MOTIVATION

Direction: This activity is titled, "Freeze, Copycat." The teacher

will show 7 pictures of different body poses. Students are
then, asked to imitate every pose, shown in the pictures. As
soon as the teacher flashes the picture on screen, the student
will imitate the picture as fast as they can, until the teacher
says the word, " Freeze!" The students will pause for 7
seconds in every pose.
Chapter 4

BALANCE
AND
STABILITY
CHAPTER 4
Lessons included Chapter 4:
LESSON 11: How is equilibrium achieved?
LESSON 12: How is the center of gravity located?
LESSON 13: How is the center of gravity related to
equilibrium ?
LESSON 14: What are the conditions for equilibrium

14.1 The First Condition for Equilibrium

14.2 The Second Condition for Equilibrium
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

Classify different types of equilibrium by citing some

1 of their examples

Perform an experiment in determining the center of

2 gravity

Reflect on the importance of gravity in sustaining life

3 on Earth
Balance- a person's ability to control their
equilibrium in relation to gravity only.

Stability- body's ability to "return to a desired

position, following a disturbance.
Equilibrium
is a state of body where neither the internal
energy nor the motion of the body changes
with respect to time.
There are two classifications of mechanical equilibrium:

Static
and
Dynamic
If the body is in equilibrium but continues to move with
uniform velocity, it is known as dynamic equilibrium.

For example, a ball moving on the floor.

If the body is in equilibrium while being at rest, it is
termed as static equilibrium.

"Static" means stationary or at rest.

How do we know if equilibrium
is

achieved?
If an object is at equilibrium, then
the forces are balanced.
What do you mean by

center of
gravity?
How is the center of gravity
related to equilibrium ?
This is to increase the support base. This is
to infer that the lower the center of gravity,
the greater the stability.
Equilibrium can also be classified as:

Stable

Unstable

Neutral
STABLE
EQUILIBRIUM
- occurs when object's center of gravity
is as the lowest possible position.

STABLE
EQUILIBRIUM
UNSTABLE
EQUILIBRIUM
- occurs when an object cannot return to
its original position.

UNSTABLE
EQUILIBRIUM
A cone lying on its side stays in its position
without tending either to move further or
to return where it was before. This is
neutral equilibrium.
To apply your knowledge, let's have a short activity.

Student will get their materials.

1. First, bring 2 forks, a glass, a toothpick and lighter/match.

2. Next, attached 2 forks together.
3. Then, stuck a toothpick between those forks.
4. Carefully place the toothpick on the rim of the glass. Try to
balance the setup on the edge of a glass or with the tip of your
finger.
5. Carefully, burn half of the stick.
6. Observe.
From our experiment, although the
toothpick is only on the edge of the glass,
still, it will remain balanced. Even if we
burn it half, the wole system will remain
constant.

And what do you think is responsible for

that phenomenon?
VI. EVALUATION

To measure if you have really learned from our discussion, let’s

have a short quiz. Choose your answer for the following
questions. Write only the letter of the correct answer.

maintain its balance after being disturbed?

A. steadiness
B. sturdiness
C. stability
D. solidity
2. It is a state of balance where neither the internal
energy nor the motion of the body changes with
respect to time.
A. stable
B. stability
C. static
D. equilibrium
3. It is a state of equilibrium where an object can be
rolled from one side to another.

A. neutral
B. stable
C. unstable
D. dynamic
4. It is where all of the weight of an object seemed
to be concentrated.

A. gravity
B. center of gravity
C. internal energy
D. external energy
5. Complete the sentence:
The lower the center of gravity, the _________.

A. the greater the stability
