occurred (FC 541), or any ICON driver error has occurred (FC 198, 199, 338,
339, 588 or 589).
States:
Cool Down: The engine has idled long enough to warrent a shutdown. The engine is currently cooling down while at
zero RPM.
Disable: This state is entered when the key switch transitions states. Manual starts are allowed from this state.Lock-
out: This state is entered if an interlock is opened or vehicle speed is detected while the engine is running or starting.
The only way out of this state is to cycle the keyswitch to ON.
Lockout: This state is entered if an interlock is opened or vehicle speed is detected while the engine is running or
starting. The only way out of this state is to transition the keyswitch to ON. As this state is entered, the ICON lamp
goes OFF.
Mandatory Shutdown: The engine is at idle, the vehicle is stationary, and the ICON switch is OFF.
Post Warm Up: All system requests for a running engine have been satisified for at least a trimable amount of time.
The controller is ramping the engine speed down to the low idle governor prior to a shutdown.
Switch Test: The system flashes the lamp and the driver must perform the neutral switch test to complete the activa-
tion of the system before a timer expires.
Wait: ICON has just been armed. The engine is at idle, the vehicle is stationary, the interlocks are made, the cruise
control switch is ON, and the ICON lamp changes to ON.
Warm Up: The engine has started due to a system request and is ramping the RPM to a trimable value.
a. Block Temperature. The ICON system automatically maintains a minimum engine block temperature, so
that 100% engine power is always available. This is helpful in very cold climates to avoid the long warm-up
time typically required prior to engine operation.
b. Battery Charge. The ICON system automatically keeps the vehicle battery charged. This permits the vehi-
cle to be parked while its electrical accessories are operated. This is also helpful when the vehicle is left
unattended for long periods to avoid battery drainage that typically occurs.
c. Cab Temperature. An option allows the ICON system to automatically maintain cab temperature at a
desired value. This is helpful for maintaining a comfortable sleeping environment.
Application. The ICON system is typically used in commercial line-haul trucks owned by fleets or owner-operators.
Often, these trucks are idled continuously in order to maintain block temperature, battery charge, and cab tempera-
ture. The ICON system performs these functions automatically, but runs the engine only the amount required to
achieve these goals. Because the engine is not run continuously, fuel economy is increased and engine life is
extended. The ICON system can result in a considerable savings for many applications.
Operating Modes. The ICON system operates the engine, starting and stopping the engine as required to obtain the
necessary engine run time. When the engine is running, the engine block warms up due to internal combustion. The
battery will be recharged by the existing vehicle charging system. Cab temperature will be maintained by the existing
vehicle heating and air conditioning systems. Multiple purposes can be met depending on the operating mode. The
ICON system has two operating modes:
a. Engine Mode. The ICON system starts and stops the engine as required to maintain a minimum engine
block temperature and battery charge. Electrical power is removed from high current vehicle systems in an
attempt to preserve battery charge via the ignition bus relay. High-current vehicle systems include HVAC
blowers and electronic dashboards. Before the ICON system starts the engine, the autostart is announced.
b. Cab Comfort Mode. The ICON system starts and stops the engine primarily to maintain cab temperature. A
minimum engine block temperature and battery charge are also maintained as in the Engine Mode.. Electri-
cal power is only applied to high current vehicle systems via the ignition bus relay in response to a Cab
Comfort Mode.
Compatible Features. The ICON feature can be enabled concurrently with all the other features of the CM570 elec-
tronic subsystem, except those that are mutually exclusive (see below). The following features have special compati-
bility requirements, or are not part of the CM570 electronic subsystem.
a. Idle Shutdown. This existing feature has been partially incorporated into the ICON system. The Idle Shut-
down feature is always on in order to utilize its engine shutdown timer. This shutdown timer compels the
driver to arm the ICON feature instead of idling the engine.
c. Self-Excited Alternators. The ICON system is compatible with some OEM-supplied self-excited alterna-
tors. A compatible self-excited alternator will require1400 engine RPM or less for their output to achieve 13
volts or greater.
Mutually Exclusive Features. Existence of the ICON system on an engine precludes the selection of some features
and functions otherwise available as an option on a base (non-ICON) engine.
a. Electronic Air Compressor Governor. The ICON system uses a reconfigurable pinout otherwise used to
drive the E-governor valve. When the ICON system is installed, the Electronic Air Compressor Governor
feature is not available.
b. Starter Lockout. The ICON system uses a reconfigurable pinout otherwise used to drive the Starter Lock-
out relay. When the ICON system is installed, the Starter Lockout feature is not available.
c. 6-Level Engine Braking. On Signature and ISX engines, the ICON system uses reconfigurable pinouts oth-
erwise used by the Engine Compression Brake feature. When the ICON system is installed, the Engine
Compression Brake feature is still available at 100% braking power, but with fewer intermediate braking lev-
els.
d. Vehicle Anti-Theft Automatic Mode. When in automatic mode, the Road Relay Vehicle Anti-Theft feature
requires a key-off in order to automatically lock the engine. Since the ICON system requires the keyswitch
to be ON at all times, the engine must be locked manually after the ICON system stops the engine. The auto-
matic mode will still function when the driver stops the engine.
e. Stationary PTO. The ICON system will perform an idle engine shutdown even when the PTO feature is
active. Therefore, stationary PTO applications cannot be used along with the ICON system. Mobile PTO
applications are allowed.
Option Selection. The ICON system may be ordered as an option on ISM, ISX, and Signature engines, this results in
several factory modifications to the base engine. Hardware that is mutually exclusive with the ICON system is
deleted, and an E-Governor Shorting connector is installed. A special ICON engine brake harness is installed on Sig-
nature and ISX engines. The CM570 electronic subsystem features and parameters are reprogrammed to expect the
presence of the minimum OEM-supplied ICON system components.
Note: The ICON system can be installed on 12-volt vehicles only. Future versions of the ICON system may
be installed on 24-volt systems as well.
