    The Ajanta Caves are 29 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments dating from the 2nd century BCE to 650 CE in India. They include paintings and rock-cut sculptures described as some of the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art. The caves served as monasteries for monks and places of learning for merchants and pilgrims. While vivid colors and musical wall paintings were once abundant, Caves 16, 17, 19 and 26 represent the largest collection of surviving ancient Indian wall paintings. In 1983, the Ajanta Caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
