Keeping quiet by Pablo Neruda

1 ) What is the significance of number twelve ?

Answer: The number twelve is symbolic to the markings on the clock that measures the hours, the
months and all the zodiac signs. The poet draws a comparison between the routine movements of
the clock and the single-minded pursuit of human beings. The poet asks us to count to twelve
because this momentary pause will help us introspect and review our course of action. Keeping quiet
ensures peace giving humans the much required respite.

2) Why does the poet advice people not to speak in any language?
Answer: The people of the world have been indulging in wars and bloodshed due to minor excuses.
If we keep quiet and avoid expressing in any language we may
reason and find causes for the disputes. This will ensure peace and prosperity.

3) Face of the Earth (meaning)

Answer: It refers to the various continents and countries located on the surface of the earth.

4) Why has the word “Let’s” been repeated?

for a short while. Man has used his arms only to destroy and kill. So the poet advises
man not to move his arms so much to harm others.

even threaten themselves with death.

under apparent stillness. It is the greatest creator. It may appear dead on the surface during autumn
and winter but it preserves the seeds of life which come alive in spring and summer.

8) Why does the speaker count up to twelve?

Answer: It is a part of an exercise that gives us time to meditate and indulge in introspection. All
distractions are washed away and man enjoys a moment of bliss as he is able to understand himself.

Answer: The poet wants all of us to keep quiet and experience the moment of peace. He wants the
readers to ponder over his advice and says that he will go and pass this message to another group of