Hardware. The OEM must supply component hardware for the ICON system, refer to the OEM Components section
for electrical specifications.
a. Minimum ICON Components. If the OEM is installing an ICON engine, the following components, at a
minimum, must be installed on the vehicle: CC/PTO On/Off switch, Engine Start Alarm, Hood Tilt switch,
ICON lamp, ICON Starter relay, Ignition Bus relay, Neutral Position switch, and Parking Brake switch. A
VSS is also required.
b. Optional ICON Components. If the Cab Comfort mode option is desired, the following components, in
addition to the minimum ICON components, must be installed on the vehicle: Cab Thermostat and ICON
Ambient Temperature Sensor. Other optional components are available for special circumstances, refer to
the OEM Components section.
d. Part Numbers. Most OEM components may be any part number as long as they meet the specifications
defined in the OEM Components section. The following components have been designed specifically for the
ICON system and only the designated parts can be used: Cab Thermostat and Engine Start Alarm.
Operator Control. The operator has the ability to select automatic engine operation in order to maintain a minimum
block temperature, battery charge, and possibly cab temperature. The operator may select either Engine Mode or Cab
Comfort mode, if the appropriate hardware is installed. When the ICON system is operating in Cab Comfort mode,
the operator may select the Heat or Cool function unless locked out by owner. When the ICON system is operating in
Cab Comfort mode, the operator may select desired cab temperature Set Point, and the allowable variance from
desired cab temperature (Range).
Owner Control. The owner may choose the amount of time the engine is allowed to idle, unattended with the ICON
system unarmed, before the engine is automatically shut down. The owner may select the RPM of the engine when it
is operating under ICON system control. The owner may select Cab Thermostat display units in either Fahrenheit or
Celsius. The owner may select partial or fully automatic activation of the Heat or Cool functions depending on ambi-
ent air temperature. The owner may partially or completely prevent the operator from selecting the Heat or Cool func-
tion based on ambient air temperature. The owner has the option to treat an E3 fault as a tampering event (refer to
ICON System Fault Codes).
OPERATOR INTERFACES
Cab Thermostat Switches
Application. There are four push-button switches on the Cab Thermostat, these switches are used by the operator to
control the ICON system during Cab Comfort mode. Refer to the Cab Thermostat Front Panel diagram. An overview
of switch operation is contained in the Cab Thermostat Switch Operation - Cab Comfort Mode table. Detailed switch
operation is described under Cab Comfort menus.
Operation. When the CC/PTO On/Off switch is placed to the ON position, the ICON system can be armed if all
other arming conditions are met. If the ICON system is already armed and the CC/PTO On/Off switch is placed to the
OFF position, the engine will shut down, if running, and the ICON system will go to the Lockout state.
ICON Lamp
Application. The ICON lamp provides the operator with ICON system status - armed or disarmed. When the ICON
system is armed, it may start and stop the engine as required to maintain block temperature, battery charge, and possi-
bly cab temperature. The ICON lamp is also used during the ICON system arming procedure, and to indicate active
ICON fault codes.
Operation. When the ICON system is armed, the ICON lamp flashes at a 1-Hz rate. When the ICON system is not
armed, the ICON lamp does not flash at a 1-Hz rate. However, other flash rates are possible.
Operation. Menu navigation is shown on the Cab Comfort Menus diagram. Refer to the Cab Comfort Menu Opera-
tion table for the operation of each Cab Comfort menu.
a. Default Menu. When the Cab Thermostat is first turned on, it will automatically display the INSIDE TEMP
menu. If no switch press is detected for 20 seconds, the display will default to the INSIDE TEMP menu.
b. Scrolling. By repeatedly pressing the ON/MODE switch, the operator may scroll through the Cab Comfort
menus in a clockwise direction as shown in the diagram.

SUPPORT
ICON System Fault Codes
CM570 Fault Codes. The ECM is capable of detecting ten ICON system faults, refer to the following table for their
designations. The ICON system also processes the existing 241 fault. Active faults are indicated on both the ICON
lamp and the CM570 electronic subsystem diagnostics lamps.
a. Diagnostics Lamps. Any active faults are logged, and will light one of the existing CM570 electronic sub-
system diagnostics lamps: Stop, Warning, or Maintenance. The lamp will extinguish when the fault becomes
inactive. The ICON faults, active or inactive, can be retrieved using a service tool such as Insite.
b. ICON Lamp. The highest priority active ICON-related fault code number will be indicated on the ICON
lamp each time the ECM is keyed on. The indication consists of three groups of 1-Hz flashes separated by 2-
second off times. The three groups correspond to the hundredth, tenth, and single digit of the decimal fault
code number. The fault code number will be repeated twice, separated by a 5-second delay. The flashing will
cease after the fault becomes inactive.
Table 4: Fault Codes Flashed Out on the ICON Lamp in the order listed.

Thermostat Fault Codes. The Cab Thermostat is capable of detecting three ICON system faults designated E1, E2,
and E3. The highest priority active fault code will be displayed on the Cab Thermostat panel. An active fault is reset
when the Cab Thermostat is keyed off.
a. E1 - Internal Sensor Fault. An E1 fault indicates an error in the Cab Thermostat’s internal temperature sen-
sor. An E1 fault will become active when the temperature sensor goes out-of-range high or low. If an E1 fault
is active, engine operation will cycle, 20 minutes on and 15 minutes off.
c. E3 - Possible Tampering Fault. An E3 fault indicates the cab is not heating or cooling in accordance with
the acceptable temperature profile, this may be the result of an open window, incorrect HVAC settings, a
faulty HVAC system, driver tampering, etc. An E3 fault will become active upon the occurrence of excessive
engine operation if ambient air temperature is not extreme (refer to the Thermostat Extreme Hot or Cold
parameter for a better definition of this condition). If an E3 fault is active from either an extended ON event
or reduced engine ON event, the Cab Comfort mode is reverts to a 20 minute OFF cycle and a 15 minute
ON cycle until temperature reaches set point unless the Thermostat Response To E3 Fault feature is disabled.
