MENTAL HEALTH
What Is Mental Health?
Mental health refers to the state of our emotional, psychological and social well-being. A simple way to think about it is like this: Our mental
health affects how we feel and think, as well as how we act in certain situations.
Why Does Our Mental Health Matter?

Some early warning signs you might be struggling, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), are:
Eating too much or too little
Sleeping too much or too little
Lacking energy
Mood swings
Fighting with loved ones
Feeling confused, forgetful, on edge, angry or upset

Common Mental Health Conditions

Anxiety - It’s normal to feel a twinge of nervousness or anxiety every so often. After all, some anxiety is a necessary part of life—thousands of
years ago, our ancestors needed anxiety as a way to detect threats. If you’re nervous before giving a presentation at work or zip lining for the
first time, you’re likely experiencing a normal, healthy dose of anxiety. If your anxiety is present and all consuming, however, it could be
problematic.
Depression - As humans, the range of emotions we feel runs the gamut. Depending on what’s going on in our lives, we might feel excited and
joyful one day but sad or angry the next. Emotions like sadness, anger and fear are a normal part of human life. But when these emotions
become intense and persistent, they can be a sign of clinical depression or another depressive disorder.

Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was a nurse who saved many lives in the 19th century. She was named after the city of Florence in Italy, where her
parents went after they got married in 1818. Her family was rich and they had two homes in Britain as well as servants. Florence was an
unusual young woman for her time because she didn’t want to go to parties and get married. She wanted to be a nurse and help people. Her
family didn’t want her to become a nurse because hospitals back then were dirty, horrible places. They were worried about her. In 1851,
Florence went to Germany and learned all about nursing. It was hard work, but she loved it. In 1854, lots of British soldiers went to fight in
the Crimean War. Army hospitals were filled with injured men, but there were no nurses and many men died. Florence and a team of nurses
ex.2 Match words and pictures went to help. Florence worked 20 hours a day to make the army hospital a cleaner and safer place. She brought the men fresh food, she
cleaned the hospital beds and she used clean bandages on the wounded soldiers. Soon, fewer men were dying. At night, Florence walked
around the hospital. She talked to the injured soldiers and helped the men to write letters to their families. She carried a lamp and the
soldiers called her ‘The lady with the lamp’. When Florence returned to England, people called her a heroine because of her amazing work in
the Crimean War. Queen Victoria wrote her a letter to say thank you. She continued to work hard in Britain to improve hospitals and she was
given a medal called the Order of Merit. She was the first woman to receive this honour.
7 Healthy Habits For Teens To Follow

1. Establish healthy eating routines

It means:
Have your breakfast every day.
Have your meals and snacks on time.
Have your meals on table along with your family, rather than gulping down food in front of TV.
Give yourself enough time to have your meals and avoid eating in a hurry.

2. Establish a good sleeping routine

Following a good sleeping routine will help your teen stay fresh and fit. Encourage your teen to follow a bedtime routine in their daily schedule that helps them relax due to:
Eating healthy and light before going to bed
Having a warm bath
AD
Reading
Listening to pleasant, relaxing music
Going to bed at or nearly the same time every day
Make sure you turn off the computer, television, video games, and movies at least 30 minutes before retiring to bed.

3.Practice yoga and meditation

Practicing yoga exercises and meditation techniques daily can help your teen stay active and lead a fit and disciplined lifestyle. Yoga poses and meditation enhance the physical as well as the
psychological health of the teens and help them handle stress better than usual

4. Don’t Over-Exert Yourself

With the growing competition these days, students are required to keep themselves ahead of others.
