National Botanical Garden of Bangladesh

Introduction:
The National Botanic Garden of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh National Herbarium make up
the largest plant conservation center in Bangladesh, with an area of around 84 hectares (210
acres). It is located at Mirpur in Dhaka, beside the Dhaka Zoo. It was established in 1961. It is
one of the greatest botanic gardens of Bangladesh, a knowledge center for nature lovers and
botanists and a tourist destination. The herbarium has a scientific collection of approximately
100,000 preserved specimens of plants.

Maintenance:
The garden is well planned and provides learning and recreational facilities adjacent to the
Dhaka Zoo. It is divided into 57 sections, and is managed by Forest Department under Ministry
of Environment and Forests, Government of Bangladesh.

Ticket price:
20 takas

Collection of plants and trees:

Bangladesh National Herbarium's collection of plant and tree species is large. The garden houses
about 56,000 individual trees, herbs, and shrubs including a huge collection of aquatic plants.
Rare and exotic plant species in the garden include:
 Anthurium
 Camphor)
 Rabbit fern
 Dambia
 White rangan
 Little mussanda
 Victoria amazonica
Green House:
Green houses are the places
where plants are grown in
optimum temperatures. Plants at
early stages of growth and some
rare species require only certain
amount of heat. So, to protect
such types of plants green
houses are build in botanical
gardens.

Advantages of Botanical Garden:

Botanical gardens should be managed to provide a rich, overall experience that promotes
relaxation, in addition to maintaining a healthy, interesting, and diverse collection of plant
materials that enables visitors to experience new plants and enables opportunities for learning.

Disadvantages of Botanical Garden:

Energy

Botanic gardens require more energy for the electrical equipment needed, than normal house
gardens. Botanic gardens bring plants from different areas of the world together. Maintaining the
flowers at optimal health in a neutral environment will take more than simple gardening. Special
equipment is used to neutralize the soil for the different species and give the plants their required
nutrients.

Plant Knowledge

Keeping a botanic garden requires intermediate to advanced knowledge of horticulture and

plants. This garden brings together a wide variety of species, but these species cannot adapt to
the neutral environment of the botanic garden without support. Knowing what type of soil to use
for each plant, knowing which plants and flowers to plant together and how to keep the plants
healthy requires a high degree of knowledge and expertise.
Importance of Botanical Garden:

1. Taxonomic Studies:
Botanical gardens provide valuable information on various plants Local flora, bonsai, rare plants
etc. They act as “outdoor laboratories” for students and researchers.
2. Botanical Research:
Botanical gardens supply wide range of plant species, seeds, flowers, fruits for botanical
research.
3. Conservation:
Botanical gardens conserve and propagate rare species and genetic diversity.
4. Education:
They supply facilities for courses in local flora, horticulture, hybridization, plant propagation,
etc. There educational programmers include workshops, training sessions for teachers, students,
naturalists etc.
5. Public Services.
They help the public in identifying the local and exotic plant species; provide instructions for
home gardening’s, propagation of plants; supply plant resource;, through sale or exchange.
6. Aesthetics and Recreation:
They attract people who have made gardening their hobby.
ADVERTISEMENTS:
7. Employment:
They create job opportunities for a large number of young botanists.