1.Extended Engine-On Event. An extended engine-on event occurs when the Cab Thermostat
continuously requests engine operation for more than 60 minutes. If an extended engine-on event
occurs and ambient air temperature is not extreme, an E3 fault will become active. If an extended
engine-on event occurs and ambient air temperature is extreme, Cab Thermostat will continuously
request engine operation until the ambient temperature becomes 5 degrees less than the extreme
Hot or 5 degrees more than the extreme Cold.
2.Reduced Engine-Off Event. A reduced engine-off event occurs when the number of requested
starts equals 4 in one hour. If a reduced engine-off event occurs and ambient air temperature is not
extreme, an E3 fault will become active. If a reduced engine-off event occurs and ambient air tem-
perature is extreme, the Cab Thermostat will continuously request engine operation until the ambi-
ent temperature becomes 5 degrees less than the extreme Hot or 5 degrees more than the extreme
Cold.
a. Ignition Bus Relay Test. This test permits the technician to energize the Ignition Bus relay. The technician
must activate a component switched by the relay, for example the HVAC blower, and verify operating power
is removed when the relay is commanded on. This test verifies the operation of the relay coil and wiring, as
well as the ECM’s relay source driver.
b. Starter Relay and Interlocks Test. This test briefly energizes the ICON Starter relay. The technician must
listen for the starter to engage when the relay is commanded on. This test verifies the continuity of the inter-
lock switches and wiring, the relay coil and contacts, as well as the ECM’s relay source and sink drivers.
c. Alarm Test. This test sounds the Engine Start Alarm. This test verifies the operation of the alarm and wir-
ing, as well as the ECM’s alarm source driver.
Monitor Tests. The Insite tool is capable of two tests which monitor an ECM input and report the ICON system state.
a. Interlock Switch Test. This test monitors the ECM’s interlock switch input and displays its state. This test is
helpful for troubleshooting the interlock switches and wiring. This circuit includes the Hood Tilt switch,
Parking Brake switch, Neutral Position switch, and possibly the Optional Interlock switch.
b. ICON System Enable Test. This test monitors the CC/PTO On/Off switch input as detected by the ICON
feature algorithm. This test verifies the integrity of the switch, wiring, and some ECM circuitry.

DISABLED
Application. The ICON system always exists in one of five operating states, unless it is disabled. Refer to the ICON
System Operating States diagram. The five states are as follows:
a. Mandatory Shutdown State. The ICON system is in the Mandatory Shutdown state whenever the engine is
running but the ICON system is not armed. When the ICON system is in this state, the driver is prevented
from idling the engine, unattended, for an owner-selected time period. The driver may reset the shutdown
timer at anytime before shutdown by interacting with either the throttle, brake or clutch.. This compels the
driver to arm the ICON system to maintain battery charge, block temperature, and possibly cab temperature,
instead of idling the engine.
b. Wait Period. The ICON system is in the Wait Period immediately after the ICON system is armed. The Wait
Period provides a verification delay during which the driver may easily change his mind and disarm the
ICON system. The vehicle and engine must meet minimum conditions throughout the Wait Period before the
state can be concluded, and normal operation may proceed. Cab Comfort mode is typically selected during
the Wait Period, initiating Cab Thermostat engine operation requests.
c. Cool-Down State. The ICON system is in the Cool-Down state when the ICON system is armed but engine
operation is not required. When the ICON system is in this state, the engine is stopped, and battery charge,
engine block temperature, and possibly cab temperature are monitored. If any of these parameters needs to
be serviced, the engine will start automatically.
d. Warm-Up State. The ICON system is in the Warm-Up state when the ICON system has started the engine
in order to charge the battery, warm the engine block, and possibly maintain cab temperature. The ICON
system will remain in this state until battery charge, engine block temperature, and possibly cab temperature
are within acceptable limits. Then, the engine will shut down automatically.
e. Lockout State. The ICON system enters the Lockout state when an interlock violation has occurred while
the system was armed. The ICON system will remain in this state until the CM570 electronic subsystem has
been keyed off. This ensures that the driver is aware that an interlock violation has occurred, and will be
more likely to report the problem.
Operation. As shown in the ICON System Operation diagram, normal ICON system operation will result in the fol-
lowing state progression: Mandatory Shutdown, Wait Period, Cool-Down, and Warm-Up. Then, the ICON system
will continue to transition between Cool-Down and Warm-Up until the CM570 electronic subsystem is keyed off.
Other possible exit modes are Abort and Lockout. For a more detailed operational description, refer to the state
descriptions that follow.
a. Disable. The driver may manually disable the ICON system by turning the keyswitch to OFF. The ICON
system will be automatically disabled when the switch test exceeds 60 seconds.
Shutdown Timer Operation. When the ICON system is operating in the Mandatory Shutdown state, the engine may
shut down due to excessive unattended idling. The operation of this engine shutdown function is dictated by the rules
surrounding the operation of the shutdown timer.
a. Timer Run. The timer runs only when the following conditions are both met at once: the engine is operating
at a constant engine speed, and the vehicle is stopped. The timer will run even if the PTO feature is active, so
stationary PTO applications are not compatible with the ICON system.
b. Timer Reset. The timer resets in response to a change in the throttle, clutch, or service brake, the cruise ON
switch transitions from OFF to ON or the vehicle is moved (VSS input detected).
c. Warning Period. 30 seconds before the timer expires, the ICON lamp starts flashing, at the rate of five
flashes per second, to notify the operator of the impending shutdown. The lamp extinguishes when the
engine shuts down or the shutdown timer restarts. An automatic shutdown override is not available.
d. Engine Shutdown. When the shutdown timer has run, uninterrupted, for the period of time defined by the
Idle Shutdown Timer parameter, the engine is shut down. The Ignition Bus Relay does not activate concur-
rently with idle engine shutdown, so that vehicle high-current electrical systems remain powered.
