IAEA Specification

Densitometer
March 2020

SPECIFICATION
Densitometer for Laboratory
1. Scope
This Specification describes the requirements for a densitometer for the determination of
density in solutions, mainly heavy water (D2O) (hereinafter referred to as the “System”).

2. Applicable Documents
The following documents shall be applicable for this Specification to the extent specified
hereinafter:
ASTM standard D4052-15

3. Requirements
3.1. Functional and Performance Requirements
The System shall meet the following functional and performance requirements:
a) be robust;
b) have parts easy to maintain to avoid unplanned corrective maintenance;
c) be designed for measurement of D2O solutions at 25 C°;
d) be able to operate at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure;
e) have temperature and pressure correction for measurement;
f) operate on principle of oscillating U-tube;
g) have measurement cell(s) that are easy to fill and empty;
h) have measurement cell(s) that are easy to clean with common reagents (such as
acetone, deionized water);
i) have measurement cell(s) that are easy to calibrate with density standards;
j) produce quick results; and
k) minimize manual input.

3.2. Technical Requirements

The System shall meet the following technical requirements:
a) have a density range covering all heavy water solutions (for instance from 0 to
1.5g/cm3);
b) have an oscillating U-tube made from glass;
c) have high density accuracy (0.00001g/cm3);
d) be easy to install in the laboratory on a workbench;
e) have a maximum weight not more than 25kg;
f) have dimensions ca 400mm x 400mm x 400mm;
g) be powered by with standard 240V; and
h) operate with a small volume of sample (few mL).

4. Marking

The System shall have all safety markings in English language.

5. Packing
The System, for the shipment to the IAEA, shall be packed in accordance with international
standards that are applicable for the shipment of this kind of equipment.

6. Quality Requirements
6.1. The System shall be manufactured, shipped and installed in accordance with the
Contractor’s ISO quality assurance system or an equivalent quality assurance system.
6.2. The Contractor shall document the compliance with this quality assurance system.

7. Testing and Acceptance

The System, prior to shipment, shall be tested for conformance of the System with
manufacturer’s performance specifications and the minimum requirements specified
herein.
The System, after installation, shall be tested by the Contractor together with the IAEA to
demonstrate that the performance meets the manufacturer’s performance specifications
and the minimum requirements specified herein as determined by the IAEA.
The results of the testing of the System shall be documented by the Contractor in an
acceptance protocol that shall be signed by the IAEA.

8. Spare Parts
The Contractor shall guarantee the availability of spare parts for 10 years after the
acceptance of the product by the IAEA.

9. Installation and Training

The Contractor shall install the System at the Nuclear Material Laboratory (Seibersdorf,
Austria).

10. Deliverable Data Items

The Contractor shall provide two complete sets of operation and servicing manuals and
technical drawings in the English language.
