I. PROBLEM:

A multiple disc clutch consisting of 3 disks on the driving shaft and 2 disks on the driven
shaft is to transmit 67.5 kW at a speed of 1500 rpm allowing for 25% overload. Assume
uniform wear where the average allowable pressure is 0.2 N/mm2 and the coefficient of
friction for the surfaces is taken as 0.15. The outside diameter of thesurfaces is to be
1.5 times the inside diameter. The axial thrust is to be provided 9 springs with 4 active
turns and is of spring index = 6. For the spring material the safe shear stress is to be
limited to 420 MPa and the modulus of rigidity may be taken as 80 kN/mm2.

A. Determine the Outside and inside radii of the discs.

B. Determine the Axial force on the clutch

C. Determine the Spring dimensions

D. Determine the shaft diameter if the shear stress for the shaft material in 50 N/mm2

II. GIVEN:
• Number of outer discs, n₁ = 3 • Diameter ratios, d1/d2 = 1.5
• Number of inner discs, n₂ = 2 • Spring index, C = 6
• Coefficient of friction of discs, µ • Overload = 25%
= 0.15 • Ave. allowable pressure, Pₐᵥ
• Number of turns, n = 4 = 0.2 N/mm2
• Modulus of rigidity, G = 80 GPa • Number of springs = 9
• Power transmitted, P = 67.5 kW • Shear stress, T = 420 MPa
= 67.5 x 103 W
• Rotational speed, N = 1500 rpm
III. DESIGNER’S DETAILED SOLUTION

Note: r1 and r2 are not actual, these values are to be used in finding Pmax.
SOLVING FOR THE ACTUAL INSIDE AND OUTSIDE RADII OF THE DISKS. USE THE
TRANSMITTED TORQUE EQUATION IN FINDING THE ACTUAL INSIDE AND
OUTSIDE RADII OF THE DISKS.
Solving for the actual force on the clutch
FIND THE PARAMETERS SUCH AS WAHL’S FACTOR, MAXIMUM LOAD PER SPRING,
SPRING DIAMETERS, SPRING COMPRESSION, TOTAL NUMBER OF TURNS OF THE
SPRING, AND FREE LENGTH OF THE SPRING
FINDING THE SHAFT2 DIAMETER WITH SHEAR STRESS OF THE MATERIAL IS
EQUAL TO 50 N/MM
IV. TABLES USED DURING THE SOLVING PHASE
V. FINAL DIMENSIONS TO BE USED IN THE DESIGN OF CLUTCHES

FOR THE DISCS FOR THE SPRINGS FOR THE SHAFT

Outer Radius, r1 = 145.4585mm Diameter, d = 6.401mm Diameter, ds = 38mm
Inner Radius, r2 = 96.9723mm Mean Diameter, D = 38.406mm Length, L = 150mm
Total turns, n’ = 6

Free length, L = 51.145mm

Coil Pitch, P = 10.229mm