Arming Procedure. When the ICON system is operating in the Mandatory Shutdown state, the system will achieve
the Wait Period only when the system becomes armed without occurrence of any disable conditions.
a. Arming Conditions. In order for the ICON system to arm, the switch test must be satisfied, the engine must
be running at idle speed, the vehicle must be stopped (no VSS input), the accelerator pedal must not be
pressed, the parking brake must be set, the hood must be closed, manual transmissions must be in NEU-
TRAL, automatic transmissions must be in PARK, a vehicle speed sensor must be installed, there must be no
VSS faults, and the PTO/Remote PTO feature must not be active.
b. Switch Test - Manual/Automated Transmissions. The following switch test must be performed in 60 sec-
onds or less. Transition the CC/PTO On/Off switch from the OFF to the ON position and leave at ON, the
ICON lamp begins to flash at a 5 Hz rate. Press the clutch pedal and move the shift lever out of the NEU-
TRAL position, the ICON lamp begins to flash at a 2.5 hz rate. Move the shift level back to the NEUTRAL
position and release the clutch pedal. If the switch test is successful and the arming conditions are still met,
the ICON system will become armed. Once armed, moving the transmission out of NEUTRAL will disable
the ICON system.
c. Switch Test - Automatic Transmissions. The following switch test must be performed in 60 seconds or
less. Transition the CC/PTO On/Off switch from the OFF to the ON position and leave at ON, the ICON
lamp begins to flash at a 5 Hz rate. Press the brake pedal and move the shift lever out of the PARK position,
the ICON lamp begins to flash at a 2.5 hz rate. Move the shift level back to the PARK position and release
the brake pedal. If the switch test is successful and the arming conditions are still met, the ICON system will
become armed.
a. Disable. The driver may manually disable the ICON system by turning the keyswitch to OFF.
b. Abort. The driver may manually abort the Wait Period by placing the CC/PTO On/Off switch to the OFF
position. The Wait Period will automatically abort when the accelerator pedal is pressed, the PTO/Remote
PTO feature becomes active, some ICON faults become active,
c. Lockout. During the Wait Period, the ICON system becomes locked out when an interlock is violated or the
vehicle moves (VSS input detected). An interlock is violated if the parking brake is disengaged, the hood is
opened, a manual/automated transmission is shifted out of neutral, or an automatic transmission is shifted
out of park.
Select Cab Comfort Mode. The ICON system typically enters the Cab Comfort mode when the driver selects it dur-
ing the Wait Period, or anytime after key-on. The driver may initiate Cab Comfort mode by pressing the Cab Thermo-
stat ON/MODE switch and, if necessary, selecting a function.
a. Auto Function Select. When the ON/MODE switch is pressed, ambient air temperature is compared to two
thermostat parameters. If ambient air temperature is less than the Thermostat Auto Heating parameter, the
Heat function will be automatically selected. If ambient air temperature is greater than the Thermostat Auto
Cooling parameter, the Cool function will be automatically selected. The Cab Thermostat will display HEAT
or COOL to indicate which function has been selected.
b. Manual Function Select. If the Heat or Cool function was not automatically selected when the ON/MODE
switch was pressed, the driver must select the Heat or Cool function using the Cab Thermostat. The Cab
Thermostat will display HEAT or COOL to indicate which function has been selected. If ambient air temper-
ature is greater than the Thermostat Disable Heating parameter, the Heat function cannot be selected. If
ambient air temperature is less than the Thermostat Disable Cooling parameter, the Cool function cannot be
selected.
c. Adjust Target Cab Temperature. The Heat Set Point and Cool Set Point are still programmed to their most
recently saved values. If the driver wishes to change the target cab temperature when the Heat function is
used, he may adjust the Heat Set Point. If the driver wishes to change the target cab temperature when the
Cool function is used, he may adjust the Cool Set Point. He may also wish to adjust the Range which applies
to both Heat and Cool functions.
a. Heat Function. If the Heat function is selected, the Cab Thermostat will request engine operation when cab
temperature falls to the Heat Set Point minus the Range value. The Cab Thermostat will flash HEAT to indi-
cate engine operation is requested. The Cab Thermostat will continue to request engine operation until cab
temperature reaches the Heat Set Point. The Cab Thermostat will light HEAT steady to indicate the function
is selected but not active.
b. Cool Function. If the Cool function is selected, the Cab Thermostat will request engine operation when cab
temperature reaches the Cool Set Point plus the Range value. The Cab Thermostat will flash COOL to indi-
cate engine operation is requested. The Cab Thermostat will continue to request engine operation until cab
temperature falls to the Cool Set Point. The Cab Thermostat will light COOL steady to indicate the function
is selected but not active.
c. Continuous Engine Run. The Cab Thermostat will continuously request engine operation upon the occur-
rence of a reduced engine-off event if ambient air temperature is extreme. These conditions are defined
under the Thermostat Extreme Cold parameter. Under these conditions, the Cab Thermostat will continue to
request engine operation until keyed off.
Cool-Down State
Cool-Down Operation. The ICON system enters the Cool-Down state at the conclusion of the Wait Period or Warm-
Up state. When the ICON system enters the Cool-Down state, the engine is shut down. The Ignition Bus Relay ener-
gizes, and the vehicle’s high-current electrical systems become unpowered. The fuel shutoff valve is also deenergized,
shutting off the flow of fuel, to limit battery load. The ICON lamp will continue to flash at a 1 Hz rate. The PTO/
Remote PTO feature is still disabled. An engine start procedure is performed when oil temperature falls below 60º F,
battery voltage falls below 12.2 volts, or the Cab Thermostat requests engine operation. The ICON system will auto-
matically transition to the Warm-Up state if the engine starts without occurrence of any disable, abort, or lockout con-
ditions.
a. Disable. The driver may manually disable the ICON system by turning the keyswitch to OFF.
b. Abort. The Cool-Down state may be manually aborted by starting the engine via the Start switch. It is not
necessary to cycle the keyswitch through OFF.
c. Lockout. During the Cool-Down state, the ICON system becomes locked out when any of the following
conditions occurs: the vehicle moves (VSS input detected), the CC/PTO On/Off switch is placed to OFF,
some ICON faults become active, or an interlock is violated. An interlock is violated if the parking brake is
disengaged, the hood is opened, a manual/automated transmission is shifted out of Neutral, or an automatic
transmission is shifted out of Park.
