DETAILS OF PROJECT
Project title
Ethno economics: Culture and Gender Role of Men and Women
in Sustainable Fishing Livelihoods at Gigantes Island

Duration of research March 2021- November 2021

Project description Economics has traditionally been perceived as a discipline that studies
the optimal choice of an individual under constraints, generally avoiding
the social context. However, economics today has become a much
broader field, incorporating social and cultural factors in the analysis of
decision-making and the direction of economic development. This
research is also concerned about the daily economic life of men and
women and their role in sustainable fishing on Gigantes Island, rooted in
their social, political and cultural life. To be more precise about the main
analytical threads, first, fishing is not only a livelihood on the island; it is
a way of living integrated into the social and political worlds of
fishermen, defining who are men and women are and, in a sense, who
they are not. Further, while cultural identity seemed to be an identity
marker that was often used, in everyday life, there was great
importance in other identity categories, such as whether one is a man or
a woman, the fishing method used or place of origin. Finally,
perceptions of how people were treated by the state fisheries actors
shaped how men and women engaged in their fishing livelihoods and
shaped the everyday politics of fishing in Gigantes Island. This research
documents the journey towards arriving at an understanding of these
dynamics.

Research Questions The main purpose of this study is to explore ethnoeconomics including
the culture and gender role of men and women in the sustainable
fishing livelihood in Gigantes Islands, Carles, Iloilo.
Specifically, this research proposal seeks to answer the following
objectives:

1. How culture affects the livelihoods of men and women in

sustainable fishing?
2. How do the differentiated role of men and women affect their
livelihoods, and how do these livelihoods shape role-related
dynamics in sustainable fishing communities?

Expected outputs Results of the study could be the basis of the formulation of policy in
sustainable fishing livelihood in the community and beyond gender
mainstreaming.

Methods The methodology of the study is based on the principles of the
economic-cultural approach and objectivity by revealing the role of men
and women in sustainable fishing livelihood. An integrated approach,
based on economic, ethnographic, geographical, cultural and other data,
is proposed to study the economic and ethno-social consequences
specifically in the gender role of men and women in ethno-economic
relations within the Gigantes Islands. The methods of ethnographic
research and observation of participants as a method of data collection
will be used to understand economic activity, cultural view and gender
role of men and women contributing to the sustainability of fishing
livelihoods. Ethnography on the other hand is a qualitative research
method in which a researcher—an ethnographer—studies a particular
social/cultural group with the aim to better understand it. Ethnography
is both a process. In doing ethnography, an ethnographer actively
participates in the group in order to gain an insider’s perspective of the
group and to have experiences similar to the group members. In writing
ethnography, an ethnographer creates an account of the group based
on this participation, interviews with group members, and an analysis of
group documents and artifacts. This entry offers an overview of
ethnography and the ethnographic research process, including
negotiating access, data collection, analysis, and writing
