Intended learning Outcomes:
1. Determine the force that make the system of forces at
equilibrium.
2. Apply the concept of moment to determine the mass of the
object.

Problems:
How to use Physics Interactive – Forces at
Equilibrium and its features

•Access the virtual laboratory by clicking the "Physics

Interactive – Forces at Equilibrium"

• Note: If the simulation take too long to respond, click the alternative link.
•After you click the start button, many features will
appear on your screen.

•Reset - The reset

button will allow you
to get back from the
start.

•Balance Beam/
Fulcrum– It is used
to measure the mass
of an object under
gravitation. It
consists of
horizontal beam,
supported at its
center. The beam
can move freely
about its support
and is labeled with
10cm interval based
on how far you
placed the object.

•Weight Metal – These will be use to •Take Quiz – This button will allow
balance the beam and to identify the you to enter to take new different
mass of other objects. The weight metal challenges where you need solve the
has five different masses: 1 kg, 2 kg, 3 kg, mass of the goblin, zombie farmer,
4 kg and an unknown mass of the blue and robot using the metal weights
weight which we will obtain later after and the balance beam for you to get
doing the experiment. the 3 stars.
PART 1
• A 2-kg mass placed 30-cm to the left of the fulcrum is
PROBLEM 1 balanced by a 3-kg mass placed ______ cm to the right of the
fulcrum.

•First, we need to
drag the 2-kg
mass and place it
30cm to the left
from the center
and we need to
determine where
we can place the
3-kg mass to
balance the
fulcrum.

COMPUTATION
•And now as we
can see the
fulcrum is now
balance by
placing 3kg
weight metal in
20cm.

PROBLEM 2 Show the locations where the listed masses must be

placed to achieve balance

A. •We are free to place the given weights where 1-kg

and 2-kg and must place from the left and 4-kg from
the right. We put first the 1 and 2 kg from the left and
we need to determine where we can place the 4-kg
to balance the fulcrum and to check by performing it
in the lab if they are really balance.
COMPUTATION

here if you need it

•And now as we
can see the
fulcrum is now
balance by
placing 1 kg
weight metal in
-40cm and 2 kg
weight metal in
-20cm while 4kg
in 20cm
PROBLEM 2

B.

•We are free to place the

given weights where 1-kg
and 2-kg and must place
from the left and 4-kg
from the right. We put
first the 1 and 2 kg from
the left and we need to
determine where we can
place the 4-kg to balance
the fulcrum and to check
by performing it in the lab
if they are really balance.

COMPUTATION
•And now as we
can see the
fulcrum is now
balance by
placing 1 kg
weight metal in
-20cm and 2 kg
weight metal in
-50cm while 3 kg
weight metal in
40cm

PROBLEM 3 Show where the unplaced masses could be placed in

order to achieve balance

A.
•We are having the given of 2-kg and is placed in the left of the fulcrum 30cm
away from the center. We need to place two 3-kg weight metals in order to
balance the fulcrum.
•First, we assumed that the first 3-kg is placed in the left side with 20cm away
from the center

For us to be able to balance the fulcrum, we need to know where we

should put the other 3-kg.
COMPUTATION

•And now as we
can see the
fulcrum is now
balance by
placing the last 3
kg weight metal in
40cm
PROBLEM 3

B.

•We are having the

given of 4-kg and is
placed in the left of
the fulcrum 50cm
away from the
center. We need to
place 1-kg and 3-kg
weight metals in
order to balance the
fulcrum.

•First, we assumed
that the 3-kg is in the
right side with 60cm
away from the center

For us to be able to balance the fulcrum, we need to know where we

should put the other 1-kg.
COMPUTATION

•And now as we
can see the
fulcrum is now
balance by
placing the last 1
kg weight metal in
20cm
•Determine the amount of mass possessed by the
PROBLEM 4 blue mass. Show your data and explain your
reasoning or show the math

•First, we are free to

decide where we are
going to put the
blue mass. We
decided to put it in
the left 40cm away
from the center.

• After many trials in balancing the fulcrum using the different weight
metals, we are able to balance the fulcrum. Using the given that we obtained
from the experiment, we can now solve the unknown mass of the blue mass
COMPUTATION

Determine the mass of the following:

1. Mass of Goblin;
PART 2 2. Mass of Zombie:
3. Mass of Robot:

On the simulation
click the "Take Quiz"
button.
MASS OF THE GOBLIN

•This is also similar to

the previous problems
we solved. We are free
to decide to place the
Goblin anywhere we
want and we need to
balance the fulcrum
using trial and error.

•We put the Goblin to the left 30cm away from the center. Luckily,
after we put the first metal weight which is the 4kg from the right
side 30cm away from the center for the trial and error, the fulcrum
already balanced.
COMPUTATION

•After we compute
the mass of the
goblin, we put it in
the upper left
corner by clicking
the arrow to have
4 kg and then click
to proceed to the
next
MASS OF THE ZOMBIE
FARMER

•Reset or remove all

the metal weights
from the fulcrum

•Same as in the
Goblin, we are free
to decide to place
the Zombie Farmer
anywhere we want
and we need to
balance the
fulcrum using trial
and error.

• We put the
Zombie Farmer to
the left 20cm away
from the center.
• After the trial and error, we finally balance the fulcrum.
With that we can now solve the mass of the zombie farmer
using the given that we used in the experiment.

COMPUTATION
•After we compute
the mass of the
zombie farmer, we
put it in the upper
mid corner by
clicking the arrow
to have 15 kg and
then click to
proceed to the
next

MASS OF THE ZOMBIE

FARMER

•Reset or remove
all the metal
weights from the
fulcrum
•Same as in the
previous problems,
we are free to
decide to place the
Robot anywhere
we want and we
need to balance
the fulcrum using
trial and error.
• We put the
Robot to the left
20cm away from
the center.

• We put the Robot to the left 20cm away from the center.
After the trial and error, we finally balance the fulcrum.
With that we can now solve the mass of the robot using the
given that we used in the experiment.
COMPUTATION

•After we
compute the
mass of the
robot, we put it
in the upper
right corner by
clicking the
arrow to have
22 kg and then
click to
proceed to the
next
