Unit 3
Introducing the Cartesian
plane

Prior knowledge of learners

In depth knowledge of number lines.
In depth knowledge of integers including positive and negative numbers and misconceptions of
decimals to negatives.

Lesson objective/s
By the end of this lesson sequence , students should be able to:
· Identify the x axis and y axis on a grid
· Explain that the X axis runs vertically and the y axis runs horizontally
· Recognise number lines can be found on both axes
· Explain that ordered pairs consist of an x axis and a y axis
· Explain and identify that coordinates are ordering in a specific sequence to prevent
confusion
· Identify the four quadrants of the Cartesian Plane

Measurement and Geometry

Location and Transformation

Introduce the Cartesian coordinate system using all four quadrants (ACMMG143)

Evidence of learning

Lesson based evidence of learning shown through checks of understanding :

• In class questioning
• Non verbal observations
• Workbook, Interactive whiteboard student participation and completed work sheet samples

Overall Evidence of learning shown through :

• Completion and Evaluation of Summative Assessment

Classroom Management Strategies

Following the prepared Classroom Management Plan

Set out clear expectations at the beginning of the lesson.
Highlight the importance of Rocky The Wombats three rules of : Respect, Responsibility and
Safety
Monitor non-verbal feedback from all students
Redirection, wait and scan and hands up to answer questions
Use of cool down desk if needed
Students to work in predetermined seating arrangement
Use of reward system (Gotchas) for positive behaviour and work

Set out clear expectations at the beginning of the lesson

Highlight the importance of Rocky The Wombats three rules of :
Respect, Responsibility and Safety
Have students working at their desks
Engage with the Gradual Release Of Responsibility Framework : I do, We do, You do.

Lesson Set out clear expectations of lesson :

Introduction • Hands up when asking question / no shouting out
· Introducing the • Respectful behaviour
topic • Respectful of others answers and opinions
· Engagement of • Students are responsible for own actions
the learners • School is a safe place for all learners

Introduce the new unit - The Cartesian plane “ consisting of two intersecting
lines that create a quadrant grid. These two intersecting lines are called the
x axis and the y axis. The x and y axes intersect at point zero or the point of
origin, which allows us to graph positive and / or negative numbers. In order
to graph a number an order pair needs to be referenced, this ordered pair is
reference to as the coordinate”.

- Engage in conversation with focus placed on key terms : Cartesian plane,

orders pair, positive number, negative number, number lines, x axis, y
axis, horizontal, vertical, quadrant, roman numerals.
- Students rule up books following expectations of book work : margin, date,
heading, use of ruler and pencil, neat writing.
- Students notate definitions and / or symbols for key terms : Cartesian
plane, orders pair, positive number, negative number, number lines, x axis,
y axis, horizontal, vertical, quadrant, roman numerals.
Lesson Body Introduce illustration of the Cartesian plane on the interactive whiteboard
· Delivering the
content through Students and teachers work collectively as “We Do” to identify and label
specific strategies features and key terms on the illustration: x axis, y axis, point of origin,
positive numbers, negative numbers, integers

Hand out first Cartesian plane grid (have student hand out while instructions
are given)
Have students highlight the x axis in a specific colour (Yellow)
Have students highlight the y axis in a specific colour (Green)
Have students highlight positive numbers in a specific colour (Blue)
Have students highlight negative numbers in a specific colour (Pink)
Have students cut out and glue into books this first grid under the definitions

Hand out second Cartesian plane grid (have student hand out while
instructions are given)
Have students label Quadrant I
Have students label Quadrant II
Have students table Quadrant III
Have students label Quadrant IV
Have students cut out and glue into books this second grid next to or
underneath the first grid

Hand out third Cartesian plane grid (have student hand out while instructions
are given)
Introduce order pairs. Teacher demonstrates as an “I do” demonstration the
order of pairs and co-ordinates on the interactive whiteboard Cartesian
plane grid.
Beginning in Quadrant I discuss the order pair x axis and y axis are both
positive coordinates. Plot coordinates in Quadrant I as a “We do” activity first
on the interactive whiteboard and then individually on students grid 3. Check
for understanding

Move on to Quadrant II discuss the order pair x axis and y axis consist of a
positive and negative coordinate. Plot coordinates in Quadrant II as a “We
do” activity first on the interactive whiteboard and then individually for on
students grid 3 “I do”. Check for understanding

Move on to Quadrant III discuss the order pair x axis and y axis consist of
both negative coordinates. Plot coordinates in Quadrant III as a “We do”
activity first on the interactive whiteboard and then individually for students
on grid 3 “I do”. Check for understanding

Move on to Quadrant IV discuss the order pair x axis and y axis consist of a
positive and negative coordinate. Plot coordinates in Quadrant IV as a “We
do” activity first on the interactive whiteboard and then individually for
students on grid 3 “I do”. Check for understanding
Have students cut out and glue into books this third grid next to or
underneath the second grid

Hand out forth Cartesian plane grid (have student hand out while
instructions are given)
State the objective :
Students are to plot 5 markers within the Cartesian plane. Each quadrant
must contain at least one mark. Once these marks are placed the
coordinates must be transcribed with correct order of pairs. Lastly marks are
to be connected to form a 5 sided, 2d shape.
Have students cut out and glue into books this forth grid next to or
underneath the third grid

Extension students :
Maths Plus worksheet (page 119). Students to complete questions as an “I
do” activity.
