Practical No. 02

Aim: To compare the stresses, displacements and reaction forces obtained by hand-calculation
and ANSYS in a 2Dtrusses.

Objectives:

1. To learn how to solve truss problems using ANSYS 16.0

2. To understand steps followed by software during solution
3. To learn how to apply boundary conditions and loads
4. To understand how to analyze output results
5. To explore the different facilities available in the software
6. Comparison of results for accuracy

Finite Element Package Used:-ANSYS14.0

Problem Definition:-A Two member truss is as shown in Fig.No.1 the cross-sectional area of each
member is 200 mm2 and the modulus of elasticity is 200Gpa. Determine the defelction, reactions
and stresses in each of the member.

1. Preprocessing: - In this step the Modeling and Meshing of physical system is carried out,
which is required for the solving the FEA Model.

1. Modeling:-
a. Generation of Key points:-
Preprocessor –Modeling – Create – key points – In active Co-ordinate system
Sr.No. Key point No. Co-ordinates (x,y)
1 1 0,0
2 2 4000,0
3 3 0,3000

b. Create the Line:-
Preprocessor –Modeling – Create –Lines –Line –In active Co-ord

The Key points 1, 2 are connected to create line 1 and KP 2, 3 are

connected to each other to create line 2.

c.Assign the Element

Preprocessor – Element type – Add /Edit /Delete -- Beam 2D Elastic 3

Next step is to assign the appropriate element to the model

Element assigned: - Beam 2D Elastic 3

d.Apply the real Constants

Preprocessor – Real Constants -- Add /Edit /Delete

Cross Sectional Area = 200 mm2

Area Moment of Inertia = 3184.7 mm4

e. Apply Material Properties

Preprocessor – Material Properties – material models – structural – Linear –
Isotropic

Young’s Modulus = 200 GPA

Poisson’s Ratio = 0.3

f. Meshing:-
Preprocessor – Meshing – Mesh – Line – Select the Lines

Solution – Analysis type – New Analysis – Static

b. Define Loads (Boundary Conditions)

1. Apply displacement
Solution – Define Loads – Apply – structural – Displacement –DOF= 0 on
Node No.1 &5 (because they are fixed)
2. Apply force
Solution – Define Loads – Apply – structural – force –
Force = -10000 N on Node NO.2

3. Post processing:-In the post processing step the Deflection and stress plot are taken and also
the reaction values are taken.

a. Plotting the Deformed and unreformed shape of truss after solving the Model.