Engine Autostart. When the ICON system is operating in the Cool-Down state, an engine autostart is attempted
when oil temperature falls below 60º F, battery voltage falls below 12.2 volts, or the Cab Thermostat requests engine
operation.
a. Start Conditions. Before an engine autostart may proceed, the keyswitch must be ON, the engine must be
stopped, the vehicle must be stopped (no VSS input), and the Vehicle Setup VSS Type parameter must be
anything other than None.
c. Attempt Start. To attempt an engine start when the ICON Pre-Lube feature is disabled, the ICON Starter
relay is energized, causing the existing OEM starter relay to energize, which engages the starter. The relays
will deenergize, and the starter will disengage, when 200 engine RPM is not detected in the first 2 seconds or
14 seconds has elapsed since the ICON Starter relay was energized.
d. Retry. If the time period elapses before 200 RPM is detected, the ICON system will wait about one minute
to allow time for the starter motor to cool down. Then, the ICON Starter relay is energized for a second
engine start attempt identical to the first.
e. Autostart Failure. The ICON system deenergizes the ICON starter relay, and abandons further autostart
attempts, when the engine fails to start on the second attempt, the vehicle moves (VSS input detected), a
VSS fault becomes active, the keyswitch is turned OFF, or an interlock is violated. An interlock is violated if
the parking brake is disengaged, the hood is opened, a manual transmission is shifted out of Neutral, or an
automatic transmission is shifted out of Park.
Warm-Up State
Warm-Up Operation. The ICON system enters the Warm-Up state after the ICON system starts the engine during
the Cool-Down state. The Ignition Bus Relay deenergizes, and electrical power is restored to the vehicle’s high-cur-
rent electrical systems if a Cab Comfort request has iniated the start. . The ICON lamp will continue to flash at a 1 Hz
rate. The PTO/Remote PTO feature is still disabled. The engine will operate at a characteristic RPM profile defined
under the ICON Idle Speed parameter. An engine shutdown is performed when there is no request from the Thermo-
stat for engine operation, battery voltage is 13 volts or better, oil temperature is 120º F or higher or has been 80º F or
higher for at least 45 minutes, and the engine has been operating a minimum of 5 minutes. If the engine started due to
a depleted battery, the engine must have operated for a minimum of 120 minutes. The ICON system will transition to
the Cool-Down state if the engine shuts down without occurrence of any disable or lockout conditions.
a. Disable. The driver may manually disable the ICON system by turning the keyswitch to OFF.
b. Lockout. During the Warm-Up state, the ICON system becomes locked out when any of the following con-
ditions occurs: the vehicle moves (VSS input detected), the CC/PTO On/Off switch is placed to OFF, some
ICON faults become active, or an interlock is violated. An interlock is violated if the parking brake is disen-
gaged, the hood is opened, a manual/automated transmission is shifted out of Neutral, or an automatic trans-
mission is shifted out of Park.
Lockout State
Lockout Operation. The ICON system can enter the Lockout state when an interlock violation occurs during the
Wait Period, the Cool-Down state, or the Warm-Up state. When the ICON system enters the Lockout state, the engine
shuts down if running and the ICON lamp is turned off. The PTO/Remote PTO feature is still disabled. The Ignition
Bus Relay is energized, and the vehicle’s high-current electrical systems are unpowered. During the Lockout state, the
engine cannot start, either manually or by an engine autostart. The ICON system will remain in the Lockout state until
the driver turns the keyswitch OFF.
Disabled Condition
Disable Operation. The ICON system can be disabled from any ICON system operating state by turning the key-
switch off. When the ICON system becomes disabled, the engine shuts down if running. The ICON lamp extin-
guishes if lit. The PTO/Remote PTO feature becomes enabled if disabled by the ICON system. The Ignition Bus
Relay deenergizes (if energized), and the vehicle’s high-current electrical systems become powered (if unpowered).

Programming. If the ICON system is desired and the minimum ICON components are installed, then the Idle Shut-
down feature and the ICON feature are enabled by Cummins. If the ICON system is not desired or the minimum
ICON components are not installed, then the ICON feature is disabled by Cummins at the factory.
Note: The ICON Starter relay shares a reconfigurable pinout with the Starter Lockout relay. The Starter
Lockout feature cannot be enabled when the ICON feature is enabled.
Note: The ICON Starter relay shares a reconfigurable pinout with the Electronic Air Compressor Governor
(E-Governor). The Electronic Air Compressor Governor feature cannot be enabled when the ICON feature is
enabled. A Cummins supplied shorting plug is also required.
Note: The ICON System requires that a vehicle speed sensor be installed on the vehicle before the system
can be armed. The Vehicle Setup VSS Type parameter must be anything other than None. Refer to AEB
15.21 and AEB 15.22 for details on the VSS parameter.
Note: On Signature and ISX engines, an ICON engine brake harness must be installed before the ICON fea-
ture is enabled. The ICON Harness Installed feature must be enabled.
Operation. Whenever the engine is running and the ICON system is not armed, a shutdown timer is maintained. The
shutdown timer runs when the following conditions are both met at once: the engine is operating at a constant engine
speed, and the vehicle is stopped. The timer resets when there is a change to throttle position, service brake, clutch or
the CC/PTO ON switch is transitioned from ON to OFF. is changed or the vehicle is moved. When the shutdown
timer has run, uninterrupted, for the period of time defined by the Idle Shutdown Timer parameter, the engine is shut
down. Thirty seconds prior to this, the ICON lamp flashes to notify the driver of the impending shutdown.
Programming. To encourage the use of the ICON feature, the Idle Shutdown Timer parameter should be set to the
amount of time the engine is allowed to idle with no driver present.. If no encouragement is needed (i.e. owner-opera-
tor), the Idle Shutdown Timer parameter should be set to its greatest value. This will reduce the incidence of unex-
pected engine shutdown.

