Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics

4 A’s Approach

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, 80% of the Grade V pupils should be able to:

● Cognitive: Identify the different kinds of polygons;

● Affective: Actively participates in searching and taking pictures of polygons around the
room; and
● Psychomotor: Precisely give the number sides and angles of a given polygon.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Identifying Polygons

Greetings

Good morning class! Good morning Ma’am!, Good

morning classmates!

Okay, you may now take your seat.

Attendance

When I call your name please raise your hand. The present students will raise their
hand when they hear their name.

Review

So last meeting we tackled about

Measurement.

Let’s have some review about Measurement

before we start our new lesson.
Can you tell me what is Measurement, Joanna. The action of measuring something.

Very good!

Can you give me example of how you measure Size of shorts ma’am.
things, Gladies.

Very good!

What else Rhoma? Length of a stick ma’am.

Very good!

Measurement is the process of assigning

numbers to events based on an established set
of rules. The purposes of measurement can be
categorized as measurement being in the
service of quality, monitoring, safety, making
something fit (design, assembly), and problem
solving.

So, now we will proceed to our next lesson. Yes Ma’am

Are you ready?

A. Motivation

given 3 minutes to answer the activity).

Let’s give them a five claf.

activity? Are you ready to learn?

A. Activity

Now class, let us have an activity. I will group

you into four. I will flash to you some shapes with
a different number of sides. You need to guess
the name of the shapes according to its
number of sides. Write your answer on board
and raise it. The first group who raise their
answer first will be having a points.

B. Analysis

a. Unlocking of Difficulties

The activity we did earlier is related to the topic

we will discuss this morning.

Do you know what polygon is? Yes ma’am

What do you mean when we say polygon? It has sides and different types.

Very good!

Okay class , I have here pictures of polygon.

Polygon A and polygon B.

How many sides are there in polygon with 5 Polygon A has 5 sides.
sides?

What do you call to a polygon with 5 sides? Pentagon ma’am.

Now, how many sides are there in polygon B?
Polygon B has 5 sides.

If these two polygons are having the same The two polygons are having the
number of sides, then what characteristics are same of sides but they are different
they differ from each other? from each other because polygon A
is a regular polygon and polygon B is
irregular polygon.

b. Discussion Proper

Now, let me introduce to you the different types Polygon is a closed plane figure
of polygons. Would someone read this definition made up of three or more line
of polygon for me? segments joined at their endpoints.

Thanks. Do you know that polygons are named

according to the number of its sides?

Okay! Now, let's take a look at the figures with Triangle

group 1 came up with. (While pointing at the
triangle, the teacher will ask the students.) What A triangle has three sides. It has
shape is this? Can anyone tell me what makes three angles. "tri" which means "3"
a triangle different from other shapes? (The teacher will write these
properties below the shape on the
Nice answers! board.)

In addition to your answers, triangle has a prefix

"tri" which means "3" Let's proceed with the next Quadrilateral
polygon. (While pointing at the quadrilateral, A quadrilateral has four sides. It has
the teacher will ask the students.) What polygon four angles. “quad” means “four”,
is this? What can you tell me about it? (Write these properties below the
shape on the board.)
Continue by explaining that "quad means four"
Then, write quad means four below the
quadrilateral.

Let's proceed with the next polygon. (While

pointing at the pentagon, the teacher will ask
the students.) What polygon is this? What can it Pentagon
has five angles. you tell me about it? A pentagon has 5 sides.

What is the prefix of pentagon? What does "pent" means "5"

"pent" means?
(Write these properties below the
shape on the board.)

Continue for hexagon, heptagon, octagon, (Students will continue to identify the
nonagon, and decagon. (Students should be number of sides and angle for each
able to identify the number of sides and polygon. They will also be thinking
possibly angles for each polygon.) ahead and already have the prefix
for hexagon, heptagon, octagon,
nonagon, and decagon.)

That's good class. I know that you'll find it easy

to name of identify the different types of
polygons. Now, can somebody give me the
answer? What do you call to a polygon having Regular Polygons.
equal sides and equal angles?

Very good!

c. Fixing Skills Activities

You got it! Now, let’s have a short activity.

Using a ruler, draw the following regular

polygons inside each box.

1. A regular polygon with 3 sides 1. A regular polygon with 3 sides

2. A regular polygon with 4 sides 2. A regular polygon with 4 sides

3. A regular polygon with 6 sides 3. A regular polygon with 6 sides

4. A regular polygon with 10 sides 4. A regular polygon with 10 sides

C. Abstraction

Now, Class, let's remember that polygons are

closed plane figure made up of three or more
line segments joined at their endpoints and it is
named according to the number of its sides.

Can you again tell me the different types of

polygons?

Yes Nicole?

Good job Nicole!

D. Application (Sample of Polygon Hunt sheet)

Group Activity: "Polygon Hunt"

Organize students in group of two. Take them as

a group as they explore the room for polygons.
Let them take a cellphone. Instruct students to
take pictures of polygons they find and record
their information on a polygon hunt sheet.
Once each pair has found ten polygons, they
present their findings to the class.

I have here an evaluation, I test each and

everyone of you if you really understand our
topic. Read the instruction carefully, okay?

IV. Evaluation
The sum of the measures of the angle of the triangle is 180. Count the number of triangles that can be
formed without overlapping in each polygon. Compute for the sum of the measures of the angles of
polygon.

V. Assignment
On a short bond paper, make an art depicting the different polygons seen in real life.

Are you done copying your assignment class? Yes Ma’am

Keep all your things in your bag!

Who will lead the prayer?

Okay Joanna lead the prayer.. Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name; thy
kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give
us this day our daily bread, and
forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass
against us, and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from
evil.

Amen.
Amen.

Goodbye class! Goodbye Ma’am!

Goodbye classmates, see you
tomorrow!
