Setting the Rotation of the DMD, Generation 4

06-09-11 Rev. 0

Objective

If the rotation of the DMD is set correctly, the individual mini-pictures are aligned parallel to each
other in the "Step & Repeat" mode, which is imperative for the exposure quality of the UV-Setter (in
the "Scrolling" mode). The present Work Instruction describes how to check and set the rotation of
your DMD.

Scope of Application

All UV-Setters of Generation 4

Description

1. General Information
The DMD mounting in the exposure head is rotationally symmetrical. The DMD can therefore be
installed in any chosen position. The operational reliability of the UV-Setter, however, requires the
short side of the DMD to be aligned parallel to the Y direction of the axis system. This setting must
be made whenever the screws fixing the formatter board in the exposure head have been loos-
ened. The following sections describe how to check and correct the rotation of the DMD.

1.1 Tools required

• Digital indicating caliper (PGx no.: 600000134)
• Indicating caliper holder (PGx no.: 511990016A)
• 2.5 mm Allen key
• 3.0 mm Allen key
• Small flat-blade screwdriver
• Shaft screw for diaphragm slider D3-M4 (PGx no.: 510990007)
• One of the following files, depending on the resolution of your UV-Setter:
• "Turning_DMD_900.tbb"
• "Turning_DMD_1270.tbb"
• "Turning_DMD_1500.tbb" (in the following referred to "Rotation chart")
• Printing plates cut to the particular job size ("Turning_DMD….tbb")

2. Sequence of Work
2.1 Checking the rotation of the DMD

Adjustment of the rotation of the DMD XGA will be described in the following using the
example of a UV-Setter with a resolution of 1,500 dpi.

Carry out the following steps:

Step 1
• Drag the relevant rotation chart to the "Exposure" window of the UV-Setter software using drag
& drop.
• Lay a printing plate onto the vacuum punched hole plate.
• Perform the exposure separately for each individual head
("UV-Setter" Æ "Use first head only" or "Use second head only").
• Expose the file (to do so, click on the button for starting exposure).

Step 2
The illustration below shows the exposed rotation chart "Turning_DMD_1500.tbb" as an example:

Fig. 1

The correct correction value is determined as follows:

1 Locate the mini-picture areas which have been exposed with the same brightness and form a
homogenous area (there may also be several).
2 The correct value is to be found in the row in which the mini-picture areas form a line on the
left (mini-picture areas line up exactly to each other).
3 These lines do not contain the correct correction value.

Correction value 76 is correct in this example. Make a note of this value on the printing plate. Re-
peat Step 1 and Step 2 for the second exposure head (where installed).

If the correction value you have determined is 0 ± 1, the rotation of the DMD
need not be corrected.

2.2 Opening the housing

Step 3
• Remove the lower bottom screw (M4 - 3 mm Allen key).
• Use the D3-M4 shaft screw to shift the diaphragm slide back carefully,
and tighten the shaft screw finger-tight. Now, no UV light can escape.

Step 4
Loosen the lower and the upper cover from the right side of the exposure head –
(8 x M4 - 3 mm Allen key).

Upper cover (4 x M4)

right screws!

2.3 Correcting the rotation

Step 5
• Fix the indicating holder (M4 - 3 mm Allen key).
• Mount the indicating caliper and align the measuring pin such that it is just before the housing
edge of the formatter board (see also Fig. 4).
• Set the indicating caliper to zero.

Step 6
• Loosen the screws of the formatter board - 3x M3 x 20 (2.5 mm Allen key).

Only loosen the screws sufficiently for the formatter board to be rotated slightly. It
is recommended to retighten the screws lightly after loosening.

Step 7
Loosen the locking screw slightly - standard flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 8
To determine the correction of the rotation exactly, observe the following:
• the position of the measuring pin and thus the perpendicular distance to the center of the
DMD (see Fig. 7)

Factor 6.15 5.21 3.69

Use the following formula for calculation:

Correction value × factor = correction

Inserted into the formula above, this would mean for our example:
76μm × 6.15 = 467 μm

A positive result means CW rotation,

and a negative result CCW rotation.

Thus, in our example, the DMD must be turned clockwise until the indicating caliper displays
467 µm.

It is sufficient to set the correction with an accuracy of ± 1 µm.

Repeat Step 5 to Step 7 in the reverse order to refix the formatter board.

Repeat Step 3 to Step 8 for the second exposure head (where installed).

Step 9
Close the housing (see Section "Opening the housing" in the reverse order). Check the set rotation
by repeating the steps of Section "Checking the rotation of the DMD" on page 1. If the correction
value you have determined is 0 ± 1, the rotation is set correctly. Carry out the steps described in
Section "Opening the housing" in the reverse order to reinstall the housing.

If the rotation is not yet set correctly, proceed with Step 5 (see "Correcting the rotation" on page 5).
