O ptimas Solutions, a global industrial manufactur-

er/distributor and service provider, announced it
received the PACCAR Silver Award for Excellence in
Engineering. Optimas was awarded recognition for
a common plating project it undertook on PACCAR’s
behalf. This is the first time Optimas has been rec-
ognized by PACCAR for the award given to suppliers
who exemplify excellence in engineering support and
capabilities.
“We are extremely pleased with receiving this
award,” said Cliff Harris, Optimas general manager
& vice president of sales. “We work hard to help our
customers achieve their business goals and PACCAR
is no exception. We are honored that they have rec-
ognized our engineering capabilities in support of the
PACCAR brand.”
According to Harris, working on the common plat-
ing design project with PACCAR cross divisional en-
gineers, Optimas was able to reduce the amount of
part numbers by 200, added lower torque fasteners
to achieve higher clamp loads and proper material
handling techniques for added worker safety and ef-
ficiency. Overall, Optimas was able to reduce frame
specific fasteners by 65 per cent, replacing them with
a group of fasteners common to all applications and
truck frames, driving efficiencies in supply continuity,
part consolidation, assembly ergonomics, and appli-
cation costs. Additionally, the 65 per cent part consol-
idation effort improved environmental sustainability
objectives with environmentally sound materials.
“We value our nearly 15-year relationship with PAC-
CAR and this award solidifies our partnership and
level of engagement even more,” said Steve Adkins,
director of engineering at Optimas. “We look forward
to building on this collaboration with PACCAR.”

NORMA Group Annual

General Meeting approves
dividend of 70 cents per
share
W ith a wide majority, NORMA Group’s Annual General
Meeting approved the proposal of the Supervisory
Board and Management Board to distribute a dividend of
70 cents per share, corresponding to a distribution volume
of about EUR 22.3 million. This partially compensates for
the low prior-year dividend, which was held to a statutory
minimum of 4 cents per share.
Dr. Michael Schneider, CEO of NORMA Group:
“Considering the challenges that we faced, we developed
well in 2020. We want our shareholders to participate fairly
in the tangible business recovery. I am grateful that they
have stood by us in 2020 through the uncertain situation
and helped ensure that we have weathered the pandemic
as well as can be expected so far. This dividend is also an
expression of our confidence in NORMA Group’s continued
positive development. In the future, we want to again
distribute 30 to 35 percent of adjusted net profit as part
of our sustainable dividend policy.”

Resilient business in 2020

The Corona pandemic had a significant impact on
NORMA Group’s business activities in fiscal year 2020.
The company generated Group sales of EUR 952.2 million
(2019: EUR 1,100.1 million). This represents a 12.1 percent
organic decrease in revenue. Adjusted earnings before Dr. Michael Schneider at the NORMA Group Annual General Meeting
interest and taxes was EUR 45.3 million, corresponding
to an EBIT margin of 4.8 percent. Customer demand
gradually picked up in the second half, culminating in a significant business recovery at the end of the year. Strict
cost discipline and more modest capital expenditures than
in the previous year partially offset the negative impact
of the Corona pandemic. The acceleration of the “Get on
track” change program resulted in expenses of around EUR
29 million. These were not adjusted.

Miguel Ángel López Borrego elected

member of the Supervisory Board
The Annual General Meeting elected Miguel Ángel López
Borrego as a member of the Supervisory Board by a large
majority. As CEO of Siemens S.A. in Madrid, Miguel Ángel
López Borrego heads Siemens’ Spanish business and since
2018 has been chairing the Board of Directors of Siemens
Gamesa Renewable Energy S.A., a listed manufacturer of
wind turbines in Spain. He was appointed as a new member
of NORMA Group’s Supervisory Board on March 16, 2021.

