1 INTRODUCTION
Dear Student
Greetings and welcome to Business Informatics 2B
We are pleased to welcome you to Business Informatics IIB and hope that you will find it both
interesting and rewarding. We shall do our best to make your study of this module successful.
You will be well on your way to success if you start studying early in the year and resolve to do
the assignment(s) properly.
This is the first and last tutorial letter that you will receive. This tutorial letter contains important
information about the scheme of work, resources and assignments for this module. We urge
you to read it carefully and to keep it at hand when working through the study material,
preparing the assignment(s), preparing for the examination and directing questions to your
lecturers.
Please read Tutorial Letter 301 in combination with Tutorial Letter 101 as it gives you an idea of
generally important information when studying at a distance and within a particular College.
In Tutorial Letter 101, you will find the assignments and assessment criteria as well as
instructions on the preparation and submission of assignments and the examination. This
tutorial letter also provides all the information you need regarding the prescribed study material
and other resources and how to obtain it. Please study this information carefully and make sure
that you obtain the prescribed material as soon as possible.
We have also included certain general and administrative information about this module.

2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES


2.1 Purpose
This module will be useful to provide intermediate qualified business analyst with the knowledge
to understand information systems and management strategies and the skills to explain how to
manage data resources and identify the role of the internet in a business environment, describe
the enterprise applications and integrations of business processes and enhancing decision
making in the organization
2.2 Outcomes
Specific outcome 1
Demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of organisation, management and
networked enterprise.
Assessment criteria:
➢ The description contains the important features of organizations that managers need to
know to build information systems effectively.
➢ The description contains an evaluation of the impact of systems on business.
➢ The description shows the assessment of how information systems support the activities
of managers.

➢ The description assesses the challenges posed by strategic information systems and
management solutions.
➢ Students describe the importance of information systems in an organization.

Students explain the different types of information systems, organizations, management and

Specific outcome 2:
Demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of information technology infrastructure.
Assessment criteria:
➢ Students explain the different IT infrastructures and platforms and the management of
data resources.
➢ The description contains the levels of IT infrastructure.
➢ The description outlines the organization of data in a traditional as well as in a new
environment.

Specific outcome 3:

Demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of key system application for the digital
age.

Assessment criteria:
➢ Students explain the redesign of an organizational infrastructure.
➢ Students explain the business value of systems and of managing change.
➢ Students explain the management of international information systems.
➢ The explanation describes the correlation of information systems to the business plan.
➢ The description explains business process reengineering and process improvement.

8.1 Assessment criteria
Final mark and year mark
The marks that you obtain by submitting the assignments and writing the examination will
contribute to your Final Mark (FM) for this module. This is in accordance with the approved
Unisa Assessment Policy. For this module, the following formula is used to calculate your Final
Mark (FM):

Final Mark (FM) = 80% of Examination Mark (EM) + 20% of Year Mark (YM).

And the following formula is used to calculate your Year Mark (YM):

(34% of Assignment 03)
It is vital that you complete all the assignments in order to gain the necessary skills to pass the
examination.

All assignments must be submitted via MyMISLab. In other words, you cannot post your
assignments through the South African Postal Service.
8.4 The assignments
There are 12 online assessments (chapter quizzes) activities, all compulsory.
8.5 Other assessment methods

8.6 The examination
Use your Study@Unisa brochure for general examination guidelines and examination
preparation guidelines.
The examination is marked out of 100marks. Please refer to the examination tutorial letter which
will be released closer to the examination date. It is in your best interest to:

• Complete the assessments

• Study and read the textbook and

• Over and above the assignments, work through the Review and Discussion question in
the textbook and visit the e-Tutor site regularly
