Lab Task # 1

31-March-2021

List down verious types of roads in the Pakistan.Discuss their roles in

the context of functional classification.

Functional Classification:

The Highway Functional Classification System

defines the role a roadway plays in the overall road network. Each roadway is
classified in two ways. First by whether it is ‘urban’ or ‘rural’ , and second by
its function within the network. In general the two basic functions of a
roadway are access to property and travel mobility.

Mobility refers to the actual ability of the road to move traffic, while
accessibility refers to the ease of entering or exiting a roadway to or from
adjacent priorities. Arterials have high mobility but low land access and are
typically used for longer trips. Whereas, local roads have low mobility (travel
at slower speeds) but provide the highest level of land access. These are
used for shorter trips around town. Collectors are in the middle and often act
as the transitional roads from arterials to local roads.

1. Motorways in Pakistan:
Motorways of Pakistan are a network of multiple-lane,
high-speed, controlled-access highways mostly in Punjab, which are owned, maintained,
and operated federally by Pakistan's National Highway AuthorityAs of Feb 2021, 2429 km
of motorways are operational, while an additional 1312 km are under construction or
planned. All motorways in Pakistan are prefixed with the letter 'M' (for "Motorway") followed
by the unique numerical designation of the specific highway.

2. National Highways in Pakan:

National Highways of Pakistan are a network
of toll highways in Pakistan, which are owned, maintained and operated by the National
Highways Authority under the Ministry of Communications.
It maintains 13,300 kilometres (8,300 mi) of roadways organized into various
classifications which crisscross the country and provide access to major population centers.
National Highways are not to be confused with provincial highways, which are roads
maintained by the respective provinces.
Pakistan's national highways include the famous Grand Trunk Road, Indus
Highway, Karakoram Highway and Makran Coastal Highway.
All national highways in Pakistan are pre-fixed with the letter 'N' (for "national") followed
by the unique numerical designation of the specific highway (with a hyphen in the middle),
e.g. "N-5.