Fumalock® – Leaving a legacy

for future generations
Atotech’s revolutionary next generation of fume suppressants
for hexavalent hard chrome plating processes - non-PFAS and
fluorine-free

A totech, a leading global supplier of specialty

surface-finishing solutions, announced the
global launch of Fumalock®, the first non-PFAS,
fluorine-free fume suppressant for hexavalent hard
chrome processes on the global market.
“We are pleased to offer the first fluorine-free,
non-PFOS, non-PFAS fume suppressant for the
global market. Thanks to Fumalock®, our customers
will no longer need to utilize PFAS substances in
their hard chrome plating operations”, said Josep
Sans, Global Product Director of Wear Resistant
Coatings at Atotech.
Fumalock® is a highly effective fume suppressing
process that is designed to form a dense foam
barrier layer, which helps to prevent the exhaust
of hazardous aerosols. The new fume suppressant
achieves two to four times lower values of
emissions compared to existing processes.
Fumalock ® provides an excellent balance
between a controlled foam blanket and the
reduction of surface tension to values below
40 (30-37) mN/m. It exhibits a wide operating
window and an adjustable foam blanket thickness.
Additionally, the fume suppressant possesses
strong resistance to hard water and excellent
tolerance to metal impurities.
Fumalock®’s effective reduction of chromic
acid mist during the plating operation facilitates a
safer working environment, and also reduces the
possibility of contaminating peripherals around the
plating tank by chromic acid fumes. As a result, it
helps to increase the longevity of plating equipment
and related ventilation systems.
With Fumalock ® Atotech has developed an
environmentally friendly fume suppressing
process, which is easy to control and operate, and
demonstrates improved performance over existing
fume suppressants available today.
Fumalock ® is one of Atotech’s innovative
contributions to a sustainable future for the hard
chrome plating industry.

Kistler expands portfolio with low outgassing cables for space testing

take place under a vacuum and

mission. On-ground environmental space tests demand
equipment to withstand artificial vacuums without
emitting potentially problematic gasses.

The extreme conditions of outer space pose different challenges to

equipment. Standard components can become a problem when used
in space crafts and satellites. For example, standard cable materials
may emit gases. The amount of freed gas increases in the artificial
vacuum of environmental space tests on ground or in space itself.
These gasses can potentially condensate on sensitive equipment such
as camera lenses and might corrupt test results or even endanger
the entire mission.
To meet space test demands, Kistler has now expanded its portfolio
to incorporate a cable series with fluoropolymer jackets which meet
low outgassing requirements. Additionally, a second cable series with Low outgassing cables for triaxial accelerometers from

Triaxial accelerometers from Kistler are used to measure forces
in different test scenarios on space crafts and satellites. The heart
of the sensor is an element that omits an electric impulse when

piezoelectric sensors prove to be ideal for demanding measurements

Statistical Process Control:

More data collected, less time
to control with Dimac’ SPC
family

S tatistical Process Control (SPC) is a methodology

that allows companies to monitor production
processes in real time with the aim of guaranteeing
the quality of their parts, forecasting the progress
of production and intervening with the logic of
continuous improvement.
As recommended by the IATF 16949:2016
standard - the revised quality management
system in the automotive sector developed by
the International Automotive Task Force - the
effectiveness of the SPC methodology depends on
the use of statistically significant and reliable data.
To meet this goal Dimac developed its SPC-LAB
family with the aim of performing human error-free
SPC controls, while objectifying and integrating the
data collected into the company ERP system.
SPC-LAB is a mobile unit for SPC controls,
suitable for parts with cylindrical geometry made
by cold forging or turning. Rapid and accurate,
SPC-LAB allows to measure simple and complex
geometries in the shopfloor. No metrology room
and no operator skills are required: one click and
all the measures are immediately available for
the company ERP system, with a time saving of
approximately 90%.
SPC-EVO is the automatic mobile unit
designed for SPC control of flat parts like washers
and elastic rings produced in multiple figures by fine
blanking. The automatic measurement of multiple
parts leads to an incredible time saving.
Interchangeable blisters are filled off
line with the parts to be controlled, the blister
feeds the part into a glass rotary table device. SPC
dimensional and surface inspection is performed
on both faces of each part by two high-resolution
digital cameras with bi-telecentric optics and
dedicated illuminators.
Last but not least, SPC-ROBOT is the innovative
mobile and robotized unit conceived for Industry
4.0, perfect for the automation of statistical
reports, PPAP (Production Part Approval Process)
and centralized data collection through non-
contact automatic measurements without human
intervention. As option on demand, this mobile unit
can house an NDT Eddy current station for Heat

