INTRODUCTION:
A weighing balance and scale is a measuring instrument that is used for determining the weight or
mass of an object.
A weighing balance measures mass directly by comparing the unknown mass to a known mass,
which is not affected by changes in gravity. Therefore, a balance should give the same reading 1. What weight is required to balance a weighing machine with three
regardless of its loca on. 3 kg bags on one pan.
Scales on the other hand measure weight, which refers to the force ac ng on a mass that is
equivalent to the object's mass mul plied by accelera on due to gravity.
The equal arm scale is the oldest type of scale in existence. At its most basic level, the equal
arm balance consists of two pans suspended on opposing sides of a lever.

The main parts of the weighing scale are a follows:

A beam whose centre is pivoted and rests on the fulcrum of a knife edge. Either
side of the beam is equal in length with respect to the fulcrum
A pointer is a ached to the center of the beam. pointer will point ver cally
downwards when the beam is in equilibrium. 2. Two weights of 500 g and 250 g are used on a pan while weighing a cup of
sugar placed on the other pan of the balance. If the pans balance, then what
is the weight of the bag of sugar?

In order to use it, the object being weighed must be placed on one of the pans. 3. A shopkeeper places an object on one pan and the weights 5 kg, 500 g and
Calibra on weights must then be placed on the other pan in an a empt to balance 25 g on the other pan of a balance. If the pans balance, then what is the
the two. Once the pans are perfectly balanced, the known weight will be equal to weight of the object?
the unknown object.
A scale is used to measure weight (weight = the force of gravity on an object on
the scale) whereas a balance is used to measure mass. (mass = the amount
of ma er in an object).
