CLEANING – MDO

Cleaning operations:

For the MDO, two different kinds of cleaning operations are required: the cleaning of the upper
rolls and the cleaning of the lower rolls. To clean the upper rolls, the operators must be located
on the MDO platform and the hands control device is plugged on the platform, only the upper
rolls will run. To clean the lower rolls, the operators must be located in the pit and the hands
control device is plugged in the pit, only the lower rolls will run.

General conditions for the cleaning:

 Two operators are necessary. They must wear the correct IPE for this area (suitable working
clothes (with tight sleeves), gloves, hard hat. Face protection is strongly recommended).
 MDO is stopped.
 Surrounding machines are stopped.
 Except the operators in charge of the cleaning, nobody else is allowed to work on the MDO.
 MDO is in “cleaning mode” if operators ask the cleaning mode on the locking door device,
and the temperature of the rolls is acceptable.
 The cleaning operations of the MDO are led with the hands control device: the device must
be plugged and activated.
 Never climb on the machine for a cleaning purpose.

1) Once the MDO is stopped.

2) Put the MDO in “cleaning mode” by pushing the locking door device button and then open
the access door.
3) Keep the door open.
4) Get inside the safety area.
5) Once this procedure is OK, you can go into the pit or on the platform to clean the machine.

Instructions to clean the upper rolls of the MDO:

1) Climb the stairs to reach the platform.

2) Once located onto the platform, plug the hands control device into the cleaning plug.
3) Open one sliding panel in order to clear some rolls (several sliding panels are installed.
each panel will allow you to reach the rolls under it).
4) Lay down in order to reach the cleared face of the upper rolls (see following drawing).

One sliding panel opened The operator cleans the MDO upper rolls from a safe position (MDO
for upper rolls cleaning standstill + cooled down + IPE)

5) Take a clean rag or a swab and some appropriate cleaning products (denaturized alcohol,
polish,…), clean the rolls by rubbing the cleared face of the ones that you can reach. Use
the hands control device to rotate the rolls.
BEFORE ACTIVATING THE HANDS CONTROL DEVICE MAKE SURE THAT NOBODY
STANDS NEAR THE MDO. IN CASE OF SOMEBODY STAYS IN MDO SAFETY AREA,
THE ACTION ON THE INSIDE HANDLE LOCKING DEVICE WILL IMMEDIATELY STOP
THE MDO, INDEPENDENTLY OF THE PRESENT MDO MODE.
6) Once the accessible rolls of the machine are clean, close the sliding panel and open the
next one.
7) Repeat the same operations to clean the rolls accessible from the second sliding panel.
8) Repeat all the procedure until all upper rolls are cleaned.
9) When the cleaning is done, take the hands control device with you and have a look on the
MDO safety area to be sure nobody is there before closing the door.
10) Close the door and deactivate the cleaning mode to be able to re-start the MDO in normal
conditions.
