Artificial Intelligence in National Security (Military)

“We may hope that machines will eventually compete with men in all purely intellectual
fields” – Alan Turing

Artificial intelligence can be defined as having machines do “smart” or “intelligent” things on

their own without any guidance or interference by human. Artificial Intelligence initially
began as a philosophical quandary in past times, which later developed into a science fiction
forecast in the Modern Era and is a practical reality today.

AI security involves using and controlling AI to identify and stop the potential cyber threats
(of national or personal security) with less human intervention than what typically expected
or needed with traditional security methods.

AI in today’s world is an utmost priority for the government in defense worldwide specially

for superpowers like China, US, Israel and Russia, which consider the new global arms race.
AI has the potential to support a number of national and international security initiatives,
from cybersecurity to logistics and counter-terrorism. Like in other countries AI can be
deployed in almost every military application, and increased research and development
funding from military research agencies to develop new and advanced applications of AI is
projected to drive the increased adoption of AI-driven systems in the military sector. Some
military application of AI which can be beneficial for National security-

1. Warfare Platforms- embedding AI into weapons and other systems used on land, naval,
airborne, and space platforms. It will enable the development of efficient warfare systems
with less maintenance, which are less reliant on human input.

2. Logistics - Integrating AI with military transportation can lower transportation costs,

reduce human operational efforts, can easily detect anomalies and quickly predict
component failures.

3. Target Recognition- AI techniques are being developed to enhance the accuracy of target
recognition in complex combat environments.

4. Combat Simulation & Training- Simulation & training is a multidisciplinary mock field that
pairs system engineering, software engineering, and computer science to construct
computerized models that acquaint soldiers with the various combat systems deployed
during military operations.

5. AI in Data Processing- AI is very useful for quickly and efficiently processing large
volumes of data in order to obtain valuable information. AI can assist in aggregating
information from different datasets. This analysis then enables military personnel to
recognize patterns and derive correlations.
