BARANGAY SUGCAD
DEMOGRAPHICS
The population of Sugcad grew from 929 in
1990 to 1,784 in 2015, an increase of 856
people.Sugcad is situated at approximately
13.4061,123.6545, in the island of Luzon.
Sugcad shares a common border with the
following barangays, San Bernardo Tiwi,
Tanawan, Libod, Tuliw, Bagatangki and
Matalipni Malinao Albay.

CULTURE
The people of Sugcad travelled to Tanawan
during yearly fiesta celebrations or every
time there was a festivity in the area. As
time passed by, considering the difficulty
encountered by the people in crossing the
river, the people of Sugcad decided to
separate from Tanawan and they set up a
day for their own feast day and this was set
on November 27 of every year as it is being
observed until today.

HISTORY
One day, while the Spanish soldiers were
undergoing patrol surveillance around the area,
they discovered a beautiful deep spring located
at the west portion of this community. Due to
eagerness, one of the soldiers got a bamboo
pole to determine the inner part and to measure
the deepness of the natural spring. While
putting the bamboo pole into the water, the
early inhabitants who were observing nearby
said among themselves in a very loud voice,
“PIGTUGKAD”. The soldiers heard that kind of
utterance and registered in their minds the word
“tugkad” and reported the incident to the
Spanish authority. From then on, this particular
place was called “Tugkad” until such time it was
changed “Sugcad” as we know today.
ECONOMY
Presently, Sugcad is one of the progressive
and highly populated barangays in the
municipality of Malinao. Sugcad is rich in
coconut, timber, abaca and other farm and
forest products. Sugcad is known for its
natural spring that provides potable water,
not only for its constituents, but also for the
residents of the adjacent barangays of
Tanawan, Libod and Balza. Sugcad plaza, a
top Mt. Malinao is one of the scenic spots of
this barangay wherein mountaineers and
local tourists love to visit and see.
Infrastructure projects are being developed.
The presence of elementary and secondary
schools signifies that Sugcad has a bright
future in the years to come.
 Sugcad is one of the barangay in the municipality of Malinao. It is located near at Sugcad
Plaza, it is a favourite campsite with a wide space and nearby water source. Our barangay owns a
source of water found in mountain or what we called “BUSAY FALLS”. It is clear and clean where
people can drink it. Barangay Sugcad contain its population with the average of 1,784 based from
the record of our very own secretary. Additionally, our barangay own its history and origins.

Spaniards, there was a post command assigned in this remote and little community. One day, while

that beside the deep spring, there was a very big and tall tree which they called “Bagkison”. Just
like the word ”tugkad” the word “Bagkison” was also handed down from one generation to another
and this was the reason why the sitio of Bagkison came existence up to the present. At that time,