Time
ICON Engine Cycle
a. Ramp Up. An ICON engine cycle begins when the ICON system is armed or the ICON system starts the
engine. The engine initially operates at an RPM defined by the Idle Engine Speed parameter or its adjusted
value. This parameter is owned by the Idle Governor. The engine will operate at this RPM for about 15 sec-
onds (Warm-Up state only), then will begin to slowly ramp towards the ICON Idle Speed Parameter.
b. With Standard Alternator. If battery voltage exceeds 13.0V before the ICON Idle Speed Parameter is
achieved, it is likely that the vehicle contains a standard alternator. Engine RPM will stop ramping when the
ICON Idle Speed Parameter is achieved. The engine will operate at this RPM until conditions are met for
engine shutdown.
c. With Self-Excited Alternator. If supply voltage does not reach 13.0V before the ICON Idle Speed parame-
ter is achieved, it is likely that the vehicle contains a self-excited alternator. Engine RPM will continue to
ramp up slowly until an ECM supply voltage of 13.0V is detected, or the engine achieves 1400 RPM. Then,
the engine ramps slowly back to the ICON Idle Speed parameter. The engine will operate at this RPM until
conditions are met for engine shutdown.
d. Ramp Down. Conditions are met for engine shutdown when the ICON system has achieved its desired bat-
tery charge, block temperature, and possibly cab temperature. When this occurs, engine speed will slowly
ramp to the Idle Engine Speed parameter or its adjusted value, when the engine will shut down. If the engine
is shut down by something other than the ICON system, the ramp-down does not occur. Ramp Down is
skipped in the event of a lockout condition.
Programming. Lower settings of the ICON Idle Speed parameter may improve fuel economy but may not provide
adequate heating in extremely cold climates. Higher settings of the ICON Idle Speed parameter will ensure adequate
heating in extremely cold climates, but may reduce fuel economy.
Operation. The ICON Harness Installed feature reduces the number of engine compression brake drivers. Refer to
the ICON Versus 6-Level Engine Brake Harness diagram. When the ICON Harness Installed feature is disabled, all
three engine brake solenoids are separately driven. When the ICON Harness Installed feature is enabled, S1 and S3
are driven by the same driver, and S2 is driven by a second driver. The extra driver is used for the Engine Start alarm.
The ICON Harness Installed feature reduces the number of engine compression brake levels from six to three. The
maximum braking horsepower remains the same, but there are fewer intermediate braking levels.
Programming. The ICON Harness Installed feature comes from the factory already programmed, and does not nor-
mally need to be re-programmed unless the ECM is serviced. If the ICON engine brake harness is installed, the ICON
Harness Installed feature should be enabled. If the 6-level engine brake harness is installed, the ICON Harness
Installed feature should be disabled.

Programming. The ICON Cab Thermostat Installed feature is usually enabled whenever the ICON feature is
enabled. The feature may remain enabled even if there is no Cab Thermostat present.
Operation. When the ICON system has momentarily stopped the engine (Cool-Down state) and oil temperature falls
below 60º F, battery voltage falls below 12.2 volts, or the Cab Thermostat requests engine operation, an engine
autostart is attempted if all start conditions are met. To attempt an engine start, the ICON Starter relay is energized,
activating the pre-lube system. The pre-lube system delays starter engagement for as long as eight seconds, during
which time engine oil is circulated by a pump. At the conclusion of the pump delay, the pre-lube system allows the
existing OEM starter relay to energize, engaging the starter. The starter will disengage when 200 engine RPM is
detected or 10 seconds has elapsed since the ICON Starter relay was energized.
Programming. If the vehicle contains a compatible pre-lube system, the ICON Pre-Lube feature should be enabled.
A compatible pre-lube system delays crank for 8 seconds or less. If the vehicle does not contain a compatible pre-lube
system, then the ICON Pre-Lube feature should be disabled.

Operation. When the driver presses the Cab Thermostat ON/MODE button following key-on, the Cab Thermostat
will check the ambient air temperature as measured by the ICON Ambient Temperature Sensor. If ambient air temper-
ature is less than the Thermostat Auto Heating parameter, the Heat function will be automatically selected. The Cab
Thermostat will display HEAT to indicate the Heat function has been selected. If ambient air temperature is greater
than the Thermostat Auto Heating parameter, the Heat function will not be automatically selected.
Programming. Set the Thermostat Auto Heating parameter to the highest ambient air temperature at which cab heat-
ing is always needed. Higher values will increase the automation of the Cab Thermostat.
Note: The Thermostat Auto Heating parameter should be less than or equal to the Thermostat Auto Cooling
parameter.
Operation. When the driver presses the Cab Thermostat ON/MODE button following key-on, the Cab Thermostat
will check the ambient air temperature as measured by the ICON Ambient Temperature Sensor. If ambient air temper-
ature is greater than the Thermostat Auto Cooling parameter, the Cool function will be automatically selected. The
Cab Thermostat will display COOL to indicate the Cool function has been selected. If ambient air temperature is less
than the Thermostat Auto Cooling parameter, the Cool function will not be automatically selected.
Note: The Thermostat Auto Cooling parameter should be greater than or equal to the Thermostat Auto Heat-
ing parameter.
Operation. The Cab Thermostat monitors the ambient air temperature as measured by the ICON Ambient Tempera-
ture Sensor. When ambient air temperature is less than the Thermostat Disable Heating parameter, the driver may turn
the Heat function on or off as desired. When ambient air temperature is greater than the Thermostat Disable Heating
parameter, the driver may turn the Heat function off but not on.
Programming. Set the Thermostat Disable Heating parameter to the lowest ambient air temperature at which cab
heating is never needed. Lower values may improve fuel economy. Higher values may increase driver comfort.
Operation. The Cab Thermostat monitors the ambient air temperature as measured by the ICON Ambient Tempera-
ture Sensor. When ambient air temperature is greater than the Thermostat Disable Cooling parameter, the driver may
turn the Cool function on or off as desired. When ambient air temperature is less than the Thermostat Disable Cooling
parameter, the driver may turn the Cool function off but not on.