The Lada Brand
The national manufacturer Lada, the central player of
the Russian automotive industry, retained over 20 percent
of the market share in 2019. The brand was leading in
both primary and secondary markets as of May 2020. Two
of its models made it in the top three of the most sold
passenger car ranking, with Granta leading the list at over
84 thousand units in sales as of the first half of 2020.

Car Sales and Trade

After a gradual decline in sales of passenger cars and
light commercial vehicles (LCVs), the trend turned positive
in 2017. Sales volume climbed up to 1.7 million units in
2019. A sport utility vehicle (SUV), the most desired type
of car by the Russian customer, generated the largest
market sales turnover by the first half of 2020, with the
Korean Hyundai as the most sold brand in this category.

Patented and certified Bolt-Check

system developed by R&D A/S offers
accurate bolt tension measurements and

• Reduced repairs costs, increased reliability and support

for long-term monitoring among key benefits of accurate
tensioning.
• Correct bolt tension is hard to achieve but essential to safety

bolt can trigger a domino effect that, at worst, could result

in the failure of the entire turbine.
The Bolt-Check system measures the length of the bolt
as it lengthens in response to the application of load -
torque or tension. These values are converted into accurate
clamping force. During the bolt tensioning process at the
assembly level, the operator observes the data live on the
screen, and stops applying load once the desired tension
has been achieved. Once in service, measurement of the
bolt tension is possible without the need to loosen the
bolts. This is because the system uses ultrasonic and
mechanical length measurements as well as information
about the material properties of the bolt batch. Combining
these three values, makes it possible to measure and
calculate the actual clamping force.
Accurate to within five percent, the Bolt-Check systems

Each bolt uniquely tagged

The Bolt-Check system can be used when installing
new bolts and when evaluating existing bolts as part
of determining the lifespan of wind turbines. As part
of the full Bolt-Check system, a unique traceability-tag
is added to each bolt, supporting pre-failure diagnosis
and traceability, including the location of each bolt
as well as its schedule of service and maintenance.
No pre-treatment of the bolts is required.

In September 2020, R&D A/S was granted a

Method innovation. Although the use of ultrasound
for measuring distance is not new, Bolt-Check can
be used to determine the actual clamping force in
existing bolted joints, without loosening the bolts,

At the end of last year, the Bolt-Check system
obtained DNV-GL product certificate allowing the
Bolt-Check solution to be used for service and
maintenance inspections as an alternative to torque
or tension tools. The certificate provides independent
verification that Bolt-Check fulfils the stringent
standards of wind turbine tools and services. All DNV-
GL type certification services are accredited by the
German accreditation body DAkkS.
Bolt-Check, which is produced in Denmark and
is supplied to wind turbine customers in several
continents, is scheduled to be presented at the
Husum Wind exhibition 14th-17th September 2021.

