PRELIMINARY ARENA MODEL
WHAT IS OUR FINAL
ARENA MODEL?
The model is a small-scale replica of the original Miami
Airport. Due to the limitations of the student version of
Arena software the model is miniaturized. Hence, a
small scale model is developed by reducing the number
of passengers and flights per month. Flight size is also
reduced to 15 passenger per flight which is almost by the
factor of 10. The new data for the model is shown below.
Primary Data for the Model
THE DATA PRIMARILY USED FOR THE FINAL SIMULATION
NOTE: This data is scaled down for a smooth running of 30 day-simulation
SIMPLIFICATION OF MAIN MODEL BY
DEVELOPING SUB-MODELS
Passenger Arrival Rate of 1 Security Check takes 5
min/passenger min/passenger due to
baggage & body checking
PASSENGER ARRIVAL
After Allocation of Gates
Idendification and Check-in
Passenger waits for the
counter Delay : 2 min each
arrival of their respective
planes

FINAL ARENA MODEL

Arrival Rate: 1 Flight/14 After successful flight arrival a

minutes signal is sent to release
passengers at their gate
Time for Gate Allocation : Once Passengers have boarded
2 minutes FLIGHT FLIGHT their flights the plane takes off
If Gate is Occupied the plane ARRIVAL DEPARTURE
Runway is assigned to plane
repeats the process based on the availability
After successful gate
Take-off Time is 1 min
allocation the security
checking takes 10 min/plane
IF SCENARIO_TEST CASE - 2: REDUCED
NUMBER OF RUNWAYS TO 1

OUTCOME
There is no significant
increase in wait time of
passengers.

REASON
In original Model
Runway 2 was used in
emergencies therefore it
was only used for
around 76 times in
whole month
IF SCENARIO_TEST CASE - 3: ICREASE THE NUMBER OF GATES

OUTCOME
1. Waiting time at the gate
is reduced.
2. Waiting time for each
plane is reduced before
the allocation of gate

EFFECT
Ability of handling
more airplane at a time
is increased.
IF SCENARIO_TEST CASE - 4: DECREASE THE NUMBER OF GATES
OUTCOME EFFECT
1. Waiting line at the gate is becoming longer 2. o 2.
1. Ability to handle more airplane at a time
Waiting time for each plane is increased before the
is reduced.
allocation of the gate
2. Waiting time for planes at terminal is
reduced.
IF SCENARIO_TEST CASE - 5: REDUCE THE SECURITY CHECKING TIME
OUTCOME
1. Length of the queue is reduced
at security check. 2. Waiting
time at Gates per passenger is
increased.
3. Waiting time of Flight at the
terminal is reduced.

EFFECT
1. Passenger queue at security
check is reduced therefore
comfort is increased
2. Waiting time for flight is
reduced so a greater number of
flights can be accommodated.
3. No major infrastructure
change is requiring to
accommodate this change.

CONCLUSION BASED ON
OBSERVATIONS

The current airport model is appropriate to handle

required amount of crowd.

If the overall time for a passenger needs to be

reduced CASE 5 can be implemented i.e. Reduce
Security Time. Which can be done without any major
changes.

If in future Number of passengers are increased or

decreased we can control that by increasing or
decreasing number of gates which will affect overall
size of airport but will not affect passanger.
