So many that in order to keep track of all of them, scientists had to come up with a system of classification. Classification is when you sort things according to their likenesses. For example, if you had a pack of playing cards, you could sort the cards into four groups based on their suit. Or you could sort them differently and place cards into groups based on the value each card ; represents (all the 10s go together, all the Kings go together, all the Queens go together, etc...) Aristotle was the first person to study plants and animals. However, the scientist most famous for his work in classification was Carolus Linnaeus. He was born in Sweden in 1707 and died in 1778. He was the first scientist to come up with an orderly system for classifying plants and animals. Scientists still use this system today, however it has been improved and modified. sceg , Carolus Linnaeus As more and more plants and animals were discovered, scientists did their best to analyze the structures and external appearances of these living things. By determining which features were similar or the same, scientists placed plants and animals into groups. The system that scientists currently use is called taxonomy. Taxonomic names are written in Latin because it is a language recognized by all biologists all over the world - regardless of their culture. On the following page is the hierarchical system used by modern biologists to classify living things: As organisms are classified through each rank they become more specific until their exact species is i > determined. hitps://wway teacherspayteachers con Store/Teacher-owy Lelrer lt Met tlt] Numbers increase as you travel up the pyramid and similarities between animals decrease. What is the name given to the current system of classifying living things? 4, What are the seven levels of the hierarchical system used to classify living things? 5. Go online and research a common animal of your choice. Organization - Student has used proper sorting and organization techniques to demonstrate his/her information in a logical manner. Accuracy - Student classifies animals appropriately and under the correct categories. Student Name: $a Overall Level: The Five Kingdoms | All of the living things on earth are classified into five kingdoms. The two largest kingdoms are the animal and plant kingdoms, The other three kingdoms are the fungi kingdom, protista kingdom, and monera kingdom. Scientists use differences in cell structure, appearance, reproductive ability, mobility, functionality and many other characteristics to help | determine which kingdom each living thing belongs to. Animal Kingdom: The animal kingdom can be further divided into animals with backbones (vertebrates) and animals without backbones (invertebrates). Some examples of vertebrates are: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, marsupials, primates, rodents, and cetaceans (such as whales and dolphins). Some examples of invertebrates are: insects, arachnids, crustaceans (such as crabs), mollusks (such as octopus), annelids (such as earthworms), echinoderms (such as starfish), and protozoa. Vertebrates Invertebrates Plants are very important to all living things on earth. Without plants animals would not be able to sustain life. Plants are able to create their own food through photosynthesis, while animals rely on plants and other animals as sources of nutrition. Plants are also responsible for releasing oxygen into the air and soaking up carbon dioxide as part of the Photosynthesis process. Plants are further divided based on the following criteria: ~ if they can circulate fluids (water) through their bodies or need to absorb them from the moisture that surrounds them. * how they reproduce (i.e. by spores or by seeds) - their size or stature Photosynthesis Light energy is provided by the sun Oxygen is released into the air as a by- product Carbon dioxide is soaked in to the plant | [[swser is created as an energy i ‘| _ molecule for the plant Ty es Water and minerals in the soil are used by the plant Be Fungi Kingdom: Some of the most commonly known fungi are mushrooms, yeasts, toadstools, and moulds. Fungi are mostly responsible for decomposition. They return nutrients back to the earth and in decomposing plants and animals they grow themselves. They feed off of the dead (and sometimes living) carcasses of plants and animals. Some fungi are also used to make drugs such as penicillin and other antibiotics. Fungi range in size from single celled and microscopic to the size of a football field. Protista Kingdom: Protists are usually single celled organisms that live in water or other moist places such as the bodies of animals or deep in soil, Scientists classify protists based on how they obtain nutrition, and how they move. Protists are interesting in that they can be similar to plants, animals or fungi; they have many different forms, Most of them however have animal-like characteristics. Protists are usually parasites and can cause disease and death, Monera Kingdom: Monerans are single celled organisms. The most G popular monerans are bacteria. Bacteria can be found almost anywhere on earth. It can grow in _ very hot or very cold places. Moneran cells have no /-.\” . . nucleus and therefore are the simplest life forms. \& They are the oldest life forms on Earth and thus are the ancestors of all the other types of life. The Five Kingdoms Worksheet 1, How many kingdoms are there to classify living things? 2. What do scientists use to help them determine which kingdom each living thing belongs to? 3.
