Two shelf types are available for the 1830 PSS OCS: the 1830 PSS-36 and the 1830 PSS-64.
The shelves can be installed in two ways, depending on the appropriate standard.
[1] For the ETSI market, the “Alcatel-Lucent ETSI One Rack” is used. It has been designed for
equipment that consumes high power. It provides enhanced fiber management to facilitate the
installation phase due to the increased number of cables and fibers in the Network Element
Element.
[2] The Seismic Network Bay Frame is recommended for the ANSI market.

[1] The entire node is composed of the 500mm-wide basic shelf, with a [2] high-capacity
backplane. It offers 120 Gbit/s capacity per interface slot.
[3] The shelf contains fan units, power interfaces, a dust filter and an air baffle.
[4] The slots are partitioned into common slots for control and switching cards, and [5] port slots
for I/O cards
cards. The port slots are organized into two rows
rows.
The shelf has been designed according to the multi-size slot concept, which supports different
card dimensions. This allows finer shelf configuration granularity. The choice between [6] half-slot
cards, available in future release, and full-slot cards will be done independently for each full-size
I/O slot. [7]

This is the Alcatel-Lucent One Rack.
[1] A special power distribution subrack is required at the top of every 1830 PSS-64 subrack
because it is a Top Rack Unit (TRU) for the shelf. This High Power Connection, Fuse and Alarm
Panel terminates the central office and the system power wires.
[2] It accepts two times three independent power inputs from the central office battery; these are
protected with circuit breakers. [3] It supports a total electrical power of 11 kW over a voltage
range from –48 V to –60 V.
[4] The High Power Connection, Fuse and Alarm Panel also hosts a Rack Alarm Unit. This unit
summarizes the alarms of the subrack and makes them visible by its Rack Top Lamps. The Rack
Alarm Unit also generates alarms if a circuit breaker is open or an internal error is detected.
[5, 6] The High Power Connection, Fuse and Alarm panel supports one 1830 PSS-64 subrack with
two ppower supply
pp y filter cards.

[1] The PSS-36 uses one fan per shelf with internal redundant fans. The Fan Unit works in "pull-
only" arrangement, pulling the air from the bottom to the top. [2] The PSS-64 uses two fan trays,
each including internal redundant fans. The fan units within the PSS-64 work in "push-pull"
arrangement. The upper Fan unit pulls the air from the bottom to the top and the lower fan unit
pushes the air from bottom to the top.
Each fan tray ensures full operation even if there is a single fan failure. The equipment remains
operational in the normal temperature range. The fail condition may affect the lifetime of the
system; therefore a timely repair is necessary.
The airflow is in front of the power interface. [2]

Different matrix types are available, depending on the type of the shelf.
[1] The 1830 PSS-64 shelf can be equipped with MT1T9 matrix cards. These provide a switching
capacity of 1.92 Tbit/s [Terabit per second] or [2] MT3T8 cards with 3.8 Tbit/s. The matrix cards
are placed in the common area of the shelf in slots 71 and 72.
[3] The PSS
PSS-36
36 shelf also hosts a 1
1.92
92 Tbit/s matrix
matrix. This is a compact version: the MT1T9c
MT1T9c. [4]
There is also a matrix card with a reduced size of 960 Gbit/s available called the MT960c.
The matrix cards are equipped in slots 11 and 15.
[5] They must always be equipped in 1+1 protection.
[6] All matrix cards provide complete non-blocking connectivity between all I/O slots. [7, 8] The
bandwidth allocation is flexible for all I/O slots without limitations. I/O cards can be activated until
the provisioned matrix capacity is reached.

Several interface cards are available. These offer different functionalities and interfaces:
[1, 2] The client interface cards provide access for different types of client signals. They differ in
the number of interfaces on the cards, the type of client interfaces, and the bandwidth of those
interfaces. Client interface cards are also referred to as port units.
[2 3] Another type of card is the uplink card,
[2, card or Switchponder.
Switchponder Uplink cards generate a colored
wavelength on the line side that is equivalent to the optical Transponder of a WDM system.
[4, 5,6] The last type is a filter card. Only the SFC8 filter card is available. It performs CWDM
multiplexing and de-multiplexing of up to eight optical channels. This card plays a special role
since it is not connected to the matrix and doesn’t use matrix capacity.
Now let’s take a closer look at the different cards.

[1, 2, 3, 4] As mentioned on the previous slide, client interface cards are available for different
bandwidths.
[5, 6, 7, 8] Universal interface cards combine various options for multiple interface types, line
rates and backplane signal formats on a single board type. They provide the most flexible options
for p
port type
yp provisioning
p g and reduce the board type
yp variants to a minimum.
They offer access for different line rates transmitted to [9] the matrix.
The application-optimized interface cards are classical interface card types optimized for specific
applications. They offer port types with limited port type provisioning options dedicated to a
specific application, and are cost-optimized for applications with high port demand of the same
type.
[10] The 24 x GbE and the 8xGbE card is based on the 24 x ANY. It offers only eight interfaces
y, the 24 x SDH/SONET
as a low-cost alternative. Similarly, / card is available for STM or STS client
signals.
[11] This also applies to the 10G cards.

This card is a universal I/O card. As the name suggests, it allows flexible configuration capability
per port for various line rates and operation modes during system operation. [1] It holds up to 24
SFP optical modules. Depending on the type of traffic connected, two operation modes are
available: [2] the SDH or SONET over OTH [O-T-H] mode, and the [3] Ethernet over OTH mode.
The p
ports are organized
g into 3 groups
g p of 8 ports;
p ; each group
g p can be configured
g for one of the two
operation modes.
[4] Different SDH or SONET client rates are supported in the TDM mode. [5] They are mapped
into ODU0 or ODU1 depending on the signal rate. [6] The Regenerator Section Overhead of the
client signals is monitored by the Regenerator Section - Non- Intrusive Monitoring (RS-NIM)
function.
[7] The Ethernet over OTH mode offers Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Traffic is mapped into ODU-0
using the Generic Mapping Procedure.

The 10x10G ANY and 4x10G ANY cards provide the same functions but differ in the number of
available interfaces.
In the “OTH” [1] and the “OTH Client” [2] mode, these cards support two modes of operation to
offer different multiplexing and mapping possibilities.
The OTH mode is available for [3] OTM
OTM-00.2
2 and OTM
OTM-0 0.2e
2e interfaces
interfaces. For these interfaces the [4]
Alcatel-Lucent proprietary enhanced forward error correction is supported.
[5] The OTM-0.2 is de-mapped and the high-order ODU-2 traffic is connected to the matrix.
The low-order ODU-2 is multiplexed into ODU-1 or ODU-0 and connected to the matrix.
[6] The OTM-0.2e is mapped into an ODU-2e signal.
[7] The OTH Client mode offers connectivity for 10 Gigabit Ethernet and STM-64/OC-192 client
signals.
[8] For the latter interface, the signals are mapped into an ODU-2.
[9, 10] There are two ways to transmit the Ethernet traffic: it can be mapped into an ODU-2
using the Generic Framing Procedure, or it can be mapped into an ODU-2e using Constant Bit
Rate mapping.