Non-linear spring model for

realistic anchor designs in
concrete
Innovative design method optimises group fastening planning
processes

T he fixings specialist fischer presents an innovative

design method in a new white paper: The non-linear
spring model allows the resistance of anchor groups to be
calculated realistically taking into account the base plate
geometry and anchor layout as well as the existing stiffness
of base plates and individual anchors.
The non-linear spring model picks up where current
standards and guidelines on designing fastenings under
tension loading in concrete based on the Concrete Capacity
method (CC method) reach their limits. The limitations of
applying these concepts become apparent when it comes
to the base plate geometry, for instance. The European

Be it bridge constructions, enormous plant or office structures or in
football stadiums – anchorings in concrete provide safety and stability to
all types of supporting structures around the globe. This is why practical
methods such as the non-linear spring model to realistically verify
sufficiently stiff base plates are all the more important.

with a maximum 3x3 configuration, for example. These
regulations also require a sufficiently stiff base plate.
This is a prerequisite in order to determine the internal
force distribution of an anchor group with a linear strain
distribution approach, which additionally takes leverage
forces into account. Definitions and regulations to
determine sufficiently stiff base plates are not covered by
current regulations and guidelines, however.
In practical construction, the requirements and suitable
fixings solutions often deviate from designs covered by
current guidelines. The non-linear spring model is a
potential solution that allows the overall non-linear
behaviour of fastenings to be taken into account. The
new calculation method allows deformations and stresses
within the base plate to be calculated under the influence
of force. It also allows the load distribution or load transfer
between individual fastenings of a group to be determined.
Examining sufficient base plate stiffness is therefore no
longer required, as the model automatically determines

The non-linear spring model presented by fischer in the latest white

paper provides added precision, safety, flexibility and efficiency while
considerably eliminating the limitations of current standards for the
design of fastenings in concrete.

In addition to the transferable forces, the performance-
based (displacement-based) concept thereby also includes
displacements and deformations of an anchorage under
the influence of force in the calculation. The method
realistically takes into account design rules in terms of
anchor configuration, base plate thickness as well as load.
As a result, the spring model enables a better assessment
of the overall system than calculations based solely on
load-bearing capacity.
The concept is based on the assumption that within an
anchor group, the anchors resist the tension forces, while
the compression forces are transferred directly into the

Optimising weight with direct screw fastenings into plastics

Innovative fasteners for

high-performance plastics
When it comes to fastening plastics there are many different
influencing factors at play. The challenge is to find a geometry
for the screw fastening that balances out any negative effects

the fastening solution is optimally adapted to the material's
properties and the type of load it will need to bear.

To completely automate the shot peening process, the
shot blast machine was equipped with a special work
piece loading system that includes a weighing cell and
the required software integration. This allows calculating
the optimum batch weight during the automatic work
piece load operation. The PLC adapts the shot peening
time to the actual weight of the respective work piece
batch. Throughout the peening operation the barrel is
completely sealed with a lid. The barrel and turbine RPM
are automatically adjusted with frequency inverters. All
these features, combined with the optimum mixing of
the work pieces in the barrel, make sure that absolutely
consistent, repeatable peening results are achieved in
surprisingly short cycle times. Of course, the continuous
monitoring of all critical process parameters also
contributes to the process safety and stability.
The blast media recycling and cleaning system is
adapted to the overall system and guarantees the
consistently high blast media quality required for the
shot peening process.

Nitto Seiko develops medical

magnesium for implant materials

N itto Seiko (Kyoto Prefecture) has

succeeded in developing "Medical
biosoluble high-purity magnesium" that has
been jointly researched and developed with
Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine and
University of Toyama with the support of Kyoto
Prefecture. They filed a patent application for
the world's first technology.
Magnesium, which has been attracting
attention as a medical implant, has a problem
that it dissolves in a living body for a very
short period of time and disappears before
the treatment of the affected area.
In the joint research, they developed a
pure magnesium material that can control
the period of dissolution and absorption in
the living body, and technically established
that it can be used for specific implant parts.
According to the company, it is the world's first
technology to control the dissolution period
using pure magnesium.
The pure magnesium produced in this
research succeeded in reducing the total
amount of impurity elements such as Al, Zn,
and Pb to 0.05% or less of the weight by using
their unique metal refining technology.
Unlike magnesium alloys, it is pure
magnesium with a purity of 99.95% or higher,
so it has extremely high affinity for living
organisms and can be expected to be applied
to implant products with excellent biosafety.
It is unlikely to affect imaging by X-ray
imaging in the medical field, and it is easy to
observe the imaging site because there is little
difference in X-ray transmittance from bone
and body fluid.
Due to the characteristics of magnesium
material, which is stronger than resin and
softer than titanium alloy and stainless alloy, it
has the advantage of being easy to process into
an implant shape that matches the patient's
treatment site.
I n the future, the company will proceed with
preparations such as approval of medical
devices in order to introduce medical implants
using the same material to the market.
Intramedullary nails, screws, bone plates, etc.
can be expected to be applied. It eliminates
the need for implant removal surgery after
osteosynthesis, which was previously required
for metal implant surgery, and can reduce the
burden on patients.

