Complete sets of numbers

1. Set of whole numbers- It is noted as “W”. The set of numbers that are used to count or to tally
objects in a set. We can also define the set of whole numbers as being the set of cardinals of
finite sets.
2. Set of integers- It is noted as “Z”. The set of positive and negative numbers whose absolute
value is a whole number.
3. Set of decimal numbers-It is noted as “D”.
4. Set of rational numbers- It is denoted as “Q”. The set of numbers obtained from the quotient of
a and b where a and b are integers and b is not equal to 0.
5. Set of irrational numbers- The symbol Q′ represents the set of irrational numbers and is read as
“Q prime”.The symbol Q represents the set of rational numbers. Real number that cannot be
written in the form of the ratio ab where a and b are integers and b ≠ 0
6. Set of real numbers-The set of rational numbers is denoted by the symbol “R”. Set of numbers
whose decimal notation is an infinite decimal sequence that may or may not be periodic.
7. Set of algebraic numbers- Complex number that is the root of a non-zero polynomial with
rational coefficients. Numbers such as π, sin(1), e, 2sin(3) are not algebraic numbers. They are
called transcendental numbers.
8. Set of complex numbers-In this kind of notation, the number a is called the real part and the
number b is called the imaginary part of the complex number. The set of real numbers is a
subset of the set of complex numbers. The set of imaginary numbers is a subset of the set of

complex numbers.

Real Numbers All numbers on number line The type of number we normally
use, such as 1, 15.82, −0.1, 3/4,
etc. Positive or negative, large or
small, whole numbers or decimal
numbers are all Real Numbers.

Place value is how much each digit is worth, based on what place it has in a number. You can
find a digit's place value by multiplying it times its place. It is the basis of our entire number
system. A place value system is one in which the position of a digit in a number determines its
value. A place-value chart is a way to make sure digits are in the correct places.
