MEASUREMENT

TEAC HER M HE L
WHY MEASURE?
• Measurement is important because our eyes
can deceive us.
• Scientists use the International System of
Units (SI).
• Advantages of SI:
1. It helps scientists share and
compare their results.
• 2. All units are based on the number
10 which make conversions easy.

CHOOSING A UNIT
❑A measurement must always include a number
and a unit.
25 cm

❑The unit depends on the size of the object.

❑For example: What unit would you use for the

length of a pencil? For the distance between
cities?
Length: the longest dimension of an
object. We measure length when we want
to know how long something is.

Distance: is a numerical description of

how far apart objects are. We measure
distance when we want to know how far
apart things are from on another.
Tools We Use
Centimeter

Inch
Weight: is the amount
or quantity of heaviness
or mass; amount a
thing weighs.

We measure weight when we want

to know how heavy something is.
Tools We Use
Capacity: is the ability to
hold a fluid. We measure capacity when
want to know how much fluid is in or is
needed for something.

Volume: is the amount of space a

substance (solid or liquid) occupies or
contains in a 3-D object. We measure
volume when we want to know how much
a solid or liquid can fill a 3-D area.

LET’S TRY IT!!!!
LI: I can measure length, weight and
capacity using standard units

Length Weight Capacity

cm and m g and kg ml and l
How would we measure ........ Length

The length of my thumb? centimetres (cm)

The distance to the entrance hall? metres (m)

The distance to the playground? metres (m)

The length of my foot? centimetres (cm)

The width of my book? centimetres (cm)

How would we measure ........ Weight

The weight of a lunchbox? grams (g)

The weight of an apple? grams (g)

The weight of a dog? kilograms (kg)

The weight of a pencil? grams (g)

The weight of a person? kilograms (kg)

How would we measure how
Capacity
much liquid is in ........

A bucket of water? litres (l)

A bottle of juice? millilitres (ml)

A spoonful of medicine? millilitres (ml)

A bath of water? litres (l)

A cup of tea? millilitres (ml)
