IRRATIONAL NUMBERS
An irrational number is a number
that cannot be expressed as a quotient of
two integers. Every irrational number may
be represented by a decimal that neither
repeats nor terminates.
IRRATIONAL NUMBERS
Some irrational numbers are commonly
used in real life. The ratio of the circumference
to the diameter of a circle is an irrational
number, denoted by:

SQUARE ROOT
For all nonnegative numbers , the
square root of (written ) is defined
to be the nonnegative number if and only
if . The symbol is called the
radical sign.
SQUARE ROOT
A number has two square roots: one
positive and the other negative. The
positive square root is also called the
principal square root. Thus, when we write
, this indicates the positive root.
SPEAKING MATHEMATICALLY
is read as “the square root of 16”

is read as “the negative square root of 16”
