We see parallel and perpendicular lines everywhere. Lines on a pad paper, pedestrian lane, fence, etc. suggest parallel line;
while electrical post, window pane and crucifix are just few examples of perpendicular lines.
Can you name more examples showing parallel and perpendicular lines?
There are certain conditions to prove that two or more lines to be parallel lines or perpendicular lines.
PARALLEL LINES are a set of lines that are at the same distance with each other and never intersect.
Two lines are parallel if:
a) They are coplanar and do not intersects
M A
The quadrilateral formed the plane MATH.
Segment MA lies on plane MATH; segment HT lies on plane MATH
Therefore, MA is coplanar with HT and Segment MA ∥ HT H HT T
Alternate Exterior angles are congruent Same side Interior angles are supplementary
∠ 1 + ∠ 2 = 180°
∠ 1 ≅ ∠ 2 and ∠ 3 ≅ ∠ 4 and
∠ 3 + ∠ 4 = 180°
c) If two coplanar lines are perpendicular to the d) If two lines are parallel to another third line,
same line then they are parallel then they are parallel to each other
l || m || n
PERPENDICULAR LINES are set of lines that intersect to form right angles.
c) If a transversal is perpendicular to the first line, then it is also perpendicular to the second line parallel to the first line.
Example 1.
Find the value of x so that the two lines are parallel
To find the value of x, let us go back to the properties of parallel lines cut by a transversal.
(x + 86)° is the alternate exterior angle of angle
(24 + 2x) °, therefore they are congruent.
Solution: 24 + 2x = x + 86
2x - x = 86 - 24
x = 62
Example 2.
Find the value of x so that the lines are parallel.
