(NARRATIVE REPORT)

ACTIVITY 1

This report contains the struggles about two persons who endured a chronic illness
and how they managed to cope up with it. The life of someone with a chronic illness is
changed in numerous ways that a ways that a healthy cannot get it. There is remarkable
impact to the social, psychological, financial, recreational, and occupational functioning of
someone with chronic disease.

On November 18, 2020, I interviewed someone who is not my relative but a close
friend of mine and her name is Ana Jhalrem Paunil. She was suffering from different
chronic diseases not one but multiple diseases. I based my questions from the PE Modules
given by my teacher, the answers of Ana stated below.

Ana drew her road map to success by basing it on her most and least priorities, to
focus on the important matter and get things done accordingly. She said that the most
essential factors were time management, consistency and balanced productivity. The
ability to focus on what needs to be done and to overcome distractions was one of her
determinants of success. Yes, she lean on to her family and loved ones in all aspects
whenever she need to, but if she can still handle it alone then she will do it by herself. The
emotions, present realization of things and experience of struggles she in at the moment
can change or affect her road map as she was prone to be influenced by her surroundings a
lot. Ana change her road map a lot throughout her journey, it may be because she already
attained what was in it and/or she does not want to attain what has drawn it anymore.

She was very sickly as a child, been diagnosed with asthma until now and
ventricular septal defect, admitted to hospital a lot because of pneumonia, allergies, urinary
tract infection, and gastroenteritis, and had a very poor immune system. Yes, in fact she
inherited asthma from her mother who also inherited it from her grandmother. Asthma is a
condition in which your airways narrow and swell and may produce extra mucus. This can make
breathing difficult and trigger coughing, a whistling sound (wheezing) when you breathe out
and shortness of breath. Asthma, diabetes, and heart diseases are the most common
diseases/illnesses in her family. She is a very anxious person who worries and over thinks
a lot.
Ana was enrolled in a taekwondo class when she was young. She started when she
was 8 or 9 years old and ended/quit it when she turned 13. She attended the class thrice a
week. It took up to two to three hours per session/class. She was advice to refrain doing
strenuous and hardcore activities, to avoid foods that can trigger her allergies and asthma
like egg or the like, and to take multivitamins and puff inhaler once a day. The doctor
prescribed her a salbutamol inhaler for asthma, benadryl for allergies, diuretics for her
heart and multivitamins for her immune system. She had been taking these since she was
young. She would exercise, stop worrying and stressing about things, and never quit her
taekwondo class and if she were to look back. She said that physical activity really had a
great impact on her because the lack of doing it triggered a lot of diseases and illnesses.

My next interviewee was my close relative specifically, my mother’s older sister. She
was my aunt and her name is Elisa S. Borres. My aunt was enduring diabetes for almost 2
years now. Diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by high levels of glucose in the
blood. People like my Aunt who has diabetes consequently they produce little or no insulin
and therefore require insulin injections to control their blood glucose levels.

Before she had that illness, my Aunt really loves eating sweets. My other Aunts also
told me that she rarely eaten a single meal without sweets to satisfy her. Therefore, her diet
was full of sweets and not long after, her body started to experience symptoms that she just
neglected and thought that it was nothing. She continued her excessive consumption of
foods and beverages rich in sugar. After the long run, it was too late. My Aunt was sent to
the hospital because she frequently fainted and most of her small cuts in her became deep
wounds that took too long to heal. Later on, she was diagnosed with diabetes. This chronic
disease had a huge impact on my Aunt and to our family. At first, she was depressed after
hearing that she had diabetes and she wasn’t able to do things that she normally do which
made her feel a lot more gloomy and as her niece, the only thing I could do is to keep check
of her so that she can maintain her medication. Then after a few talks of encouragement
with her friends and especially from our family, her spirit was uplifted which made her
realize that if she let this sickness take over her, she will succumb to despair which will also
greatly affect the people who care for her. Therefore, that is when she started helping
herself by exercising and disciplining her consumption of sweets. Eventually, by changing
her bad habits into betters ones, which can benefit her well-being. She became a healthy
and active person again. My Aunt Elisa now lives a healthy lifestyle and continues to live
her life for her family.
ACTIVITY 2
Write an essay on the pursuit of his or her success and happiness.

Based on the data I have gathered and based on what we have talked about, Ana tries
to look at things on the positive side, she never allow herself to look for the negative side
because she know that it will result into something ungrateful. She still strives to pursue her
dreams in life by doing good in her studies with the help of her friends and living a healthy life.
Her main source of inspiration and happiness is her family and friends, it is actually good to
sorround herself with those people who loves and care for her to divert her pain into
something helpful and beneficial . She doesn't let her illness take over and hinder her from
doing the things she loves to do and what she's capable of. Instead she dominated her sickness
by staying healthy in a way of eating nutritious foods like vegetables, fruits, drinking lots of
water to keep hydrated and intake vitamins to strengthen her immune system. She also
practice exercising regularly to maintain healthy life and so that her body will get use to it
because the more she engage herself to the unusual habit, the less her asthma will attack her.
She also avoids places in where people smokes so that she won't trigger her asthma attacks.
She is really getting there, trying to fight and prevent in the least she can do to reach her
happiness and success that she is longing and wanting for.

In the case of my aunt Elisa, I noticed the way she shared her thoughts about my
questions are somewhat amusing. Even though, my Aunt has gone through difficult times in her
life. There's always that part of her that makes other people feel enlightened by her presence
and charm. She still have her own ways of becoming happy despite of her disease.

After when her friends give her some words of encouragement and her family who
continue to give her support, she is now more optimistic and focused on helping herself on
regaining her healthy life. She also now controls her habit of eating too much sweets and
regularly takes medication. My Aunt's happiness revolves on her friends, ornamental plants and
of course us, her family. My other Aunts invite her to join religious activities on our church then
her friends encourage her to become physically fit, so in that way,the people around her helps
my Aunt back on track.

ACTIVITY 3
Accomplish the table below.
QUESTIONS YES NO
1. I am currently physically active.
2. I intend to become more physically active in the next 6 months. For
activity to be regular, it must add up to a total of 30 or more minutes per
day and be done at least 5 days per week. For example, you could take one
30-minute walk or three 10-minute walks each day.
3. I currently engage in regular physical activity.
4. I have been regularly physically active for the past 6 months.

I can conclude that my current status is being not physically fit for some personal
reasons. I can say that, I am not able to exercise because of my daily life activities. I do not have
enough time to execute for I focus too much in studying, joining talent organizations and some
religious matters. To be honest, I tried to exercise 40 minutes a day last 2 months but because
of other matters where I had a hard time management. I lost my focus and had a hard time to
recover. Sometimes, laziness also a big hindrance in exercising daily for it kills my time and
pulling me down in aiming what's best for me. I am truly hoping that, this subject will help me
to get right back to the track to lose weight and have a healthy lifestyle for my future life's
betterment.
