WHAT IS MANDALA ART?

A mandala (Sanskrit: मण्डल, romanized: maṇḍala, lit. 'circle', [ˈmɐɳɖɐlɐ])

is a geometric configuration of symbols. In various spiritual
traditions, mandalas may be employed for focusing attention of
practitioners and adepts, as a spiritual guidance tool, for establishing
a sacred space and as an aid to meditation and trance induction. In the
Eastern religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Shintoism it is
used as a map representing deities, or specially in the case of
Shintoism, paradises, kami or actual shrines. A mandala generally
represents the spiritual journey, starting from outside to the inner
core, through layers.
IN ART
Mandala as an art form first appeared in Buddhist art that were
produced in India during the first century B.C. In New Age, the
mandala is a diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents
the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a cosmic diagram
that shows the relation to the infinite and the world that extends
beyond and within various minds & bodies. These can also be
seen in Rangoli designs in Indian households.
MANDALA IN SCIENCE
Circular diagrams are often used in phylogenetics, especially
for the graphical representation of phylogenetic relationships.
Evolutionary trees often encompass numerous species that are
conveniently shown on a circular tree, with images of the
species shown on the periphery of a tree. Such diagrams have
been called phylogenetic mandalas
MATHEMATICS IN MANDALA
➤Mandalas are rich in mathematics (circle geometry, reflective and
...rotational symmetry), and provide useful practice with geometry
...tools including rulers, compasses and protractors.

➤The word ‘mandala’ means ‘circle’ in Sanskrit, It is a circular

....design exhibiting pattern and symmetry.

➤Traditionally a mandala is divided into four quadrants, similar to a

...coordinate plane.

➤Mandalas are with the same center point, this in math is called,
...Concentric Circles.

MAKING OF MANDALA
MAKING OF MANDALA
1. Using a compass, draw an 8" (or larger) circle on white paper.

2. Divide the circle in half, then in fourths with a light pencil line.

3. Draw a design using a ruler and compass in one of the four areas of the
circle. Use a minimum of four different shapes.

4. Once the design is completed in the first area, repeat the same design in
the other three areas of the circle.

5. Color the design using four or fewer colors.
