Automatic Alarm Handling in Hydro Power Plants

ALARM HANDLING IN HYDRO ELECTRIC POWER PLANTS

The Irish Electricity Supply Board (ESB) employs over 7000 people and is the SOLUTION FEATURES

of electrical power to 1.8 million customers. The organization maintains a mixed

“We can talk to each other and receive critical alarm texts from any location  Engineers receive technical alarm

THE SOLUTION
A MOTOTRBO IP Site Connect system links the Cathleen Falls Hydro-electric Power Plant in
Ballyshannon Donegal to its neighbouring Clady Power Plant. MOTOTRBO radios can instantly
communicate between both plants. The MOTOTRBO repeater at Cathleen Falls connects directly with
ESB’s PBX using a Teldio Radio Branch Exchange (RBX).
This enabled ESB to discontinue the use of their mobile handhelds by shifting telephone and messaging
capabilities to their radio network without paying recurring fees. Staff without radios can now use any
phone to initiate a private call with an individual radio or dial into radio talkgroups to participate instantly in
daily routines or urgent tasks. This also provides radio users the freedom to roam anywhere within the
radio network and to continue to initiate phone calls just as they once did with their mobiles telephones.
The ZONITH ACS monitors and interprets technical and business critical alarms from a Honeywell Building
Management System monitoring both Power Plants. If an alarm is raised at either site the ZONITH ACS
immediately dispatches the alarm details in text format to the radio of the ESB representative responsible
for alarm handling.
In addition, the ZONITH ACS is configured to monitor safety and emergency alarms that are initiated from
an existing ASCOM Lone Worker and Man Down paging system. The system triggers an alarm if a user at
either site manually activates an alarm, fails to move over a period of time, or falls down. All alarms are
immediately dispatched by ZONITH ACS directly to the security staff at either site depending on their
competencies.
