RESEARCH ACTIVITY 1

1. Select a specific type of structure (e.g. highrise building, roads, ports, manufacturing

plants, railways, bridges, dams, airports, tunnels etc. Note: Please select a complex

structure, or a structure that can be built in actual without a civil engineer so do not include

residential houses)

2. Provide the following for the structure you have selected.

a) Definition and purpose of the structure

b) Parts of the structure

c) Civil Engineering phases involved to put up the structure and briefly discuss (in 3-

5 sentences on how they are vital to the structure (e.g. of phase are Structural

Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering)

3. Make a brief research on their basic statistics.

a) How many existing structures have been built in the Philippines?

b) Who are the usual contractors of these type of projects?

c) How much does this type of project cost? Input the range, and input the maximum

and minimum contract amount

d) Research more about structuring the project type you have chosen

4. Site out at least 30 risks that this type of project encounters. Detailed risks or turbulence

are much better (e.g. For Port – Difference of elevation in hydrographical and

topographical survey versus actual during actual construction)

2

• Note, problems in projects does not need to come only from construction phase,

you can also spot during the planning and implementation, and stakeholder

acquisition phase

• You may find more problems if you will have a general idea of the specific activities

being done to implement the structure you have selected.

• Or simply ‘google’ if there are researches or studies done with regards to civil

engineering structure you selected.

*** Please don’t forget to site out all your references. Follow this format, and please don’t use too

much link references. It’s better if it will be a study, a journal, a book or paper.
