00”N - 29o 35’ 00” N.
Upper Mugu Karnali Hydroelectric Project (315 MW) is a Peaking Run of River (PROR)
type of hydropower project with an installed capacity of 315,000 kW. The purposed weir
covers 4313 km2 of catchment area with design flow Q45% of time is 58.95m3/sec and
project gross head is 426.6 m. Mugu Karnali is major tributary of Karnali River. The
headworks site lies 2267msl and the underground powerhouse is proposed on left bank of
the river in Mugu Karmarong Rural Municipality of Mugu District at 1853msl.
The headwork consists of side intake with concrete dam of 14m height with 2 under
sluice. Surface settling basins are purposed to handle the sediment of size greater than
0.2mm are purposed on Right Side River. The design discharge passes through 12.0 km
long tunnel with diameter 8.0m x 8.0m with follow through 2 penstocks of 3.0 m
diameter and 1.0 km in length. The purposed powerhouse consists of 5 generating units
with Pelton turbines with the vertical axis.
The purpose powerhouse site is 15 km from district headquarter Gamgadhi bazar. The
national highway is upto the district headquarters. There is road an existing road up to
Lumsha which is near to powerhouse area. The power generated from the project
synchronizes to 400 kV substation of purposed substation of Mugu Karnali being
developed by Rastriya Parshan Grid company Ltd.(RPGCL). The energy generation is
568 GWh dry of total 1759 GWh annually.