Programming. Set the Thermostat Disable Cooling parameter to the highest ambient air temperature at which cab air
conditioning is never needed. Higher values may improve fuel economy. Lower values may increase driver comfort.
Operation. Ambient air temperature is extreme if less than the Thermostat Extreme Cold parameter or greater than
the Thermostat Extreme Hot parameter. Ambient air temperature is not extreme if greater than the Thermostat
Extreme Cold parameter and less than the Thermostat Extreme Hot parameter.
a. Extended Engine-On Event. An extended engine-on event occurs when the Cab Thermostat continuously
requests engine operation for more than 60 minutes. If an extended engine-on event occurs and ambient air
temperature is not extreme, an E3 fault will become active. If an extended engine-on event occurs and ambi-
ent air temperature is extreme, Cab Thermostat will continuously request engine operation until the ambient
temperature becomes 5 degrees less than the extreem Hot or 5 degrees more than the extreme Cold.
Programming.
a. Thermostat Extreme Hot Parameter. Set this parameter to a lower value if the vehicle will be operating in
extremely hot climates or if the cab is poorly insulated. This may increase driver comfort and decrease the
occurrence of false E3 activation when the Heat function is used. Set this parameter to a higher value if the
vehicle will not be operating in an extremely hot climate, and the cab is also well insulated. This may
increase fuel economy and enforcement of E3 faults.
b. Thermostat Extreme Cold Parameter. Set this parameter to a higher value if the vehicle will be operating
in extremely cold climates or if the cab is poorly insulated. This may increase driver comfort and decrease
the occurrence of false E3 activation when the Cool function is used. Set this parameter to a lower value if
the vehicle will not be operating in an extremely cold climate, and the cab is also well insulated. This may
increase fuel economy and enforcement of E3 faults.
Operation. Detection of the E3 fault is described under the Thermostat Extreme Cold parameter and Thermostat
Extreme Hot parameter. If an E3 fault is active and the Thermostat Response To E3 Fault feature is enabled, the Cab
Thermostat will cycle the engine operation requests, 20 minutes on and 15 minutes off. Engine operation will con-
tinue to cycle until the engine is keyed off. If an E3 fault is active and the Thermostat Response To E3 Fault feature is
disabled, the Cab Thermostat will not request engine operation for the remainder of the session.
Programming. If tampering is unlikely (owner-operator), or false E3 activation has occurred, then the Thermostat
Response To E3 Fault feature should be enabled. If tampering is likely (fleet), and false E3 activation has not
occurred, then the Thermostat Response To E3 Fault feature should be disabled.

Hardware. The ICON lamp consists of a lens assembly, hex nut, locking washer, 12V or 24V bulb, and receptacle
with connector pigtail. It can operate at temperatures from -40 to +85º C. The lamp mates to a Packard Metri-Pack
tower.
Operation. The ICON Starter relay has two positions, CRANK or RUN/STOP. When the ICON system commands
an engine autostart, the relay will transition to the CRANK position. Keyswitch voltage is supplied through normally
open contacts to the existing OEM starter relay. The OEM starter relay applies power to the engine starter, causing it
to engage and the engine to crank. When the engine starts or 2 seconds elapses, the ICON Starter relay transitions to
the RUN/STOP position, and engine cranking ceases. The relay maintains this position when the engine is stopped or
running, permitting manual engine starting using the Start switch, either through NC contacts of the ICON Starter
relay or by some other path.

Nominal Coil Voltage 12 VDC/24 VDC
Maximum Coil Current 2A
Minimum Coil Resistance 6 Ω @ 12V, 12 Ω @ 24V
Maximum Coil Induction 130 mH
Hardware. This relay is a Siemens VF28 series. It is a 1 Form C relay rated at 30 amps continuous. It can operate at
temperatures from -40 to +125º C. The 12V relay has a coil resistance of 90 ohms, the 24V relay has a coil resistance
of 360 ohms. The relay will mate to any standard DIN base, it is shown mating to a Packard bracket mount socket
which is supplied with a terminal retainer. This socket can be mounted individually on a single stud, or it can be inter-
locked with other relays.
Operation. The ICON Ambient Temperature Sensor converts detected temperature into a series resistance. By drop-
ping a voltage across this resistance, the Cab Thermostat can estimate this resistance and convert it into a temperature
value using a lookup table. This temperature is compared to programmable Cab Thermostat parameters to provide the
following functions:
a. Automatic Function Select. When the Cab Thermostat is turned on and ambient air temperature is greater
than the Thermostat Auto Heating parameter, the Heat function is automatically selected. When the Cab
Thermostat is turned on and ambient air temperature is less than the Thermostat Auto Cooling parameter, the
Cool function is automatically selected.
b. Function Inhibit. When ambient air temperature is greater than the Thermostat Disable Heating parameter,
the operator is unable to select the Heat function. When ambient air temperature is less than the Thermostat
Disable Cooling parameter, the operator is unable to select the Cool function.
c. Extended Run Classification. When the Cab Thermostat requests an unusually long engine run time or a
high rate of engine starts, ambient air temperature is compared to the Thermostat Extreme Hot parameter
and Thermostat Extreme Cold parameter. If the temperature is within those values, an E3 fault becomes
active.

PIN MAPPING
Table 14: Pin Mapping with ICON System
Operation. The Alarm signal uses a Switched Source Driver Output pinout, which can exist in one of two states:
Source and Off. The pinout will assume the Source state to sound the alarm. The alarm is sounded prior to every
ICON autostart.

