Fractions and decimal fractions.

Remember it is easy to change fractions into decimal fractions using a

calculator.

This can also be done with fractions with thousandths.

1
means 1 divided by 1000 or 1 ÷ 1000
1000

Do this on a calculator: enter 1 ÷ 1 000 =

The answer 0.001 will come up.

1
This means that is the same as 0.001 (one thousandth)
1000

In the same way, using a calculator, find the decimal fraction for these
fractions. Complete all parts of the table below.

Using a calculator to decide size of fractions

When faced with fractions with different denominators ( bottom

numbers) it is often difficult to tell which is the larger fraction.

If the fractions are treated as division sums, then it is easy to use a

calculator to work out which is the larger.

3 18
For example: which is larger; or
4 25

3 18 3 18
is 0.75 whilst is 0.72 so is larger than
4 25 4 25

Work out which is the larger fraction in each of these pairs of fractions:

5 67 13 383
1. or 2. or
9 100 45 999

56 8 12 7
3. or 4. or
60 9 1000 500

17 14 7 56
5. or 6. or
120 101 60 200

Use your calculator to place these fractions in order of size (smallest

first) :

3 4 43 21 467
7.
8 9 90 50 900

9 3 28 179 143
