Scan the following essay, written by Sulaiman Al-Mazeedi, a student of the Health
Sciences Centre at Kuwait University, dealing with a neurological sleep disorder.
As you scan, find the followinginformation:
1. What is hypocretin?Hypocretin is a chemical in the brain that helps control sleep time.
The cause of low hypocretin is thought to be due to the immune system attacking healthy
cells (autoimmune). Conditions that can trigger the autoimmune process, leading to
narcolepsy, for example stress.
6. What is anMSLT?
The multiple sleep latency test (MSLT) tests for excessive daytime sleepiness by
measuring how quickly you fall asleep in a quiet environment during the day.
7. What type of drug isRitalin? Ritilin / Methylphenidate is used to treat attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder - ADHD. It works by changing the amount of certain
natural substances in the brain. ritilin / Methylphenidate belongs to a class of drugs
known as stimulants.
8. What type of drugisProzac? prozac is a brand of oral medicine in the form of a
capsule with the main active ingredient fluoxetine. This drug belongs to the class of
selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRls), which are drugs that work by
increasing serotonin production

11 ofhypocretin,achemicalinthebrainthataidsinnormalizingsleep.Thisdisorder
12 attacks men and women equally, affecting one in every two thousandpeople
13 globally. Narcolepsy, also known as daytime sleep disorder, can be definedin terms
14 of its symptoms, diagnosis, andtreatment.
