Integers refer to the union of the set of whole numbers and the set of negative numbers.

Counting numbers

2
These are numbers that are exact and usually used in counting.
“ZERO (0)” is not an element of counting numbers because you don’t start counting at zero but at once.

Irrational Numbers
Decimals that are nonterminating and nonrepeating numbers are considered irrational numbers.
Irrational numbers are numbers that cannot be expressed in the form where a and bare integers and b

I. Concept Notes

Ascending order is a sorting method in which the sort starts from the lowest to the highest or
the smallest value to the largest value. It means the smallest or earliest value in the order that will come at
the top of the list.
Examples of Ascending Order:
For amount and numbers, the sort is from the smallest value to the largest value. Lower amounts or
numbers must be at the top of the list. Ex: 16, 23, 45, 76, 80.
Descending order is the contradiction of ascending order. That means, it is the opposite process of
writing the numbers in increasing order. Therefore, it can be mentioned as a decreasing order.
In descending order for a given set of numbers, the highest valued number is written first and the lowest
valued number is written at last.
Method in arranging numbers:
Step 1: For a given series of fractions/square root, first convert it into decimal numbers.
Step 2: Find the increasing of the decimal numbers.
Step 3: Finally, place them in a number line.

II. Examples
Arrange the following real numbers in ascending order.
√ √ ,
Write the following numbers in decimal, and then compare these numbers.

Note that
Using the number line,

Therefore, √ √

III. Activity

Directions: Locate the following numbers on the number line by naming the correct point.

√ √

versa.
Values/Graduate Attributes: The learner will become systematic in solving real-life problems.

I. Concept/Digest

SCIENTIFIC NOTATION
Writing very large and very small numbers can be done with the use of scientific notation. Scientific
notation is referred to as “exponential notation,” based on the power of 10, where the positive number can
be written or expressed as:
N x 10 n where: N = real number greater than 1 but less than 10
n = integral exponent of 10

II. Examples

A. Directions: Express 74 201 000 in scientific notation.

STEPS EXAMPLE
1. Place the decimal point after the first nonzero digit. 74 201 000 ─ 7.4201000
2. Determine the number of places the decimal point was moved to 107
the left in step 1. This is the “n”, integral exponent of 10.
3. Express the numbers in step 1 and 2 as a product. 7.4201 x 107
B. Directions: Express 0.000045 in scientific notation.
STEPS EXAMPLE
1. Place the decimal point after the first nonzero digit. 0.000045 ─ 4.5
2. Determine the number of places the decimal point was moved to 10-5
the right in step 1. This is the “n”, integral exponent of 10. The
exponent is negative.
3. Express the numbers in step 1 and 2 as a product. 4.5 x 10-5

III. Activity

A. Directions: Express the following in scientific notation or decimal notation.

a. 0.000 000 912 c. 2.23 x 10-6 e. 4 507 000 000
b. 523 300 000 d. 2.1 x 107
B. Directions: Write each number without exponents.
a. 7.5 x 105 c. 5.677 x 101 e. -6.21 x 100
6 9
b. 8.8 x 10 d. 8.766 x 10
