Summary of Edible Oil Industry in Sri Lanka
Extracted from plants by placing the relevant part of the plant under pressure, to squeeze the oil out
Oils may also be extracted from plants by dissolving parts of plants in water or another solvent,
and distilling the oil (known as essential oils).

Edible oils exports in September 2016 based on the latest available international trade data. The
analysis identified the products and markets key to Sri Lanka’s edible oils sector and compared with
competitor countries. Although edible oils are non-complex products that make up a small share of the
country’s total exports (0.5% in 2014), they help to diversify Sri Lankan exports and may serve as
stepping stones toward further diversification into other more complex exports in the future. Coconut
oil, which made up 86% of Sri Lanka’s edible oils exports in 2014, is particularly promising, with
exports growing by more than a factor of 10 in just five years and much room to grow based on global
demand.

In 2015, Sri Lanka’s annual edible oil requirement was around 160,000 Metric Tonnes (MT). However,
Sri Lanka only produces a total of 53,000 MT of coconut oil and 18,000 MT of palm oil. The balance
89,000 MT in the island’s edible oil requirement is sourced from the global palm oil giants Indonesia
and Malaysia who produce 80% of the global palm oil demand.

In 2015, Sri Lanka spent Rs. 20.8 billion on oil and fats imports with a significant majority of those
imports being for palm oil. Collectively, palm kernel, palm olein, palm stearin and crude palm oil
accounted for 164,835 MT or nearly 30% of all edible oil and fats imported into Sri Lanka.
