Chapter 2: Functions and Applications

‘Functions’ is our first (1st) grading ‘general mathematics lesson’, that’s why this
topic is not new to me. I can just reread my notes, so that I can recall how does ‘Functions’
works.

A FUNCTION is a relationship between two variables, such that for every

input, there is exactly one output. A function may be represented by graph,
equation, set of ordered pairs, table of value, or mapping diagram. A graph is a
function if it passes the vertical line test. That is, if vertical lines are drawn across
the graph and the graph touch every vertical line at exactly one point, then the graph
represents a function. An equation is a function if every input for the independent
variable yields only one value for the dependent variable y. A set of ordered pairs is
a function if there is no repeated first coordinate. The domain of a function is the set
of all possible values for the independent variable. The range of a function is the set
of all possible values for the dependent variable. To evaluate a function given a
graph locate the given x-coordinate on the x-axis, and then locate the corresponding
y-coordinate on the y-axis. A function can be used to model a real-life situation or
phenomenon, because it simulates a cause and effect relationship between the input
and the output. A LOGARITHM is an exponent which b must have to produce y. The
equations: x=log b y ∧ y=b x are equivalent. The first equation is in logarithmic form
and the second equation is in exponential form. THERE ARE TWO TYPES
FUNCTIONS: Common Logarithm and Natural Logarithm. Common Logarithm are
logarithms with base 10 for example; 10n =m while Natural Logarithm are
logarithms with base e for example;e a=8. MATHEMETICAL MODEL is a function
that is used to describe real-life situations.
The different kind of function can be seen and used in our daily lives just for
example; the building we’ve seen every day indicates the used of ‘Linear Function.’
Throwing a rock indicates the used of ‘Quadratic function.’ Exponential Growth and Decay,
and World Population Growth indicates the used of ‘Exponential Function.’ And last is the
‘Logarithmic Function’ it is an exponential function, but I don’t know what is the used of it
in our daily lives.
