INST RUCT IONS T O CANDIDAT ES :

1. Attempt any FIVE question(s), ea ch que stion c arrie s 12 marks.

1. The irrigated area of a water course is 800 hectares. The intensity of rice in this area is
65%. The duration for transplantation of rice crop is 15 days and the total depth of water
required by the crop is 60 cm during transplantation period. The useful rainfall during
transplantation period is 15 cm. Find the duty of the irrigation water for the crop on field
during transplantation at the head of the field channel and at the head of distributary, if the
loss of water in the water course is 25%. Also find the discharge in the water course.

2. A watershed of 80 km2 produces a runoff of 2.2M m3 from the rainfall pattern of the storm
given below. Calculate phi-index.

Time (h) 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14

Rainfall (cm) 0 1.8 2.5 5.9 5.1 3.05 0.9 0

3. Discuss the evolution of the final profile of a gravity dam from its elementary profile and
explain the main principles of its design.

4. A watershed has 5 non- recording rain gauges, installed in its area. The amount of rainfall
recorded for one of the years is given below:

Rain gauge station P Q R S T

Annual rainfall in cm 105 120 200 90 120

Find the required optimum number of rain gauges for this watershed. Assume an error of
10% in the estimation of mean rainfall.

5. How is the water lost while flowing through irrigation canals? What are the factors
affecting these losses and how will you estimate these losses? What precautions should be
undertaken to minimise them?

6. Following observations were made for conducting a water budget of a reservoir over a
period of one month :

Average surface area= 15 sqkm, Mean surface inflow rate = 12 cumec, Mean surface
outflow rate = 13 cumec, Rainfall = 12.5 cm, fall in reservoir level = 1.5m, Pan
evaporation = 210 mm. Assuming the pan-factor as 0.75, estimate the average seepage
discharge from the reservoir during the month.

7. Design a regime channel for a discharge of 35 cumec with silt factor of 0.9 by Lacey's
theory, taking side slopes as 1H:2V.

8. “Dams are the source of sorrow and grief.” Justify your views either for or against this
statement with appropriate points.