Autostart Interlock Out
a. The Autostart Interlock Out signal is supplied by a Switched Sink Driver Output pinout, which can exist in
one of two states: Sink or Off. If the ICON feature is enabled the pinout will assume Sink for 10 msec and
Off for 10 msec, continuously repeating the pattern. This results in an alternating ground that is applied to
the first autostart interlock switch.
b. If all the interlock switches are closed, the signal is applied to a 10V Switched Pullup Input pinout, which
can exist in one of two states: Grounded or Not Grounded. The Input pinout is Grounded when the Output
pinout is Sinked, the Input pinout is Not Grounded when the Output pinout is Off. This results in a 50 Hz
pulse train with a 50% duty cycle.
c. If this waveform is present at the Input, the interlock is satisfied. When the interlock is satisfied, the ICON
system is allowed to arm if all other arming conditions are met. When armed, the ICON system may start
and run the engine. If the ICON system is already armed when the interlock is violated, the engine will stop
if running, and the ICON system will disarm.
d. The 10 msec. signal must remain present at the Parking Brake In signal at all times during the arming
sequence to insure the brake is on. If this signal is not present, the arming of ICON is not allowed or if
already armed, the engine is shut down and ICON is no longer armed.
Operation. The Engine Brake ICON1 signal and Engine Brake ICON2 signal each use a 10V Switched Pullup Input
pinout. Each pinout can exist in one of two states: Grounded or Not Grounded. Together, these pinout states define a
binary progression of four combinations that permit the selection of as many as three maximum braking levels in
addition to an off condition. Refer to the following table.
Table 15: Engine Brake Switch Logic, Signature and ISX Engines with ICON
Operation. This ICON Enable signal uses a 10V Switched Pullup Input pinout, which can exist in one of two states:
Grounded and Not Grounded. When the pinout is Grounded, the ICON system is allowed to arm if all other arming
conditions are met. When armed, the ICON system may start and run the engine. If the ICON system is already armed
when the pinout transitions to Not Grounded, the engine will stop if running, and the ICON system will become
locked out.
Operation. The ICON Lamp signal uses a Switched Sink Driver Output pinout which can exist in one of two states:
Sink or Off. To light the lamp, the pinout assumes Sink. To extinguish the lamp, the pinout assumes Off.
a. The ICON Starter Relay Low signal uses a Switched Sink Driver Output pinout which can exist in one of
two states: Sink or Off. When an ICON engine autostart is initiated, the pinout assumes Sink. If every
autostart interlock switch is closed, then a return to ground will be present on one side of the ICON Starter
relay coil.
b. The ICON Starter Relay High signal uses a Switched Source Driver Output pinout which can exist in one of
two states: Source or Off. When an ICON engine autostart is initiated, the pinout assumes Source. This sup-
plies Vbatt+ to the other side of the ICON Starter relay coil.
c. If a both a return to ground, and Vbatt+, are applied to the ICON Starter relay coil, the relay will energize.
NO contacts of the relay will close, applying keyswitch voltage to the coil of the existing OEM starter relay.
The existing OEM starter relay energizes, causing the starter to engage.
Operation. The ICON Temperature signal uses the Thermostat Analog Input pinout which is capable of detecting the
value of a continuously variable resistance. This resistance is the current sensor resistance, its value is compared with
a resistance vs. temperature curve to determine ambient air temperature. The Cummins standard 10K calibration is
used, refer to OEM Components, ICON Ambient Temperature Sensor. The Cab Thermostat compares detected tem-
perature to several adjustable parameters to enable the Heat function, Cool function, or engine cycle.

Maximum Nominal Current 300 µA
No-Load Pin Voltage, High Pin w/r/t Low Pin 5V
Operation. The Idle Shutdown Relay signal uses a Switched Source Driver Output pinout which can exist in one of
two states: POWERED or SHUTDOWN. The relay is in the POWERED, or deenergized, state at all times with one
exception. When ICON is armed and in any state other than a cab comfort mode and the WAIT state, the relay is in
the SHUTDOWN state. When the relay is deenergized, high-current devices receive electrical power through NC
contacts of the relay. When the relay is energized, the high-current systems are unpowered.

Autostart Interlock Out
d. The 10 msec. signal must remain present at the Parking Brake In signal at all times during the arming
sequence to insure the brake is on. If this signal is not present, the arming of ICON is not allowed or if
already armed, the engine is shut down and ICON is no longer armed.
Application. The Start Switch signal is supplied by the existing OEM Start switch to NC contacts of the ICON
Starter relay. This signal permits the driver to perform a manual engine start. The Starter Relay Supply Signal is sup-
plied by the Starter Relay fuse to normally open contacts of the ICON Starter relay. This signal permits the ICON sys-
tem to perform an engine autostart. It is critical that the Starter Relay Supply signal voltage be present when the
keyswitch is ON, and absent when the keyswitch is OFF.
Operation. Energizing voltage for the existing OEM starter relay is supplied through the center contact of the ICON
Starter relay. When the ICON Starter relay is deenergized, the OEM starter relay coil is connected to the existing
OEM start switch. The driver may press this switch to energize the existing OEM starter relay and engage the starter.
When the ICON Starter relay is energized, the existing OEM starter relay coil is connected to the Starter Relay fuse.
Operation. The Thermostat Enable signal uses the Thermostat Pulldown Input pinout which can exist in one of two
states: Key On or Key Off. When the pinout is at Key On, the Cab Thermostat’s Cab Comfort mode or Set mode is
available. When the pinout is at Key Off, the Cab Thermostat does not operate.
Item Requirement
Number of States Two: KEY ON or KEY OFF
Current 12 mA @ 12V, 24 mA @ 24V
Maximum Key-On Source Voltage 32 V
Minimum Key-On Source Voltage 4.8 V
Maximum Key-Off Source Voltage 3.2 V
Operation. The Thermostat Data signal is supplied by the Thermostat Sink Driver Output pinout, which can exist in
one of two states: Sink or Off. The pinout is rapidly toggled between these states as required to define 31 bits of serial
data over a 3.5-second period. The signal is applied to an ECM 10V Switched Pullup Input pinout, which can exist in
one of two states: Grounded or Not Grounded. The Input pinout is Grounded when the Output pinout is Sinked, the
Input pinout is Not Grounded when the Output pinout is Off. This permits the ECM to monitor the data and to provide
the appropriate response.
