‘Have to’ for Obligation

I. Watch the following video to understand the use of ‘have to’.

I watched the video to do the exercise below. (X)
We use ‘have to’ to talk about things that we need to do or that we infer someone or
something must have done those things.
Examples:
I have to see a doctor this week.
You have to talk to the teacher tomorrow.
We have to take Mike to the hospital. He is feeling bad!
They have to supervise the project. They have to make sure
workers finish it this week.
Examples:
She has to make sure the children are tucked in before she
goes to bed.
He has to go to bed early because he has to work tomorrow.
The door is scratched! It has to be our cat. He has that habit.
Notice that the pronouns I, you, we, and they use ‘have to’ and the pronouns he, she and
it use ‘has to’. See the formula below.

Also notice the negative forms. I, you, we, they don’t have to, and he, she and it doesn’t
have to.
I. Read the sentences below and fill in the blanks with have to, has to, don’t have to or
doesn’t have to. See the example below.

1. Lisa is in a hurry because she has to prepare
breakfast for her children.
2. Tom and Katy have to help their children do their
homework! Their homework is difficult and the
children can’t do it by themselves.
3. Me, as a mother, have to supervise the children
when they surf the web. I have to make sure they don’t
see any malicious sites.
4. I usually work 40 hours a week, but this week I worked 10 hours from Monday thru
Thursday. That means I don´t have to go to work on Friday.
5. Mom and dad have to go to the doctor today. They both have a
terrible cold, and they are going to get tested for Covid-19.
6. Liz doesn´t have to sleep on the sofa after the party. We have a
guest room at the back of our house.
7. He has to study hard for the calculus test tomorrow. The exam
is going to be 3 hours long!
8. These days I have to eat healthy because I go to run every
afternoon for an hour and a half.
9. You don't have to worry about the test tomorrow. It is going to be easy.
10. Robert wants to be a Marine, so he has to take a lot of physical training every day.
11. Mom: What do you have to do before you eat?
b. Child: I have to wash my hands, mom.
Mom: And what do you have to do after you eat?
Child: I have to wash my teeth, mom.
Mom: You’re right, son!
