1. Executive Summary
The external visual inspection and ultrasonic thickness gauging of Well
Shahdad X-1 Raw Gas Pipeline was carried out between July 01-05, 2021
at Pakistan Petroleum Limited Gambat South Field. Subjected pipeline was
buried and excavation was done to perform the direct examination on
locations where some indications were identified during DCVG survey. The
purpose of this direct examination is to determine which indications from
the indirect inspections are most severe and to assess the visual condition
of pipeline. After excavation and proper surface cleaning visual inspection
was performed to check the outside condition of pipeline as per guidelines
of API 570 and 574. Ultrasonic thickness gauging was performed to
measure the actual thickness and Ultrasonic A-scanning was also
performed at selected areas to locate metal loss (localized or uniform) due to
continuous service.
On the work order issued by M/S Pakistan Petroleum Limited, Inspectest
(Private) Limited mobilized its team for subjected work completion and
complete integrity assessment as per API 570 on the basis of visual
inspection and ultrasonic thickness gauging. Inspectest team consisted of
following personnel.

 01 API 570 Authorized Piping Inspector

 01 NDT Examiner

During visual inspection coating defects were noted at some points and
these coating defects were repaired by patch and sleeve applications.
Disbanded and damaged coating was removed up to the maximum
damaged extent and visual inspection of bare pipeline was performed.
Overall condition of pipeline under coating was found satisfactory and none
of the major findings which could lead any catastrophic or abrupt failure of
pipeline were found during the thorough course of inspection. UTG and A-
scanning was performed at excavated locations (08 Nos.) and overall
results of thickness was found satisfactory. The collected UTG inspection
data would be used as a reference for next inspection at due date.

3. Scope of Work
Subjected Pipeline was buried and client decided to perform the direct
examination on points where some indications were identified during DCVG
survey. Direct examination of total 08 points out of 10 was performed by
API 570 inspector after excavation and proper surface preparation.
Following Inspections and NDT techniques were used for assessment and
evaluation of Well Shahdad X-1 Raw Gas Pipeline.
 External visual inspection by API 570 inspector to determine the condition
of the outside of piping, coating systems and to check for signs of
misalignment and leakage.
 After removal of disbanded and damaged coating external visual inspection
was performed to locate and estimate any damage (corrosion, erosion,
through holes, cracks, cuts, gouges and pitting (scattered, isolated,
clustered all types).

9. Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement

Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement and A-scanning was performed on pipe
for assessment of any general and localized wall loss due to erosion and
corrosion. Uniform thickness readings were observed during UTG.
Following are the details of minimum measured thickness at different
points of pipeline.

Minimum measured thickness at point no. 1 : 11.68 mm

Minimum measured thickness at point no. 2 : 11.88 mm
Minimum measured thickness at point no. 3 : 12.15 mm
Minimum measured thickness at point no. 4 : 12.23 mm
Minimum measured thickness at point no. 5 : 11.48 mm
Minimum measured thickness at point no. 8 : 11.56 mm
Minimum measured thickness at point no. 9 : 11.88 mm
Minimum measured thickness at point no. 10 : 11.84 mm

Detailed UTG report can be found in Appendix-A.

9.1 Required Thickness Calculation for Straight Pipe
API 570 permits the use of simple Barlow formula to determine the
required wall thickness for in-service piping. The Barlow formula is as
follows;

In our case
t = Required Thickness
D = 219.1 mm (API 574 Table 1 against pipe size NPS 8)
P = 2200 PSI as provided by client
S = Allowable Stress 27300 PSI as per ASME B31.3 Table A-1 for
API 5L Gr. X70 material
E = Joint efficiency 1 as per ASME B31.3 Table A-1B
Pressure design thickness for internal pressure of 2200 PSI is 8.83 mm.
As per API 574 table 7 minimum structural thickness shall be 2.8 mm
and as per API 574 section 12.1.4 The minimum required thickness is

FIELD

the greater value of the pressure design thickness or the structural

minimum thickness. So, minimum required thickness for internal
pressure is 8.83 mm.

10. MAWP Calculation at Minimum Measured Thickness

MAWP at minimum measured thickness can be calculated by using the
following formula;

Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP) at minimum measured

thickness of 11.48 mm is 2861 PSI. Please note MAWP is calculated only
for integrity calculations and it is recommended that process conditions
should not exceed from design conditions. It is calculated on current
thickness and value may change with respect to corrosion rate.

11. Corrosion Rate and Remaining Life Calculations

Corrosion rate and Remaining Life of pipeline can be calculated from API
510 7.1.1.1 and 7.2.1.

Long Term Corrosion Rate

Short Term Corrosion Rate

Tprevious - Tactual
Corrosion Rate = Time between Tprevious & Tactual
(Years)

As this was the 1st inspection and previous UTG data is not available for
comparison so corrosion rate and remaining life can’t be calculated.
These values shall be calculated in next inspection interval.

The item/s described above was/were examined in prescribed manner. The information contains hereon reflects the company’s finding

12. Conclusion
 No critical observation that can hinder safe future operation was
observed during visual and UTG survey. Overall condition of the Pipeline
was found satisfactory.
 Uniform thickness readings were observed on pipe and no major
deviation was observed in thickness values.
 Integrity calculations were carried out as it was found that minimum
required thickness as per API 570 is surpassed by measured thickness
in current inspection. Also calculated MAWP by date of next inspection
is greater than the specified MAWP for the subjected piping.
 Hence it is concluded that Well Shahdad X-1 Raw Gas Pipeline is found
fit to operate at design pressure and temperature. As per API 570 section
6.3.4.2 subjected pipeline falls in class 1 piping and as per API 570
Table 1 recommended maximum inspection interval for visual and
thickness measurement is 05 years. So, the next inspection of Well
Shahdad X-1 Raw Gas Pipeline shall be conducted after 05 year of
service so due date for next inspection is July 2026 or the next
inspection can be planned as per frequency defined for next ECDA
study.