force, and it was shown that the frequency decreased as
the axial force decreased. In past experiments, they have
succeeded in associating the relationship between the
natural frequency and the axial force by hitting the head
side of the bolt.
Professor Hosoya of the research group majoring in
vibration and acoustics said, "Technically, it is possible to

but in terms of cost, this hammering inspection is a highly
practical method."

technology to detect looseness has not been completely
established. There is a human tapping sound test as a
conventional method, but it depends largely on the skill
level, and it can only be judged
by the level of sound that can
be heard by humans. There
is also a problem that such
skilled workers are lacking.
The developed method
measures and quantifies the

is hit with a hammer with an

If it can be put into practical

a general-purpose test

the proficiency level of the
inspector. Since there is no
new device to be added to the
bolted joint, it is also a great
feature that the existing joint
can be inspected.

New Passenger
Car Registrations
European Union
Passenger car registrations:
+24.4% four months into 2021;
+218.6% in April

B russels, 19 May 2021 – In April 2021, new car reg-

istrations surged by 218.6% in the European Union
because of last year’s low base of comparison. Despite
this big percentage increase, last month’s sales volume
was almost 300,000 units lower than that recorded in
April 2019.

New passenger car registrations in the EU

In April 2021, new car registrations surged by 218.6% in

the European Union because of last year’s low base of
comparison due to coronavirus restrictions. Indeed, de-
spite this big percentage increase, last month’s sales vol-
ume was almost 300,000 units lower than that recorded
in April 2019. Many markets across the EU region posted
double- or even triple-digit percentage gains in April. Italy
recorded the biggest uplift (+3,276.8%) of the major mar-
kets, followed by Spain (+1,787.9%). France (+568.8%)
and Germany (+90.0%) also showed strong gains com-
pared to last year.
From January to April 2021, EU demand for passen-
ger cars increased by 24.4% to reach 3.4 million units
registered in total, with the last two months providing a
substantial boost. Looking at the four largest markets,
Italy and France posted the biggest gains (up 68.4% and
51.0% respectively). At the same time, positive April results
brought the cumulative performances of Spain (+18.8%)
and Germany (+7.8%) into positive territory for the first
time this year.

World Steel in Figures

2021
The World Steel Association has published the 2021 edition of World Steel
in Figures. The publication provides a comprehensive overview of steel
industry activities, stretching from crude steel production to apparent steel
use, from indications of global steel trade flows to iron ore production and
trade.

E dwin Basson, Director General, worldsteel,

said, ‘We have said many times that the steel
industry is at the heart of the global economy
and equally so at the core of our sustainable
modern society. Despite the influence of the
pandemic, through its different regional impacts,
the global steel industry was fortunate to end
2020 with only a minor contraction in steel
demand. Steel use in China expanded while
it contracted in the rest of the world. We look
forward to normalisation in demand during
2021, owing to steady progress on vaccines and
changed behaviour in the global society.
We believe that the pandemic has accelerated
some key trends, which will bring about shifts in
steel demand. The steel industry will see exciting
opportunities from rapid developments through
digitisation and automation, infrastructure
initiatives, reorganisation of urban centres and
energy transformation.’
